justsomeguy123··on RootMyTV is a user-friendly exploit for rooting/jailbreaking LG webOS smart TVs
Do you... change your tires? Or just get a brand new car every year to avoid the hassle of dealing with car shops?

Problem with Smart TVs is they become obsolete super fast software wise. And basically, unsafe to connect to the internet in a few years.

Most TVs have CI+ ports. I can easily imagine an upgradable "smart module". Just buy a new compatible one (which, effectively could just connect for power and HDMI) and get the brand new stuff.

There is no bubble, smart TVs are a consumerist trap and it will require government intervention to fix because nobody has any incentives otherwise.

justsomeguy123··on Why adults still dream about school
Like, apart from the whole Europe.
justsomeguy123··on 2022 Amish Population Profile
> Note: Population estimates for 2022 were calculated using a variety of sources including Raber’s New American Almanac, reports by correspondents in Die Botschaft, The Budget, and The Diary, settlement directories, regional newsletters, and settlement informants. The data includes all Amish groups that use horse-and-buggy transportation, but excludes car-driving groups such as the Beachy Amish and Amish Mennonites. > > To cite this page: “Amish Population Profile, 2022.” Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies, Elizabethtown College. http://groups.etown.edu/amishstudies/statistics/amish-popula....

Well, it's hard to cite a page where somebody manually estimated some numbers from various sources without at least providing a table to see what the individual estimates were so at least some errors can be corrected.

But, interesting factoids.

justsomeguy123··on He dropped out to become a poet – now he’s won a Fields Medal
But you don't "own" that. You get a temporary rent. The problem is society (and tech) moves so fast it feels like the rent is too long.

The idea to incentivize public sharing of knowledge for a short term rent is not so stupid.

justsomeguy123··on Microsoft clarifies that game activity is shared with third parties in new ToS
> You know, because Minecraft is a game targeted at kids.

A survival game where you are utterly alone fighting zombies and all kinds of monsters that come at night while you have no weapons or shelter.

Yeap... kids stuff.

justsomeguy123··on There are no open issues or pull requests on Flask
> What did Python have relative to other languages that inspired these developers to devote so much energy into their projects?

Not a popular opinion, but Python had Google.

justsomeguy123··on Modern city dwellers have lost about half their gut microbes
I'm not worried at all. I was just commenting why others may see that comment (not mine) overly aggressive.
justsomeguy123··on How are the bees?
A comment here. It seems to me insects are all over the place in abandoned land. But here we have most of the land alongside the road planted (and sprayed I guess). Which is to say, farmers are killing bugs near their plantation. So, no surprise there.
justsomeguy123··on Modern city dwellers have lost about half their gut microbes
I re-read your post and while it's not overly aggressive it's the difference in tone and approach that get you. The original poster was like the hippie encouraging home-made yogurt and you were like the school principal saying 'this is bull, store yogurt has scientifically the same benefits'.

PS: I also learned while writing this I can't spell yogurt. Thanks spellchecker!

justsomeguy123··on Raspberry Pi Pico W: your $6 IoT platform
Is Pico their attempt at breaking away from Broadcom?

I am still waiting some better IO connectors so I can connect an SSD to RPi.

justsomeguy123··on “Harbinger households” consistently buy products that get discontinued (2019)
How interesting boingboing added a scihub link, but their link is to an expired domain. The correct link is https://sci-hub.se/10.1177/0022243719867935

Harbinger sounds so negative. How about long tail or hipster?

justsomeguy123··on Microsoft Donated Money to Gnome: Remember How They Attacked Open Source Before
> You want them to change their name, open source Windows?

Open sourcing Windows would be a good start.

justsomeguy123··on Contra Wirecutter on the IKEA air purifier
Likewise. All the debunking and debunking debunking means I have no actual choice. If anything things are more muddy. Welcome to adulthood I guess.
justsomeguy123··on Gnome has no thumbnails in the file picker and my toilets are blocked (2021)
Gnome people basically looked as how Apple managed to be firm about design and though they can be even tougher since they do it for free.

Such reasonable / obvious requests linger for decades and after a while the system has been rewritten and bugs are auto-closed.

I no longer report any bugs nor care.

justsomeguy123··on “Crypto drainer” template facilitates theft
There's crypto "pop-jargon" and cypto technical jargon.

The technical jargon does make sense like any kind of niche technical jargon.

justsomeguy123··on Continuous Unix commit history from 1970 until today
> the YouTube account associated with this video has been terminated.

"Terminated" is a pretty harsh wording for an account that was willingly deleted.

When you resign nobody says you got terminated. You are terminated when you are fired.

justsomeguy123··on Continuous Unix commit history from 1970 until today
Gource Visualization video which points to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7JB0mhrGCQ does not work anymore.

> Video unavailable > This video is no longer available because the YouTube account associated with this video has been terminated.

justsomeguy123··on Despite best efforts .NET is still not an open platform
The culture is still there. They just learned to do better PR and how to make money in this new environment (which they couldn't entirely control).
justsomeguy123··on Ask HN: Is it still conceivable to remain an anonymous developer nowadays?
I'm also curious what this is. Apple wouldn't give free certificates even for open source apps! $99 to give their users free apps.
justsomeguy123··on Ask HN: Is it still conceivable to remain an anonymous developer nowadays?
This may have been a mistake. Apple will have a reason to revoke your certificate.
justsomeguy123··on “Crypto drainer” template facilitates theft
I bet a whole lot of your day to day technical and administrative work is gibberish. Your yearly evaluation alone probably would require training for an outside person to understand.

Which is to say... don't assume jargon is pointless.

justsomeguy123··on Interview with Marc Andreessen on learning to love the humanities, and RSS
Indeed. We also kept chemistry and physics under control. Biochemistry too. Nothing can harm humanity.
justsomeguy123··on Make Linux Fast Again
> omg, don't do online banking on that system

Well... if you keep it just for online banking it's perfectly safe and fast.

justsomeguy123··on We got Linux on the iPhone, iPad and other idevices
We still have an original iPad at an older relative. It's perfect for Solitaire.

It also used to be usable to load a weather page but turns out Safari doesn't know the certificate authority since it's such an old version. I guess such an old Safari is a walking security risk too.

It would be nice to be able to put Linux on it.

justsomeguy123··on Eu.org, free domain names since 1996
> Handshake appears to burn the money paid. So that's fine.

That's not necessarily fine if the fee is in custom tokens. By burning they are just reducing supply, locking in the amount paid and increasing the value of their huge holding. It's pretty terrible.

justsomeguy123··on Eu.org, free domain names since 1996
Maybe renewal makes sense to prevent squatting but the question remains: who receives the money paid??

If the money were to be used to secure the network somehow, it would make sense.

If the money just goes to the creators... it was all just a money grab.

justsomeguy123··on Italy Is Held Back by 2.6M People Who Have Given Up on Work
I'd say you are approaching the talk in bad faith.

A talk is not a logical proof. A wrong phrase does not imply everything else following is wrong.

Seem silly to dismiss the 2nd phrase because you disagree with the 1st.

But sure, if you wrap it in fancy talk, it almost sounds like you are right.

justsomeguy123··on Italy Is Held Back by 2.6M People Who Have Given Up on Work
> Any theories on how supposedly inventing mafia makes this unsurprising?

Mafia is a parallel system with parallel jobs, off the books. It would be highly surprising if these 2.5M people didn't have a regular occupation they get paid with, except there's no legal paperwork.

> Any stats on how many of those 2½ million people actually didn't want the vaccine?

I would like to see these. And how many people took the vaccine just to keep their job.

justsomeguy123··on VSCodium – Free/Libre Open Source Software Binaries of VS Code
I know VSCodium isn't new but VSCode was released in 2015, so it took the community about 3 years to form.
justsomeguy123··on VSCodium – Free/Libre Open Source Software Binaries of VS Code
So glad this exists. It took people quite some time to group up for this.

I find it... borderline immoral to have an open source product and then have binaries contain telemetry and other stuff that's not in the main tree.

But, hey, we couldn't expect Microsoft not to muddy the waters a bit.
