justbored123··on US Supreme Court backs man who sent female musician flood of unwanted messages
"sent thousands of disturbing and threatening messages over two years"

Yea, that is bullshit. You can't harass people like that. Once you let the worst people in society get away with it, all bets are off.

I bet that if the guy had done the exact same thing to the judges he would had had a visit from the authorities in a second.

justbored123··on Address by the President of the Russian Federation
> Get ready for WW3.

Against who? Russia can't even fight Ukraine. China es calling for peace. This is a minor regional conflict. I feel sorry for the people of Ukraine and Russia that are going to suffer and die pointlessly for the delusional imperial ambitions of an old man that lives 75 years in the pass.

Putin is the new Mussolini, getting his ass handed to him while trying to invade Greece and for exactly the same reasons; mainly a low moral, low quality army that doesn't want to fight that war.

justbored123··on It’s raining PFAS: rainwater is unsafe to drink even in Antarctica and Tibet
What the hell are you talking about??? Technological civilization arouse because our ancestors living in "small agrarian communities" were tired of living in a nightmare in which their children died like flies and the starved to death periodically every time the climate farted.

I'm tired on hearing entitled little sh1ts like you that have lived incredibly pampered lives and don't have a clue of what is like to have to live without a refrigerator, hvac or modern medicine.

justbored123··on Facebook Censored Me For Mentioning Open-Source Social Network Mastodon
Buddy Buddy WAKE UP, Facebook is not a public service, it's not there to serve a nobody like you, it's a private company that exist to make money. You can't use their service to trash them and promote their competition, that is not a reasonable business model for them. To finance you by giving you a free platform to promote their competition and trash them is not a good trade for them. DO YOU UNDERSTAND???
justbored123··on Facebook Censored Me For Mentioning Open-Source Social Network Mastodon
So, the author is surprised that a private business doesn't let him use their free platform to promote their competition at the same time that they trash them...

The level of delusion and entitlement of some people is simply to hard to understand for me.

justbored123··on The chip shortage keeps getting worse – why can't we just make more?
It would be nice to see some serious study that could tell us how much of it is

1. Disruption of supply chains

2. Money printing for Covid stimulus giving additional spending power to consumers increasing demand above the average.

3. Money printing for Covid stimulus reducing demand for low paying jobs.

4. Scalpers.

5. Speculation on the part of manufacturers that prefer to increase prices instead of investing long term to expand production.

6. Other.

justbored123··on The Australian federal government is planning to de-anonymize the internet

lol, you need to lean about the history of minorities in Australia starting with the indigenous people and how they were treated.

Same thing with their relations with all their small neighbors and with "undesirable" immigrants.

This is a great place to start: https://www.youtube.com/user/thejuicemedia

There is nothing new to this in Australia's culture, is was just aimed at the weak and vulnerable, but as the famous quote by Tucidides goes: "The tyranny Athens imposed on others it finally imposed on itself."

justbored123··on A Screeching Voice of the Minority
The hysteria about this is extremely childish.

After the Pegasus news that showed that a relatively small private company in a very small country could have complete remote access to your phone and sell it on the market, do you really think that a powerful government like China or the US can't already do it??? How could you be this naive? Especially after the Snowden revelations.

And about Apple's having a change of hearth in the future and using something like this against you. Have you stopped to think for one second and consider that they have complete control over the updates that your phone receives?? They can quietly do what ever they want without you ever knowing and you can't do sh*t about it. So drop the concerned citizen act. We all abdicate privacy a long time ago when we sold our souls for cool free services like google and sexy gadgets.

At the end of the day the "slippery slope" argument boils down to one thing: do you trust your institutions? Any law or service can be abused, and the only thing preventing that is the integrity of the people on your society and the institutions both public and private that they work for. The exact same law that is used to fight corruption in a great country like Norway or Denmark can be abused to persecute political opponents in a shitty country like North Korea or China.

If the answer is no, I don't trust my institutions and my people, then you have a far more severe and fundamental problem than an specific law or service. In that scenario, focusing in an specific issue is like trying to cover the sun with your hands.

justbored123··on Why are so many knowledge workers quitting?
The author should change Walden for David Graeber's "Bullshit Jobs" and he would probably get a better explanation of the phenomenon.

"After being in the industry for 15 years, I still do not have a good short answer for what environmental consultants do."

That quote alone says it all. These people are not satisfied because they don't have a real job, they have a bullshit job, and they know it.

The others are more of the same, you have a "coach" of the obvious that even him doesn't practice what he preaches and a member of "multiple projects and committees" that complains about wasting time all day talking with no focus or clear purpose.

They get pay to pretend to work all day by pushing papers, write endless jargon-ridden nonsense and, of course, attending endless meetings.

justbored123··on Big Tech are supposed to be the plumbers, not patricians of internet discourse
Why? The media companies have always done so. The press is and always was "patricians" of printing press discourse. You can't say whatever you like on a news paper. The TV companies and Cable companies are and always were "patricians" of tv programming. You can't say whatever you like on a tv program. The publishing companies are and always were "patricians" of the books. You can't say whatever you like on a book and get them to print it, promote it and distribute if they disagree. Radio companies are and always were "patricians" of the radio waves, you need a license to operate a radio and they decide what gets on air.

Why the double standard?

Now, you can say whatever you like on the internet, you just are not entitle to force other people and companies to give you a platform to do so. Facebook, Youtube, this site, etc., doesn't owe you sh#t. If you want to publish something that they don't like, host it and promote it yourself, just as if you want to put something in the news that they don't like, or on TV or on the radio or on a book.

The insane and childish authoritarianism of the author of this article that believes that "Mail Chimp" doesn't tell him what to do with their service but instead he is the one that tells them how to run their private for profit company is both comical and sad. If you don't like the terms of service, stop using their service. That's how that works. If you think that they are infringing on your rights, them take them to court, don't click bait about it.

justbored123··on Young adult (20-49) mortality in Israel during time of Covid-19 crisis
I see your point, but the opposite is just as bad or worse. The idea that studding for years has no merit and that the opinion of a professional with 10 or 20 years in a field (20.000 hours - 40.000 hours) has the same value of the opinion of some dude on the internet that thinks he is really smart and googles shit for a couple hours, even if it's hundreds of hours, is just ridiculous.
justbored123··on A case against security nihilism

No really. You just have to do what just happened happen a couple more times and they are finished. If they can't protect their data they have no business, their reputation is destroyed and there's no point of hiring them if a week later the list of the people you are spying leaks. Turn the game around, info security is asymmetric by definition, it's a lot easier to attack than to defend. As a defender you need to plug all possible holes but If you become the attacker you just need to find one.

justbored123··on Right or left, you should be worried about big tech censorship
That tells you that "marketplace of ideas" is a dumb idea, because we already have proved a million times that people are not the rational creatures that we were sold we were for a long time. We are smart apes, but apes none the least: emotionally driven by our limbic system, very tribal and status seeking. Prone to rationalize all these basic impulses in a million different ways creating the illusion of rational individualism. The algorithms just shows us our true nature, don't make the mistake of shooting the messenger.
justbored123··on My take on the study from MIT that predicts “societal collapse”
Shale is not economically viable, regular oil is profitable at 10 dollars a barrel, shale needs 60 dollars or more. That is an extreme difference that we are not feeling because of massive amounts of credit pumped into the shale boom. Once the fake money dries up and the market prices that shale oil at its correct value you are in for a world of pain. Imagine the gas a the pump station going x6 and that affecting the rest of the economy. That is a world based on shale instead of conventional oil.
justbored123··on My take on the study from MIT that predicts “societal collapse”

Are you suggesting that oil is not finite??? Or that we have an easy replacement at hand contrary to the people that says otherwise such as in the "Planet of The humans" documentary?

justbored123··on Biden launches action on "Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag" – can it be real?

justbored123··on My trust in software, an all time low
I feel your pain. I don't have adds on my Windows 10 version but I still can't stand that It needs an email account and that it harasses me about dumb irrelevant sh*t and that It was incredible hard to disable those notifications and unsolicited apps like the "xbox bar" because of the mess they did with the control panels.

But lets face it, the alternatives are not much better. Yesterday I spend half an hour trying to update a free opensource software called Amass on my Debian based distro, a dependency was corrupted and I had to uninstall that dependency with apt, re-install it with snap and then I was able to finally update the app with apt. And, of course, the config file wasn't updated and it didn't even warned me that it needed to. I had to go to github and check by hand. I can't ask my grandma to do that.

justbored123··on Video tutorials now on PeerTube
You know that you can pay the same that you pay for Netflix and have no adds right?
justbored123··on Video tutorials now on PeerTube
I have to ask the obvious question here: How do you plan to maintain the second largest website on the internet that has high bandwidth demands to serve 4k video content and serves 122 million users a day, 2+ billion a month if you are not willing to even tolerate simple adds that you can easily bypass in 1 minute of your time by installing an add blocker or downloading Brave browser or God forbid paying 10 dollars a month?

My friends will not even host the torrent that they just downloaded for a single hour and my family don't know what torrent is and more important than that, they don't care. Good luck with really large scale p2p solutions. You must be really happy paying 100 bucks on fees to transfer 10 dollars on the Bitcoin or ETH networks, but hey! no adds or "evil" companies!

justbored123··on A classic Silicon Valley tactic – losing money to crush rivals – under scrutiny
Interesting, from the wiki:

Predatory pricing is a pricing strategy, using the method of undercutting on a larger scale, where a dominant firm in an industry will deliberately reduce its prices of a product or service to loss-making levels in the short-term.

The aim is that existing or potential competitors within the industry will be forced to leave the market.

justbored123··on Canada to make online hate speech a crime punishable by fine
Sorry but how is this a case for debate??? This is not a matter of opinion, it's an extremely serious accusation that a foreign government institution caused a global catastrophe of historic proportions. Do you have the type of incredibly solid evidence that would take to back that type of accusation in court?? If you do, then go to court, if you don't then there's nothing to "debate" unless you are shopping for a defamation lawsuit that is what would be a fair and logical consequence to that type of baseless accusation. People abuse free speech because they are not facing the due legal consequences for all the defamation they incur on. But just because it's hard to prosecute so many offenders doesn't make it right or legal.
justbored123··on Canada to make online hate speech a crime punishable by fine
The native Americans in your population will beg to differ, specially in the light of current news, but they don't count to you don't they? That is why we got to the point were we need this law. Because no matter how horrible other are treated all is good as long it doesn't happen to you or your group. The past were you were able to abuse these groups and commit atrocities with total impunity was "so much better" and we are going down from there according to your view of the world.
justbored123··on Canada to make online hate speech a crime punishable by fine
You don't seem to understand the basic concept of division of power. The law is enforced by the judicial branch based on the written law + legal precedents on an impartial manner, not by the "current political orthodoxy".

If you question the judicial branch impartiality about this matter, you question the judicial branch itself because there is no reason to trust their impartial judgment in any other matter. If that is the case, I suggest that you make and argument for anarchy instead of this one.

justbored123··on Canada to make online hate speech a crime punishable by fine
You are speculating. There's no reason to believe that. So far it only says "hate speech" and nothing about "power" or "white".
justbored123··on Some biologists and ecologists think social media is a risk to humanity
> contributing to phenomena such as “election tampering, disease, violent extremism, famine, racism, and war.”

Sorry, but what are you talking about? The holocaust happened before social media, segregation and slavery happened before social media, religious extremism has been going on for at least 2000 years and its latest incarnation like in the middle east happened before social media. We had 2 world wars before social media, election tampering? Did you forgot about the Gore vs Bush fiasco before social media? I could go on all day, what are you talking about?

This is the best we had had it on all those fronts today after social media. You are making no sense. The first "cross-disciplinary" change we need is more historians combating this type of unbelievable childish ignorance and lack of perspective of reality.

justbored123··on Some biologists and ecologists think social media is a risk to humanity
Well, I don't know how your friends and families are, but mine are quite racist and quite hateful of minorities and they were that way long before the internet.

Facebook just shows that, it doesn't change it. I think that most people (specially white, heterosexual and not poor) were simply living in a bubble of ignorance thinking the world was a much better place that it actually is and social media simply popped that bubble and showed reality for everybody to see. And now they are angry at Social media in a classical shoot the messenger reaction.

justbored123··on Ask HN: Do software engineers have leverage?
> Do software engineers really have leverage?

Yes, massive, but because of the unique mentality and system of values of engineers/nerds in general we are focused on solving technical problems and learning new things while the rest (management, RRHH, sales, etc) are focused on status and getting a bigger piece of the pie for themselves, so we get f*cked over by them very easily.

>How could we increase our leverage?

1- The single most powerful tool we have is fully sharing salaries and compensation. That drives prices up (and other benefits such as vacation time or equity).

2- Forming common fronts like low skilled workers do in unions or other associations that set minimal working conditions that avoid races to the bottom and exploitation (60hs work-weeks for example). In my third world country companies do this themselves and group in something called a "technological pole" that is just a gathering to cap salaries and avoid competing among themselves. So, they later threaten you that if you quit you would be black listed. (This resulted on a massive migration of engineers to other countries and to freelancing on the internet, they were short-sighted and not very smart :D ).

3- Tribalism. Start to see the rest of the other roles like they see you (management, RRHH, sales, etc). Other tribes competing for the same pie and act accordingly. Stop going along with the "you should improve your soft skills to make our job easier" and flip the tables and start to demand that they become better at a technical level to make your job easier instead. We are in high demand, they are not, simple. Make them work harder and learn to speak to us and adapt to us instead of the other way around.

justbored123··on Ask HN: Do software engineers have leverage?
It means the power to get a bigger piece of the pie. For example we made a quick calculation some time ago with a group of friends based on some numbers revealed by Accenture about how much they were charging a customer and we got to the conclusion that we, the devs creating the whole thing, were getting only 1% of what they were charging the customer. (Third world country with salaries below 1000 dollars)
justbored123··on Ohio sues Google, seeks to declare the internet company a public utility
This is simply g*rbage.I wish all my utilities were as cheap and amazing as google. Why don't we go the other way and make a law demanding that?

- Google services are free. If they are a utility they should charge you like any utility, go ask Texans and Californians about their recent power bills.

- There is an endless amount of comparable alternatives to Google, here you have 17 https://www.searchenginejournal.com/alternative-search-engin.... The idea that google is just as important and monopolistic as you power provided is just incredibly stupid. Sorry about been rude but I have heard from the same crowd that "facts don't care about your feelings" and that door swings both ways.

- Nobody forces you to use Google, its not the first option installed in a Windows computer, that would by Bing.com and I don't see any complaints. Users go out of their way to go to that site because is the best option. It's a perfect example of the free market. And even in the case of android phones the different brands like Samsung or Motorola make that call. Google gives you an amazing OS completely free.
