You can always exercise with an office job. You can not just sit down in a factory/amazon warehouse/coal mine

There are a lot of people with 4 year graduate degrees (with same cost) that earn less.
junipertea··on Scenarios in which Tesla FSD Beta 9.0 fails
Beta limited to regular drivers that are not specifically trained testers. Error cases can involve injury or death.
junipertea··on The cost of the “new way to message on instagram” (2020)
If corporations become governments, they can make their own laws?
junipertea··on Ask HN: Which FANGs are hiring remote internationally?
Why not consider companies that are not FANG? FANG is just 4, you can check with each. I believe you will have to be tied to some existing local office for HR reasons. Of course, there are always exceptions people whisper about, but I suppose you need to be exceptional for a manager to push for that. It is definitely not the norm.
junipertea··on Homeless Oaklanders were tired of the housing crisis. So they built a village
There are, they are also not celebrated. I agree with parent poster that it's a systemic failure that people have to literally build slums to live even among all that wealth.
junipertea··on Czech PM claims Russia played major role in 2014 ammunition warehouse explosion
The claimant is Czech republic in this case.
junipertea··on Google veteran pans Tesla Autopilot: “We were doing better in 2010”
You turn on autopilot by pressing the stalk twice, there is 0 interaction with the touch screen for that purpose.
junipertea··on Google veteran pans Tesla Autopilot: “We were doing better in 2010”
I am a first time car owner (with a Tesla) and yes, I struggled to explain my feelings when my friends asked "Isn't autopilot just adaptive cruise control and lane centering?"

Yes, it does just that (unless you buy the FSD scam), but it also feels like an integral part of the car instead of a addon for higher trim models. Everything (including the tablet) is centered around autopilot and it's natural to use anywhere. Would I use lane centering in a Honda or Hyundai? Maybe. I use the tempomat (cruise control) in other cars too, but I never felt comfortable in using just that to drive all the way to SF.

I don't think I would do that in a 2010 Kia. I might be wrong.

Tesla lessened my mental burden and I just watch other cars while it does its thing. I am also more confident as it watched other cars by itself using the cameras, it's like 10 pairs of eyes instead of 2.

junipertea··on Why Shortages of a $1 Chip Sparked Crisis in the Global Economy
I can't imagine a time where factory accident would be less inconvenient.

junipertea··on Working at Goldman Sachs Suuuucks, Leaked Internal Survey Shows

junipertea··on Chrome can now live caption audio and video
I would just see it as trying to make a best product and using their expertise to achieve it.
junipertea··on Outrun: Execute local command using processing power of another Linux machine
I agree that computing requirements scale as we go, but surely you don't need 4k at 60Hz to browse the web now? I regularly play games using steam link now and while it's not the full quality and framerate, it's just convenient (and cheaper than having a full desktop pc in every room). Thin computing seems much more seamless and workable now than it did in my college years with Sun thin clients.
junipertea··on Utah bill would require activated porn filter software on new phones, tablets
Most of us millennials grew up around near unlimited amount of free online pornography and we turned out pretty functional. It might help a lot to have functioning sex education from parents instead of pretending it does not exist.
junipertea··on Launch HN: Athens Research (YC W21) – Open-Source Roam Research
It’s the entire product.

Not him, but I used TW extensively. The problem was the entire wiki is in one HTML file (which is impressive), but it did not scale with additional image tiddlers. At some point it would just not load. There is a separate NodeJS hosted version which I ran for a year, but it had memory issues. (Again, probably tied to the number of images). I totally get it's mainly for notes, but I'm lazy and sometimes I paste snippets from papers rather than rewrite them, so it balloons easily.

It's fantastic software, though!

I use obsidian right now. I do enjoy the convenience of markdown files, do you have any specific use case where the graph DB would be superior to them? Would it stop scaling at very large notes? Furthermore, the biggest painpoint for me is sync and cross-platform support. I have to use dayone, a journal app on iOS, because the experience (of actually writing thoughts) of any other app is just too inconvenient for rigorous daily usage.
junipertea··on Czech gunmaker CZG buys Colt in cash and stock deal
I would be a big fan of planned obsolescence for guns along with proprietary, not easily available ammo, actually.
junipertea··on Yellen Summons Regulators to Discuss Financial Market Volatility
The point was it’s not a small sum for her, it’s in fact more than triple her yearly salary. An adjacent point was she makes little compared to how much she could be getting, and people still complain.

Her taking up that offer is no surprise.

junipertea··on Australia’s PM suggests Bing adequate if Google blocks searches
This seems discriminatory as hell.
junipertea··on Scientists fear pandemic's 'hyper hygiene' could have long-term health impacts
To be fair, some random persons datapoint wrangling can (and usually does) have large number of eyeballs than a life long trained professional with a PhD. While the data should be public and object to scrutiny (ideally by other experts in scientific community), how much insight would untrained people actually get? Apart from alternative facts and "just a flu". Many popular blog posts and opinions were proven to be flat out wrong.

If we don't trust the people dedicated to handle that kind of situations, who can we trust? I totally agree there has not been enough transparency (what panic would it cause if the scientists say "We don't know at this point. We think X Y Z, it might change completely in a month) about what we know, but I still would rather trust WHO/CDC (who have been proven incorrect multiple times) than some random forum with no credentials.

What politicians do based on these observations is a very different thing.

Interns don't stay for a whole year, but yeah, this is typical internship salary (it might have gone to 55+ now) at FAANG.
junipertea··on Norway investigates 23 deaths in frail elderly patients after vaccination
Given the prevalence of COVID in all countries (i.e. almost 10% of population of my country were infected already), it is not that low and will only go up exponentially as governments can't hold lockdowns longer. At some point old people will not be able to avoid contracting the virus, and 10-20% of them will die.
junipertea··on Show HN: Supernotes – Embeddable Markdown note-cards
I also really like this, I don't care for sharing per say but the note organization + tags is very promising. I am hesitant to commit to anything with a "coming soon" label, I'd rather pay the price when the features I want (i.e. ios app) exist rather than pay ahead for the promise.
