i checked out your blog and we definitely share a lot of the same ideals about sex- very cool. as a heads up, your blog's RSS feed is broken right now.
however, i hear the odds are much better for single women in SF than NYC. so if this site doesn't work out for me, i know where i'm moving next..
as for the name, i'm actually specifically not going after a geeky crowd (which is why my heart kinda fell out of my chest when i saw it was submitted to HN) and am initially going for younger, artistic, NYC singles. the name is designed to attract the kind of people i want on the site for now.
thanks for your comments on this thread! you seem to understand the female online dating problem as i do, and it's nice to have another female backing me up on here.
TBH, it is kind of hard for me to meet people online now. sure, i could go on OKC and find a hundred dates tonight, but most likely feel no emotional connection to those people. i'm trying to capture the vulnerable spirit of my early years on the web and create an environment where people who can actually connect with each other.
for example, it seems like the whole point of the service - to tag stuff with locations - is one of the hardest things to do. the only way i've been able to add a hyperlocation to my "dashboard" (instead of profile?) is by randomly seeing a link in the search results. i'm not sure why with their new design they couldn't add that link to the hyperlocations sections of my "dashboard."
OK just did a lil search, and it turns out they were called Talkito. So close! http://techcrunch.com/2006/11/09/the-y-combinator-companies
however, i am having problems getting anything useful out of this tool either. the first search i wanted to do was for people i follow in X location. i attempted to use the bio field, but whatever i search for in bio ends up with an @ in front of it, and it doesn't seem like it's searching the location field anyway.
also, it would be chill to be able to search for people i follow that have tweeted about, say, ruby in the past two weeks or something so that i can easily put them into a "rubyist" list or something.
its nice to just see everyone in one place in one list with checkboxes, which makes this nicer than twitter's list interface, but i have a feeling based on the filters (number of followers? twitter client?) that this tool wasn't designed with the average user for personal use in mind.
I still think it doesn't make sense for Mike to lie about what he heard, especially when it relates to such big players. Mr McClure's defensive, arrogant, immature rant indicates that a sore spot has been touched. I don't think we should take any of the angels' words at face value.
Making the assumption that all women will have kids and are mostly likely going to put raising them over their career is incredibly sexist - that goes beyond "not being an equal-opportunity douchebag".. that's like "doesn't understand women and probably has never had a meaningful relationship with one." The woman is best off not working with such an ass imo.
