jsloss··on iOS 11 Security [pdf]
It worked on me (It was a leading reason for going back to an iPhone after switching to android. The others being customer service and iMessage). And I think it will be an increasingly powerful differentiator as time goes on.

They don't need to do the reeducation. Ask yourself, will there be more security breaches / issues in the future or less? Will there be more issues with governments and companies taking advantage of private users data or less? Will there be more demands for your data in the future (health, context, emotional signals) or less? I think the answers there are pretty obvious, and owning the "we care about our users, their privacy and security" frame is going to be an increasingly powerful one.

jsloss··on SEC Emergency Action Halts PlexCoin ICO
And look how well that works. Another great example of bad outcomes from over regulation.
jsloss··on SEC Emergency Action Halts PlexCoin ICO
For now, you might be right. But parallels could be drawn to the first dot com boom, junior mining markets etc. So much of new innovation is funded by speculation and stories.

Even the current public market interest in the blockchain space, regulated as is is, is mostly driven by a good story and a hope for the future.

This is how things work, and given a longer time horizon, the market will sort it out.

jsloss··on SEC Emergency Action Halts PlexCoin ICO
Totally agree. The liquidity that ICO's bring to founding teams is a huge plus. It's going to better incentivize smart people to work on big, interesting projects. And get paid well to do so.
jsloss··on SEC Emergency Action Halts PlexCoin ICO
This is a great point. China's attempt is a great example. They can shut down exchanges, but Wechat channels pop up offering escrow type services, and boom, the market is back in business.
jsloss··on SEC Emergency Action Halts PlexCoin ICO
Totally disagree. We have to encourage as many experiments as we reasonably can to continue to advance / solve some of the big problems we are currently facing.

Over regulation limits innovation. We should only look to regulate when there is obvious and catastrophic harm. We can regulate after the fact, once we better understand the emerging system and the impacts it has. If potential harm is big, then it makes sense to regulate first.

The cost of regulation is harder to see then the benefits, but there is a cost.

Not to mention, do you not believe individuals have agency in this world? Why should you decide what I do with my money (assuming it harms no one)?

jsloss··on SEC Emergency Action Halts PlexCoin ICO
Ah yes, how dare we poke and prod at the validity of current governmental systems and regulations. That feudal era was such great times, if we had only not gone against the merits of the government of the day./s

There is little doubt that many ICO's are 'scams', and some people will get hurt financially because of it.

The challenge with regulations is, it's easy to quantify the harm they try to stop, but it's harder understand the impact they have on limiting future creation / innovation etc.

Tokens / ICO's have created a whole new, far more accessible way to fund and invest in new technology. Making it far more equal, fast, open and liquid than the traditional process.

Regulation is coming, as it should. I just hope it's done with an eye for encouraging the right type action, rather than just trying to stop the wrong.

jsloss··on Ask HN: Have anyone traveled the world while working as a freelancer?
Came here to say this. I've worked while traveling and it leads to doing worse at both of work and traveling.

Work, then enjoy the benefits of disconnecting from it as you travel.

jsloss··on Launch HN: Mystro (YC S17) – Automation for On-Demand Drivers
I believe it. It's so tightly aligned with the progress a driver is trying to make, and I'm sure they're doing all sorts of ineffective work arounds / substitutions right now. Think you guys have a shot at defining a new category here! Good stuff.
jsloss··on Launch HN: Mystro (YC S17) – Automation for On-Demand Drivers
That username though :)
jsloss··on Launch HN: Mystro (YC S17) – Automation for On-Demand Drivers
They mention this issue on their site. It seems as if they're helping to reduce driver churn (which can be as high as 90% after 1 year) and thus Lyft / Uber let them rock and roll.

Saw your co mentioned in the Techcrunch round up yesterday. Sounds like you've found a great job to build a company around!

Quick thought re: your "Sorry we're not on iOS" page. You give some android phone options (great job at removing a barrier to use) but you leave the viewer with a bunch of uncertainty around timelines.

I driver needs to balance the idea of buying a new phone (and associated work arounds) with guessing how long it will be do develop an iOS app. There's friction there that will push most people to default answer "nah, I'll wait"

Providing some guidance on timelines, or otherwise overcoming the uncertainty around them would be super useful to the calculation / evaluation drivers will have to make.

Two cents.

Best of luck in your continued growth!

jsloss··on Hackers nab $500k as Enigma is compromised weeks before its ICO
While you say this in jest, it is actually a good idea. The pre-sale part. Get a sense of a market need before you dive in.

Caveat being you've done the work to be able to add authentic value to the people you're selling too. (which is where most ico's break down)

jsloss··on Can this $320B Hedge Fund strategy lower Bitcoin investment risk?
Thanks for clarifying. Should be interesting to watch! (as this whole space is!)
jsloss··on Can this $320B Hedge Fund strategy lower Bitcoin investment risk?
I'm not sure I'm following. Is the illegal activity you're talking about related to the legality new crypto tokens in general or that bitcoin itself can/is used for illegal activity?

Secondarily, the article is only asking if strategies used by HF's could be applied to lower the risk profile of investments in Bitcoin. From the research he did, the answer looks like a theoretical yes.

jsloss··on Generate energy with kites
Yup. That might be because it's never going to work. Or it might be because it's just not the right time.
jsloss··on Ask HN: What methods, tools etc. do you use to validate your business ideas?
I'm a huge fan of the interview process Ash Maurya recommends in Running Lean. I'd add to that the understanding Jobs to Be done (Read: Competing Against Luck by Christiansen) for an interview process that really get's to the base progress a user/client is trying to make in a given circumstance.
jsloss··on Plasma: Scalable Autonomous Smart Contracts
This whole "disruption of silicon valley" from a financing perspective is pretty compelling no?

Even it smart contracts on ethereum are used for nothing other than the facilitation crowdfunding coin offerings, it would still have "shebang".

jsloss··on Generate energy with kites
Welcome to innovation and human progress. This is how it works, lots of experiments, a few winners. It's impossible to know what will win and what won't, so our goal should be to get as many meaningful tests going as possible.

This process is the answer ....

jsloss··on Analyzing Cryptocurrencies Using PostgreSQL
We can disagree with whether or not there is value in decentralizing certain systems, or whether a specific project or team is actually working towards creating value, but the idea that "If they succeed it will be bad for society, it will unfairly and unreasonable transfer wealth to the "early adopters." is just crazy.

First movers, early adopters, investors, these folks are providing funds to create things. They're taking a risk and if that risk pays off, and something valuable is created, should they not share in that value?

One of the truly game changing features of the business models blockchain enables is the alignment between creators, investors and users. All have an opportunity to profit if the thing works. That alignment is the wild card in all of this, how much value does having a large community of owners, folks with skin in the game and a desire to make something popular and work, bring to the process of adoption of a new tool or system? I think it's a big one.

jsloss··on Show HN: Ctxt.io – share context of whatever you see with others in seconds
"I was looking for a rich-text pastebin and couldn't really find any around. This works instantly in seconds without any account and prioritizes just giving you a link to share."

You should say this on your site. Found it rather confusing until I read your reply here.

Not sure how to answer your question directly but perhaps you're missing a bigger point. The price and ease of use difference compared to legacy companies is huge.
jsloss··on Facebook is wrong, text is deathless
Neither. Optimizing for user experience. Like it or not there's a new category of video content, short, casual videos. From the cooking shorts that are taking over facebook feeds to the the jealousy inducing short clips from my friends BBQ last night, this content category is growing.

Snapchat has the best UX for this type of content.

The simple idea of "tapping" to skip is the equivalent to the tab key when you're using excel. Life is better with it, and you miss it when you can't use it in other apps.

jsloss··on Facebook is wrong, text is deathless
Surprisingly, one app that is changing this paradigm for video is snapchat. Publishing content in a short series of clips that are skip-able with one tap is an enjoyable user experience.
jsloss··on To Invent the Future, You Must Understand the Past (2015)
True. But rarely do they analyze their way to innovation ...

Analysis leads to improvement. Improvement is not necessarily innovation.
