jshaqaw··on Atari 2600 Manual: Basic Programming (1979)
As a six year old I dreamed of building AGI on Atari Basic. Clearly I had a few things to learn about resource constraints in addition to having no actual theory of AGI but kudos to a cool product for its time. I think it’s hard for people today to realize how much access to computers cost back in 1980 and why stuff like this was so vital.

jshaqaw··on SEC charges eight social media influencers in $100M stock manipulation scheme
Look these guys are clearly scumbags but anyone who reads anonymous twitter posts and invests on that basis without assuming everything is a pump and dump is going to lose all their money one way or another. I would guess that at least 95 percent of trades based on this crew knew full well this was a momentum pump and dump club and just hoped to ride the wave and get out before the suckers. Not tremendous pity for their losses.
jshaqaw··on Elon: Let Me Help You Speed Run the Content Moderation Learning Curve
1. I do respect that freedom of speech is a slippery slope and once lost it is very hard to regain. I wish some of the free speech warriors in the last few days would also recognize that we Jews are not new here. We are a bit touchy by the 500th iteration of a. civilization under strain and a cosmopolitan-traditional value divides propagates the same eternal anti-Jewish conspiracies (they control they control they they) and b. Jews end up disenfranchised or dead. So yeah there is a bit of sensitivity to nipping this stuff in the bud before it takes root.

2. You can have a free for all hellscape of nazi man babies posting dank memes or you can have a business with ad revenue aside beyond scam supplements, gold funds, and maybe direct to consumer pillows. You can't have both. Nobody wants to wake up to find their product advertised alongside the most extreme wack job of the day. The "normies" will flee. Without normies or mainstream media attention the platform just becomes Parler or Gab - a bunch of troll farms and incel man babies - and recedes into irrelevance. I'm a normie. I find/found Twitter useful. Not so useful that I stick around bombarded with swastikas and wack jobs. At the end of the day Twitter is supposed to be a business and it has to be unless Elon buys out all of the bank debt and just subsidizes the whole infrastructure out of pocket (pro-tip this isn't happening).

jshaqaw··on Ask HN: Has anyone tried to model the entire business world as a graph?
Take a look at Stock-Flow consistent models which incorporate some of what you are looking for.

Agent based economic models were a really hot idea 15-20 years ago. They had interesting properties but to my knowledge nobody ever could calibrate them to generate real-world testable predictions.

If you really want to get exotic peek at what the Cybersyn people were trying to achieve.

jshaqaw··on Ask HN: Is there editors and IDE crisis?
Although in my defense Macs -especially ones powerful enough to be fun - were unattainable expensive for me from childhood through the late 90s.
jshaqaw··on Ask HN: Is there editors and IDE crisis?
Worthy response
jshaqaw··on Ask HN: Is there editors and IDE crisis?
Peak IDE was Turbo Pascal 5. Change my mind!
jshaqaw··on Things I've noticed while visiting the ICU
In my few (luckily) interactions with American hospitals for serious matters I’m struck by how much the hospital looks like a unified organization from the outside but inside seems little more than common real estate and a joint marketplace for 1000 sub vendors. The system can produce amazing outcomes but suffers from a lack of coordination. It is telling that after a hospital stay you get 20 bills from different places which have no connection to each other.
jshaqaw··on How friendships change in adulthood
This is true. Also true that because something isn’t of universal applicability that doesn’t mean it isn’t of merit for a specific group. I don’t think the Atlantic pretends it’s readership isn’t overwhelming upper middle class+ highly educated center-left Americans. There is a balance isn’t there between acknowledging differences exist and only writing things of universal relevance which is mostly to say nothing at all.
jshaqaw··on Evernote to be acquired by Bending Spoons
Evernote is still the only product that meets my workflow needs. Hope they don’t mess it up.
jshaqaw··on Mathics: A free, open-source alternative to Mathematica
Agree on the value of Sage and the Frankenstein.

Sage is amazing and valuable but the value of Mathematica is the cognitive ease of having one unified platform for everything. Sage is a nice integration of multiple specialized tools under a rudimentary common framework but requires a lot more mental overhead to tie it all together.

jshaqaw··on Why Lisp?
I love Lisp but the language has the highest ratio of essays to live shipping products of any language.
jshaqaw··on Algebra, Topology, Differential Calculus, and Optimization Theory [pdf]
Same here. I’ve been having fun learning a lot of math from first principles in recent years but it’s 1000 times easier when presented in notation/framework I already have internalized from code. I’ve found some of the work in type theory a solid bridge between these worlds as a sort of Rosetta Stone. Works like HoTT are challenging and require (me) to keep learning other areas along the way to fill in knowledge gaps but it provides me with a common framework to grok math concepts in line with computational intuitions without sacrificing rigor.
jshaqaw··on Kanye West is buying Parler
Would those be the points where he rehashes the same antisemitic tropes which have circulated for hundreds of years and every once in a while leads to the massacres of innocent people? Because if he doesn’t get an out due to mental illness he is just another little attention whore neonazi.
jshaqaw··on Calculus with types
It’s not exactly easy reading but take a look at Homotopy Type Theory w Univalent Foundations which is free online.
jshaqaw··on So you're using a weird language
Great post. I see weird language projects beyond solo/hobby stage go in two directions. The first is the “beating the averages” approach where they double down on the weird to attract higher level programmers attracted by the chance to play in a preferred niche. The second is a gradual shift towards conventional languages as the problem of maintaining a codebase at scale with an ever changing team becomes a dominant challenge. As someone with an irrational attraction to the weird langs my heart is with the first group but if I was actually running a business I’m sure the second would seem very compelling.

jshaqaw··on The anatomy of an ML-powered stock picking engine
"Predicting" markets isn't the challenge. Implementing real world strategies with associated frictions is. Show me a cash p&l or it's just a student project.
jshaqaw··on How Retail Investors Lose Money in Option Trading
All true.
jshaqaw··on How Retail Investors Lose Money in Option Trading
Source my friend? I worked in hedge funds for almost two decades. All of them touched options plenty. There is a big difference between using options to get a particular risk/reward exposure you want and clueless retail chasing some meme short squeeze nonsense which has the expected value of a drunk newbie sitting down at a Vegas poker table.
jshaqaw··on Cosy: A programming language that combines APL with Forth
Indeed but I double care as well :)
jshaqaw··on Cosy: A programming language that combines APL with Forth
I doubled care someone to get this running on TempleOS to win the weird baroque computing environment trophy.
jshaqaw··on SpaceX, T-Mobile to connect satellites to cellphones in remote areas
AST seems to be heading into a cost of capital war with Elon Musk - not a great position to be in. They have been telling investors for years that direct to cell was some secret sauce of theirs and that appears to be BS.
jshaqaw··on The Jank Language: LLVM Hosted Clojure
Love this. As a Lisper I’m always intrigued by Clojure but as someone with no knowLedge of or desire to learn to JVM I stayed away since I figured eventually I’d hit JVM questions/issues I frankly didn’t feel like dealing with.

Is it really 100 percent compatible with Clojure or is that just aspirational.

Also, is it the case that lots of libraries/workflows outside the core language in Clojure assume Java integration? I always thought a big Clojure selling point was the awesomeness of Lisp while having full access to the libraries of Java.

jshaqaw··on AppLovin offers to buy Unity Software in $17.5 bln deal
Unity is in a decent position to be a world dominant company as ar/vr arrives if it can avoid being just yet another vector of ad spam.
jshaqaw··on Ask HN: Is living in NYC worth it?
Third decade living in NYC. For the last 12 we’ve been raising kids here.

Sure when we travel the grass other places looks green. And life seems so much easier in the burbs or a less hectic city (most US cities are essentially suburbs once NYC gets in your blood…). And it’s expensive as all hell. But it would be so hard to leave.

If you are a person with interests you can find it here. What do I mean by that? If you get interested in something you are almost guaranteed to find a world class way to pursue it here with world class people. I don’t just mean business or career pursuits. If you get passionate about learning things and doing new things you will almost never be limited by who and what exist around you. It’s here.

But it has to be for you. For some people the energy fits like a glove. For some people, all they feel from the “energy” is an invasion into their private sphere. If you are footloose and free try it out for a year!

jshaqaw··on Byte Magazine: LISP (1979)
Maybe I’m just projecting my own childhood as a universal case, but for a computer passionate teenager, Turbo Pascal was pretty much the sweet spot between kids tools like Basic (particularly pre qbasic if my memory serves) and C which I admit was still inscrutable to me. I’m trying to teach my middle school kids the fun side of programming and 35 years later I can’t find an IDE as perfectly integrated for debugging as I had in Turbo Pascal 5.

The folks I always had mad respect for were those who could write in assembly on their Commodores, etc… I never had one of those machines but I still bow my head to those who could write anything meaningful in pure assembly as a teenager in the pre internet era when you had to figure out so much more on your own.

jshaqaw··on Byte Magazine: LISP (1979)
I’m a Lisper but I love Forth and Forth people. The only computer subculture as devoted to their weird little secret ancient Jedi art as we parenthesis shufflers.
jshaqaw··on Ask HN: Why aren't games marketed as the work of director X like movies are?
A AAA game costs how much?

A corporation making that investment wants to own all of the brand IP it creates for that money. It isn’t looking to share that value with creators altruistically which would just give the creators more bargaining power next iteration.

Similar logic in movies. Studios want to own franchises like Marvel where the value is more in the studio owned brand IP than any specific actors or directors.
