jsat··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
America banned pay bathrooms, and now we have no public bathrooms
jsat··on Matt Godbolt sold me on Rust by showing me C++
I see an article about how strict typing is better, but what would really be nice here is named parameters. I never want to go back to anonymous parameters.
jsat··on Matt Godbolt sold me on Rust by showing me C++
Had the same thought... It's backwards that any language isn't using named parameters at this point.
jsat··on DoorDash Offering Payment Plans for Food Delivery Sparks Backlash
This is one of those things where it makes people feel very smart to dunk on it, but if you think critically for a minute, the behaviors this enables are already available in objectively more harmful ways: credit cards and payday loans.

This makes things better, not worse.

Obviously people wouldn't be doing this ideally, but that's the world we live in, and this isn't some new phenomenon or some sign of the times.

jsat··on Finland applies the “Housing First” concept (2020)
If you compare to the west coast, it is not rampant. I just moved from Seattle to NYC and the difference is striking to put it mildly.
jsat··on Show HN: I convert videos to printed flipbooks for living
The flip demonstration video needs to be redone. Very poor execution by the person flipping.
jsat··on Future Ford's May Detect Speeding and Report You to the Cops

jsat··on Future Ford's May Detect Speeding and Report You to the Cops
Look up the most common causes of death in America and come back
jsat··on Future Ford's May Detect Speeding and Report You to the Cops
If we cared about traffic violence, speeding would be a solved problem. But we don't.
jsat··on The standard American household is now a millionaire, according to the Fed
Please. The amount of sensationalization here is beneath HN. This is average which we all know is incredibly skewed towards high net worth individuals. The median (much more representative of the "standard" qualifier) net worth of an American household is far, far lower.
jsat··on Riffusion – Stable Diffusion fine-tuned to generate music
Today's music generation is putting my Pop Ballad Generator to shame: http://jsat.io/blog/2015/03/26/pop-ballad-generator/
jsat··on The future of search is boutique
That first paragraph nearly made me spit my coffee. Self-parody even if you believe in crypto.
jsat··on You say “cave dweller debugging”, I say debug logging
IMO the "vastly superior" comment here hurts the credo of your argument.
jsat··on Programmers and Musicians
"Practicing: Working on your own projects"

Yeah that's a load of crap. I have my own set of personal projects, but I know plenty of great programmers who don't. This is pretentious.

On a semi-related note, my blog uses computer science to analyze and generate music: http://jsat.io

jsat··on Vim Is Saving Me Hours of Work When Writing Books and Courses

jsat··on 40% of Americans can't cover a $400 emergency expense
Inflation has been historically low recently https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/inflation-cpi
jsat··on Vim 8.1
I think editing friction can take a toll on your total mental energy. I also think that workspace automation can significantly improve the speed at which you complete a task. Vim macros make repetitive tasks on any size file a breeze.
jsat··on Vim 8.1 is available
If I don't want flair, I use vi. Otherwise I want more optional features that I can use to potentially improve my workflows. Context switches between vim hotkeys and tmux hotkeys involve some mental energy I could be using somewhere else.
jsat··on College May Not Be Worth It Anymore
Go to cheap state school and work reasonably diligently. Worth it every time. Private school isn't worth it unless someone other than you (rich parents or scholarship) is paying.

I got a full tuition scholarship at state school, and I'm reaping huge benefits now.

jsat··on Blloc – minimalist smartphone
I would like an e-ink smart phone please
jsat··on Amazon developing three new sci-fi series: Lazarus, Snow Crash and Ringworld
Dune is hard to get right... although someone someday will make an excellent TV show out of Dune I think.
jsat··on Oh My Gosh, It’s Covered in Rule 30s
Fantastic post. Opened me up to some mathematics I didn't know about. But please Wolf, these pictures are tiny.
jsat··on The FCC voted to start the process of eliminating net neutrality rules
My hope is that the highly tech dependent area I live in (Seattle) will force the market to keep an open internet. We have enough competition to ensure that, I think. However, that won't be the case for millions of Americans across the country. This is awful, but I think the outrage will eventually remedy the problem if telecoms overstep. Though telecoms may try more subtle means of manipulating traffic, which could be worse. Ugh.
jsat··on Amazon to Build a Permanent Mary's Place Family Shelter Within Its Headquarters
Kitchens, administrative space, etc would be my guess.
jsat··on Amazon Echo Show
Oh you mean like a Samsung television?
jsat··on Why Slack is inappropriate for open source communications
Mattermost is an excellent open-source Slack clone. It would be interesting if someone could add a feature to publicly host chat logs for indexing by public search engines.
jsat··on Elon Musk is boring a tunnel to skirt gridlock
To those interested in arguably the most ambitious boring operation in progress, behold, Bertha in Seattle: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/Viaduct/About/FollowBertha
jsat··on Does It Make Sense for Programmers to Move to the Bay Area?
Chiming in to respectfully disagree that New England winters are better than Seattle's. Seattle has a more temperate winter with fresh powder 90 minutes to the east, if you're into that sort of thing. Snow should be on a mountain with ski lifts, not in your driveway :)
jsat··on 85 percent of Facebook video is watched without sound
While autoplay has a major hand in this statistic, users know they can get sound for the video if they want, and it looks like users are willingly watching entire videos without sound (autoplay ends if you continue scrolling). I think it's analogous to the rise in popularity of gif(v)s.

The moving pictures in the Harry Potter world's newspapers seem oddly prophetic now.

jsat··on After 8 years and $128M raised, the clock is ticking for men's retailer Bonobos
Their khakis fit me perfectly. I'm wearing them now. They're my preferred pair of pants because they're a tight fit, but I can still wear them while riding my bike.
