jrace··on Sound therapy effectively reduces motion sickness by stimulating inner ear
Wow, this, if real is big.

------------ The effect of short-term (≤5 min) exposure to a pure tone of 80–85 dBZ (= 60.9–65.9 dBA) at 100 Hz on motion sickness was investigated in mice and humans. ------------- Very easy to producw, safe and not invasive. Just download a signal generator app on your phone and you could quickly test this.

Excited to see if it helps my partner.

jrace··on True Romance (1993) – A 30th Anniversary Retrospective
Mine too.

I am not a big romance movie fan, but this is my favorite.

Characters you should hate but somehow want to succeed.

IMO one of Gary Oldmans best role.

jrace··on Pi-hole v6
I run nginx, what is better about caddy?
jrace··on Jellyfin: The Free Software Media System
you can whitelist incoming IPs on Jellyfin.
jrace··on David Lynch has died
I would say that A Straight Story is even more approachable.

If you didn't know it was by Lynch you would never suspect it.

jrace··on AI headphones let wearer listen to a single person in a crowd by looking at them
They do do this, and they have for 20+ years.
jrace··on The artificial glacier growing in the desert
They also call the trunk The boot.

This is a very cool idea, surprising how long it lasts and provides water.

jrace··on User read the manual, followed instructions, still couldn't make 'Excel' work
You think punching someone in the face is ok, but changing there desktop background is going to far?
jrace··on A Lot of Damage in Grindavík
That does read weird

"15km long, or 9miles"

Would be much better

The mixing of 'length' and 'long' was odd.

jrace··on I trapped scammers in an impossible maze [video]
I have taken quite the disadian for these scanners after the took advantage of my aunt.

Since then when I get calls I keep them on the line to stope them from at least scamming one other person.

I have had three on long enough to actually answer the question I ask

"Why would you scam a poor little old lady?"

All three answered the same:

"You people in the west are rich and don't deserve it."

jrace··on A close look at the round-edged Wii U proprietary discs (2012)
Exactly my thought!

But why? There must be a reason to use something different than what is normal made.

jrace··on Exclusive hardwood may be illegally harvested
It's not just conceivable, it is real.

Workers in the mill are the ones who will die or suffer significant trauma when the blade hits the spike.

jrace··on Ask HN: Which non-fiction books had the biggest impact on you?
This Is Your Brain on Music -by Daniel Levitin

--helped me understand why listening to music has such a varied and profound effect on me.

Hallucinations -by Oliver Sack

--piqued my interest in the brain and the notion that it is running the show behind the scenes and what we perceive to be reality is merely a construct of our neural activity.

jrace··on National emergency alert system outed prisoners hiding phones
I wonder how many cheating spouses with burner phones just got outed?
jrace··on Working remotely can more than halve an office employee’s carbon footprint
Personally,my homes heat and ac use us u changed whether or not I am home. There has been minimal savings (from my own small sample size) to reducing either while I am away, as when I would return the system would have to work longer to restore the desired temps.

So my situation it actually is a net benefit to work from home.

jrace··on Duck DNS
do most home wan IPs change often?

I have never had mine change in the 10years I have been self hosting, and that included 2 address changes (same town, same ISP).

jrace··on Modern action films fetishize the body even as they desexualize it (2021)
Do you think in a culture that does not allow for divorce that people would be accurately reporting abuse?

And how does one "get out" when that is not an option?

jrace··on Are you living an AND life or an OR life?
I opened the article after I read you comment, and agree - something about that style is off-putting.
jrace··on Canada plans brain drain of H-1B visa holders, with no-job, no-worries permits
Nobody is being Forced into Euthanasia. I sincerely hope you and no one close to you ever has to consider this as an option, but if they did should they not have the dignity to choose?
jrace··on Canada plans brain drain of H-1B visa holders, with no-job, no-worries permits
Indeed it was.

Happy we are making progress with that and other degenerative diseases. I just wish we all had the opportunity to choose how our life ends, not just for our own suffering but also for those that suffer for us.

jrace··on Canada plans brain drain of H-1B visa holders, with no-job, no-worries permits
Care for a person dying of Al's and tell me how progressive our Euthanasia program is.

This has nothing to do with the article.

jrace··on Night of the Runbooks: a DevOps horror story
I am 1.5years in to a new role, on call for 1.4 years so far...

I still get calls about some service or application I have never heard of.

Technical debt is real and I lose a little bit of my life every on-call week.

jrace··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
Tying my shoes.

For almost 40 years my RT shoe lace would always come undone after walking for a few minutes.

Turns out I was making the same mistake on only my RT shoe, rather constantly.

Thanks Ian! https://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/grannyknot.htm

jrace··on High-Earning Men Are Cutting Back on Their Working Hours
I am feeling the same way. Finished last year with the exact same performance review scores as my coworker.. someone who admits to never checking emails, ignoring assigned bugs, and refusing to check the ticketing system.

After hearing this person bragging about 'being an asshole stops people from asking him to do work' and the getting the same raise I did has caused me to rethink my work methods.

It is difficult to change, but being a hard working people pleaser seems to be no longer valued.

jrace··on Internet Arcade
That site has been up for almost 10 years.
jrace··on Acoustic Fields: How to Build a Diaphragmatic Absorber (2019)
active noise cancellation does not absorb (and therefore prevent transmision) of the sound, it instead just causes the sounds to be "not heard" at a small location.
jrace··on The Evolution of THC Vape Cartridges
I use them, purely as the are very convienant and have low annoyance for people around me (smell on myself, smell in the air, smoke, ect).

I have tried but nothing else comes close for consuming extracts When outside my house.

jrace··on The Evolution of THC Vape Cartridges
You need significantly more to obtain the same effects.
jrace··on The Evolution of THC Vape Cartridges
Some concentrates (distillate for example) are decarb’d in the process of extracting it.
jrace··on The Evolution of THC Vape Cartridges
The article is about how the cart itself is the potential issue, and none of the tests results take in to account real life - or potential (mis) use of the cart.
