jquast··on SmartyKit Apple I replica
I really enjoyed building and programming on the Briel Computers Apple I replica, http://www.brielcomputers.com/wordpress/?cat=17
jquast··on Americans' plastic recycling is dumped in landfills
That's a rosy picture of landfills, have you heard of the one with an underground fire approaching nuclear waste? https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/20...
jquast··on Ask HN: What are some terminal tricks you wish you knew sooner?
fill the screen/DEC tube alignment sequence

    printf "\033#8"
jquast··on Anomalous CPU utilization on Windows build node caused by ads
does anyone else think that windows defender is a surveillance tool, not a security tool? To hash all known files, so that when a file is later deemed illegal, it can be traced back to its origins using this private file hash database? wikileaks, etc.
jquast··on TCP/IP proxy (spy, redirector) in Python with asyncio
even though I love python and use asyncio all the time, I think ]socat and tcpdump achieve the same means, instead of having a program dump str(binary_data) to log, as this program does, I would use the great collection of pcap tools like wireshark and others to view the data in a much more structured way .. also, it can be replayed! (tcpplay)
jquast··on Mui – user interface made of wood
Indeed, this is an example, it scores a grade "F" with fakespot.com, It doesn't detail that the listing appears to be changed, but does say "Our engine has detected that Amazon has altered and removed reviews from this listing"
jquast··on Cursewords, a crossword puzzle solving interface for the terminal
Very nice interface programming! glad to see my "blessed" library used :) thanks!
jquast··on Major Games Publishers Are Feeling the Impact of Peaking Attention
Here, here.

QuakeC enabled the community to demonstrate the possibility of good AI in 3d shooters in the late 90's. It spawned an era of popular titles being programmable. Some of those early bot authors went on to become lead programmers of further games, why did they forget their origins?

It does help a game to live beyond its years -- many previous games could become popular again with community AI improvements, and I'm not comfortable applying binary patches and they're not very portable either..

jquast··on Syswall: a firewall for syscalls
sounds like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Systrace#Features

more ... http://www.citi.umich.edu/u/provos/systrace/

it didn't work out then, but best wishes to the new generation

jquast··on Turn any program that uses stdin/stdout into a WebSocket server
terminal-related sequences?

but a websocket/PIPE fails isatty(3), so i don't think any kind of escape sequences are possible, here.

jquast··on Test Coverage is a Lie
For C/C++, and various code generation from state description tools like matlab/simulink, specific in the auto/aircraft/safety industries, I won't mention by name here, but no FOSS.

Anyway, I think about this stuff all the time and really enjoyed your article, thanks for writing it, it doesn't seem to be a very popular topic to write in such depth. Thanks again!

jquast··on Test Coverage is a Lie
MC/DC https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modified_condition/decision_co... addresses the given example.
jquast··on Egyptian Actress Dressed to Impress. She Could Be Jailed for Debauchery

jquast··on Ask HN: Command Line History
hi again https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17904390

your disk is probably encrypted anyway, so your risk is small. just be mindful to unset HISTFILE before things like exporting secret keys during development if you're so concerned.

jquast··on How I Judge the Quality of Documentation in 30 Seconds (2014)
I noticed a lot of FOSS bug reports/emails for my projects are coming from foreigners lately, and I spent a lot of time thinking about how to help. Translation seemed insurmountable. I considered a lot of options.

My conclusion was to always strive for brevity and clarity. Say it all, say no more, be clear, and be concise. I now consider a foreign audience that may take significantly longer to understand what I write, they may use translation tools, they may be confused by any "flowery language".

jquast··on Ask HN: What is your best advice for a junior software developer?
read more code than you write. for your entire career.
jquast··on General Motors generates new radio advertising insights
If its GM, then it is using OnStar, which does use CDMA, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OnStar

The customer pays for all this shit in their car, right?

jquast··on General Motors generates new radio advertising insights
also AR headsets that blacken out billboards and other physical advertisements, please!
jquast··on Millennials and Mainframes: How to Bridge the Gap
I learned Mainframe programming at a third-rate school in Flint, Michigan for a few hundred bucks (baker.edu).
jquast··on Poor mental health at work 'widespread'
The very charity that conducted the survey that concludes that "half" of employees have mental health issues, also happens to be a charity to help address mental health issues.

Also, they need more money! https://www.mind.org.uk

> We won't give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect.

In a perfect future where everyone with mental health problems got support and respect, I'm certain this charity would re-define mental health to a more broad definition, so that they could demand to continue funding, rather than voluntarily shutting down after having met their original goals.

jquast··on Fixing your terminal Unix History
I save millions of commands or megabytes of bash history, its customized for maximum values, and to persist often on both of my primary computers (workstation, laptop).

for the rest of the ~hundreds of computers I login to in a year I mostly just use default 1,000 maximum lines history of bash. I make no effort to synchronize across machines, it is helpful for me to keep them separate -- which computer it was executed on is also the computer to recall it from.

I have also considered full-time full-screen recording! I just wanted to express that using Linux professionally for 20 some years has turned me around to the opposite of extreme I began with, maybe you do not know that you are missing out on a fantastic "recall" skill :)

jquast··on Bay Area city blocks 5G deployments over cancer concerns
That report doesn't cover pollutants created by brake dust, which is a problem even from electric vehicles. See https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/03/170303091332.h...

I just wanted to suggest that respiratory health issues caused by vehicle traffic may be a more complicated issue than the metrics of that report suggests.

jquast··on Fixing your terminal Unix History
in early internet days, I would either chmod 000 the .bash_history file, or symlink it to /dev/null, to signal to the sysadmin that i don't like being watched...

20 years later and I meticulously save all of my own history, even command output/terminal transcripts. It has become too rich of information and important for me to callback to, it makes me a more effective worker

jquast··on Recycling in the United States is in serious trouble. How does it work?
I've always thought we should put responsibility of recycling on the seller, the incentive is not there for them unless they have to manage the waste. Walmart should have giant bins that accept our product packaging waste: styrofoam, plastics, cellophane, all of it goes to a single bin, and now they have to sort and recycle it. Then the incentive would change. Maybe we can't do it with bins, but a recycle Tax paid directly by the marketing assholes.

It wouldn't take long for Walmart to start demanding more simpler recyclable paper packaging over plastic if they took responsibility for the waste they generate for their packaging.

jquast··on Show HN: Map of Related Books for “Designing Data Intensive Apps”
This is also my favorite book, everyone please read it already!

The graph output from your algorithm is pretty nice, thank you for sharing!

jquast··on Arm Announces Client CPU Roadmap For Laptops

jquast··on Google tracks your movements, like it or not
How about your wireless access point, did it move with you, and remain the same, possibly unique, "wifi name"?
jquast··on Cable networks are speeding up TV shows to cram in ads
I cord cut 10+ years ago as well, but they've been doing the "overimpose" since the 90's. Almost all of the broadcast stations do this, typically they advertise the next program, or other television programs playing on other days.
jquast··on Ask HN: Any CLI or GUI tool for getting relative paths between 2 folders?
You could write it in one line of Python or so, using os.path.relpath
jquast··on Facebook stock drops more than 20% after revenue forecast misses
Facebook can take a hard ethical stance against allowing teens on the platform. Or, they could add a simple "if" statement on age, and not allow teens to be targeted for advertising.

Instead, they chose to implement the minimum legal requirements of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which prevents companies from collecting certain information from kids under 13, and kids who are under 13 just lie about their age. Facebook has really good data, collected for advertising, to know that kids are signing in, and do not make an effort to stop it, beyond a stern "Don't lie to us" phrasing in their TOS.

I think the point made here, especially with Disneyland, Candy, and Television is that children are targeted and manipulated for profiteering. And that's surprisingly legal.

But it is not ethical. Each company has a choice. I hope public opinion will see FB as unethical and unforgivable in the future.
