jquast··on Microsoft cuts ties with the Surface Duo after just 2 Android version updates
If Microsoft isn’t winning they quit and give up. they hardly make an effort. If it isn’t easy to win, they don’t want to play at all.
jquast··on Heat pumps show how hard decarbonisation will be
Also it’s more than just planting, they need careful tending for the first few years, whether fertilizing or fighting aphids or disease, I don’t want to just volunteer to plant trees in some far away place nobody tends to, lots of those “plant a million trees” programs become “maybe a hundred thousand survived” stories, especially if care is not taken to use an appropriate tree for the conditions it is planted.

Anyway I’d just like to know what you think about “gorilla growing” because very few people own more than an acre, and, especially where I live, people are very hostile about trespassing, it could get you killed

jquast··on Heat pumps show how hard decarbonisation will be
I only own a half acre of property and it’s chock full of them. I live in the United States, there isn’t any land that I would plant on in my county that isn’t owned public or privately, that the gas and oil or electricity companies won’t cut down, much less the commercial timber industry which takes up about 50% of the land, anyway, I’d love to plant trees but what would you recommend, trespass on private company and hope the owner doesn’t clear it out?
jquast··on How a Regex Engine Works Internally
it just explains like “this is what happens when you run the code” instead of “here is how the code works”, if you want to know the latter please read https://www.oilshell.org/archive/Thompson-1968.pdf

Regex is something of an early JIT compiler

jquast··on Bees struggle to find flowers because of air pollution
Smoke blocks the ability to chemically communicate. When an alert signal is heard, it is rapidly repeated causing a swarm. The smoke prevents it from being heard in the first place.
jquast··on Microsoft had three staff at Australian data centre campus when Azure went out
I remember Hurricane Katrina shutting down lots of online services, and directnic battling to stay online https://www.datacenterknowledge.com/archives/2007/11/05/prov...
jquast··on Ask HN: Why did Python win?
Yes, but I also had that very same experience with Perl, Ruby, Tcl, and Java during their peak heights of popularity, that they were pervasive and problematic. I feel the landscape of operating systems architectures were much more diverse, and the frequency of software releases and permutations of version combinations in the layers is larger than ever before.
jquast··on Breaking copy protection on a 1983 game for Apple 2
4am has cracked loads of apple ii games, and after doing several hundred manually, automated it as a set of python scripts, https://github.com/a2-4am/passport an article with interview here, https://paleotronic.com/2018/06/15/confessions-of-a-disk-cra...

These lab notebooks of the cracking process are shared for titles that could not automatically be cracked.

These are the only public records of reverse engineering these titles, though many did this in the 80’s the techniques and findings were never shared beyond the cracks themselves, and 4am is so practiced and proficient I think he definitely wins the title of the best apple ii cracker in history!

jquast··on USBGuard
If I were an attacker, could I clone the device id and attributes of the victim's previously approved devices? https://github.com/USBGuard/usbguard#before-the-first-start

Anyway I enjoy this HID stuff, I've been playing with using a computer as a keyboard to another computer. With scroll, num, and capslock LED's, bidirectional communication can be achieved and by injecting a small process I think some new kind of universal REPL can be accomplished.

jquast··on Let's Talk About Open Source
Like the rest of them, they have redefined “Open” as in “Open for business”
jquast··on Microsoft comes under blistering criticism for “grossly irresponsible” security
How much of Azure infrastructure is managed by Windows? Are they using their own operating systems, hardware devices, drivers, firmware blobs and tools, or are they struggling like everyone else to glue all that FOSS together securely?
jquast··on “BASIC Computer Games” code in modern languages
I wrote a small script to load Hamurrabi.bas onto my Apple-1 replica over serial and to play against it interactively, as a sort of screensaver.

Though I played this as a kid, I learned some interesting anti-mechanics by writing an "automatic player", that I can still get the highest rating by systemically starving 3% of the population each year, and that there is no need to leave any food in store for the successor after your final turn, and that losing half of the population to plague is actually in your favor.

jquast··on AsyncIO
When you’ve written over one thousand event loops, and debug another thousand edge cases and logic bombs like reading a blocking socket before it’s ready, partial read, or mac vs Linux vs windows peculiarities in your homemade hundreds-lines long event loop, you will begin to appreciate letting go of it all, and letting python manage your event loop for you.
jquast··on 3M heads to trial in ‘existential’ $143B forever-chemicals litigation
Genuinely curious, would any money be extracted from the personal accounts of any executive employee that made these decisions, current or past, from any of these thousands of lawsuits?

Unless the decision-making folks have their personal wealth destroyed, they really haven’t anything to lose. I would expect the worst-case scenario is that their stock portfolios will need to be adjusted, by tax-loss harvesting their losses in 3m stocks as an opportunity to divest and rebalance their portfolios.

jquast··on The Case for Bash (2021)
We should have better local shells that “drive” remote sh/bash shells through transpilation, so that we can have modern shells anywhere without concern for remote install, access to install or compile, compatibility, carrying customizations, etc.
jquast··on AWS staff spending ‘much of their time ’optimizing customers' clouds'
Probably because the API can be unreachable, timeout, etc — with a message queues it can be redelivered without permanently dropping customer data or whatever with only a stack trace to remember it by
jquast··on The U.S. cracked a $3.4B crypto heist and Bitcoin’s anonymity
So long as you pay capital gains and income taxes, unless you are suggesting tax evasion, which is a crime
jquast··on Millions of Americans nearing retirement age with no savings
Retirement accounts aren't in high-yield savings accounts. Using S&P 500, $1 in 2008 would be $2.61 at the end of 2023. Average APR is 8.45%, while bank savings is 3.5% right now.

Just a few hundred a month could have made you a millionare today through dollar-cost averaging. Deciding not to invest because you think our economy isn't as great as before is a terrible reason not to invest. If you are trying to "time the market" with your retirement account and believing that no time in the past 12 years is a good time, rather than dollar-cost averaging and investing all throughout, you're really screwing yourself over

jquast··on 3M to end 'forever chemicals' output
I hope this means my dentist will stop giving me free samples of Oral-B dental floss that contains forever chemicals, as recently as last month, I wanted to say something about what kind of doctor suggests putting PFAS products in our mouths but I didn’t want to be a Wikipedia patient https://www.classaction.org/news/oral-b-glide-dental-floss-l...
jquast··on Ask HN: Blind folks, Would you prefer a CLI app over a web app?
MUD/telnet-based MMO’s are very popular with the visually impaired https://mud.fandom.com/wiki/Aardwolf

> Aardwolf has a very strong visually impaired following.

I know there was a survey at some time that showed surprisingly large number of players are VI but I can’t seem to find that now

jquast··on Ask HN: Is it me, or is SharePoint needlessly complicated and annoying?
Microsoft doing its part in an international conspiracy to create busywork for the middle class. They don't want you getting too much work done, there isn't enough go around.
jquast··on Google Pixel 6 still freezes when calling Emergency Services
The only reason I carry a cellphone with me in many situations is just in case of an emergency. I wouldn’t take it for walks, to the store, out to eat, and definitely not while driving, but only for the safety of myself and others around me, it could save someone’s life. It’s the only feature of a cellphone that I need, everything else is secondary.

That they can’t care enough to address this issue is reason enough to swear off google completely. They must be so very cold-hearted, fish stinks from the head and all that.

jquast··on Crypto Is Crashing. It Deserves To
It’s also completely uninsured against losses.

My bank and fidelity can both go bankrupt and shutdown, but I’m still FDIC and SIPC insured, I’ll get all my money back.

Good luck with getting your money back from Celsius, Binance, and Coinbase.

jquast··on Changing jobs during the Great Resignation
Please don’t forget about social security, that one year would make up the largest contribution of your social security benefits, and if you worked at least 10 more years after that, the AWI-adjusted Gross Income would drastically increase your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME). Anyway I don’t see why you wouldn’t use your savings from that first year to lawyer up a case for child support modification, there is no law that promises past earnings indicate future earnings.
jquast··on Amazon intentionally made it hard to cancel Prime subscription in secret project
Pretty certain I was a part of their experiment, not Prime related, I just wished to close my account entirely. They kept replying that "someone will contact you in 24-48 hours", but nobody would. I got more aggressive each cycle, waiting 3 days, 2 days, then 1 day, the process was cyclical, I could not close the account.

When I changed my name to "FUCK AMAZON" my request was immediately processed, prior comment https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23720203

jquast··on It happened to me: I accidentally attended a crypto bro dinner
How to transact crypto when the government disables internet access?
jquast··on Are eVTOLs the “mother of all aerospace bubbles”?
Hard disagree. Helicopters are much less safe and not have redundant batteries or propellers. Joby recently provided acoustic results with NASA that show magnitudes less dB, you can look it up and hear for yourself. Having witnessed hundreds of Joby flights I can say from experience that it doesn’t seem any louder than a distant vacuum cleaner, I could hold conversations nearby without strain. Living by a highway with motorcycles was worse. I learned a lot about aviation lately and having also been in a helicopter and I sometimes think back that it was a stupid risk to take without having my affairs in order, never mind the aviation fuel, what disgusting fumes!
jquast··on I automated my job over a year ago and haven't told anyone
File recovery is always possible. Unmount the partition (remount read-only if you have to), use a program like hexedit to open the raw disk partition and search for a unique series of text found in your script files, copy and paste the contents into new file, script restored!
jquast··on Ask HN: Can anyone help explain remote access to my computer speakers?
Every wire, every circuit path, is also an antenna, speakers can become a receiver without any special device, just an amplifier and a wire.

A neighbor with a modified CB or baofeng radio is “talking trash” using AM, that’s why they’re transmitting on unlicensed frequencies with output against FCC laws, it’s how boomers troll, and the FCC is only concerned with high-value license violations that bring in mega-millions, like Janet Jackson’s tit on tv rather than a redneck neighbor, anyway don’t worry about it and if you get an SDR you could probably find the source frequency and go mobile and triangulate the person, if you care to. They don’t talk trash very long because they know of the possibility. And fuck the fcc, anyway.

jquast··on Man explodes his Tesla car with 30 kg dynamite after told repairs is expensive
bad enough that EV's contain so many hazardous materials, but to blow them all up into tiny bits for the wind to carry into the soil and drinking water? what a jerk.
