jpdus··on NYU Makes Tuition Free for All Medical Students
This discussion is ridiculous from an European standpoint.

In Germany all universities (with very few exceptions) are completely free and students have just to pay their cost of living (can apply for subsidies for that too).

There were many studies which showed that ANY fee is a deterrent for students from poor families.

In my opinion the current political development around the world shows that better education is absolutely required for humanity. Education should be financed via taxes (and taxes for high incomes should be increased accordingly to finance it).

jpdus··on Google will lose $50M or more in 2018 from Fortnite bypassing the Play Store
I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I am still a big fan of Android´s openess (at least compared to the walled garden that is iOS) and I think it should the right of every company or developer to NOT use a closed platform to distribute its app.

However on the other hand, this move by Epic sets a dangerous precedent: Factually, Google get´s economically punished for being more open than Apple. This does not feel right for me.

From a business point-of-view (when sideloading becomes more common) the "right" move for Google would be to fork AOSP, make new Android versions as closed as iOS (while still distributed for free) and prevent any sideloading. No sane CEO who is measured by increasing shareholder value could justify stayig open if this jeopardizes the revenues without providing major benefits.

I, as a user, think this is a sad and alarming development. However, apparently most comments and media do not share this opinion? Are there any reasons why Google deserves no revenues while Apple get´s 30%? When there are none, this situation can't be sustainable from an economic point of view.

jpdus··on A New Model for Financing Nonprofits
This is a good idea, but not new at all. For more details on the concept and some examples where RBF (Results based financing) is already successfully used, refer for example to Instiglio, a NGO consultancy in this space:

jpdus··on Sony introduces the DPT-CP1 digital paper tablet with a $600 price tag
I got the DPT-RP1 2 months ago for my graduate studies. Despite all the known problems, one of the best gadgets I ever got.

It replaced my notebook completely and lots of papers as well. The lack of apps (compared to Ipad Pro/Surface etc.) is a feature for me as the device focuses on its strengths and limits distractions for me. It is way more convenient to take to meetings than any other electronic device. Reading is perfect (and no comparison to any non-e-paper device) and note taking works well too. Had no problem with the app so far (on windows). My only cons are the high price and build quality (does not really feel like a "premium" device, don't know if it holds for many years).

Would highly recommend the device (RP1/CP1 - whatever size desired) for anyone who needs to read a lot of papers / take a lot of notes and doesn't mind the high price.

jpdus··on Google Maps Platform
> If you are currently using an API key, please read the email we sent you on May 1st, which provides a high-level estimate of whether your future bill will change.

Did anyone actually get this mail? I am using a key and even got a receipt yesterday but did not get this mail about pricing changes (user from Germany).

Edit: Wow. I am currently using Places Radarsearch for a side project which currently has a (generous) free limit of 150.000 calls per day. If I read the pricing table correctly, I am now getting 5000 calls per month on the free tier (which also has to suffice for all other maps API calls). That's a 900-fold reduction..

jpdus··on Questioning the motive behind the security allegations against AMD
Why was this flagged? While the title is clickbaity, this seems to be a well-researched piece on the alleged AMD vulnerabilities.

By the way: There were also some very interesting pieces by Matt Levine on Bloomberg about the legal implications of independent short-selling "research groups" like Viceroy. If you can't show that they are acting in bad faith, it is apparently not illegal to publish biased "research" to move the stock down.

Edit: Ok, just saw that there were already other threads about this topic. However this article adds some additional research and statements from industry insiders, probably it would make sense to just change the title.

jpdus··on I got locked out of my Google account for a month
Well, I use 2FA extensively, including for my Google account. However, there are even more vectors possible with 2FA where you lock yourself out of your account (e.g.loose backup codes, phone and access to phone number) which a human could easily solve (verify scan of ID, address proof, phone call, confirm that no activity for X days on the account in question).
jpdus··on I got locked out of my Google account for a month
Why don't they just offer some kind of emergency support with a hefty pricetag for these cases? Eg pay 200$ to have an actual human verify your identity? I don't think that would cost them anything and most people in this situation would likely pay any price to regain access..

jpdus··on Ask HN: I have Bitcoin in Coinbase, what should I do before the forks?
Does anyone have an opinion on the Blockchain.info wallet? This is, what they wrote:

"""Hello,

At this time Blockchain.info has no official stance on this debate. We are actively monitoring bitcoin network conditions and will work to minimize any potential impact to our users. In general, we follow the longest chain, as outlined in the white paper (https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf).

With that said you always have 100% control over your funds and private keys. Your wallet recovery phrase is compatible with any other BIP39/BIP44 wallet. So in essence no matter what happens you have control of these funds and can import them into any other wallet that our mnemonic/seed is compatible with. """

jpdus··on Google Site Search will be completely shut down by April 1, 2018
On the German page I get when following this link, there is still no shutdown notice visible but only the "normal" marketing page for Site Search (+pricing). Does the shutdown only affect US customers or does Google fail to communicate this internationally?
jpdus··on Ask HN: Is there a way to sell my MVP?
You are from Germany, right? What kind of legal legwork do you mean, is it domain specific? Would love to hear more about the MVP, contact is in my profile.
jpdus··on Tell HN: Political Detox Week – No politics on HN for one week
This!

HN is one of the few places where informed discussion is actually possible and even opposing views (as long as they are objective and well reasoned) are adding to the discussion (and often upvoted). Shutting that off just because of some unfounded downvotes or trolling in times where such discussions are extremely important is cowardly and a very sad move in my opinion. HN is better (and more important) than you think.

jpdus··on Income inequality today may be higher today than in any other era
Social tension due to racial diversity is lower if income/wealth is more equally distributed (just look at other countries or economically successful groups, this goes into both directions).

Normally I like you posts but this is really a bad argument and I did not see a valid counterpoint in your different answers. Same as with your recent, flawed and disturbing blog post [1]. Everyone should have his political opinion, but if you look at the data (and that is, what you normally are really good at!) regarding income/wealth inequality (without any bias) I don't think you can honestly say that everything is fine.

jpdus··on Doom, Gloom and Unease: London's Tech Scene Reacts to Brexit
Well, actually it is a good characterization of the leave campaign, which won the vote and thus a valid analogy.
jpdus··on Steam Sales 2015
The numbers in the aggregated top list don't add up. ARK for example is listed with fewer revenues for the whole year than for June alone.

This does not add confidence in the validity of other figures in this post.

jpdus··on Distrust Let's Encrypt Subordinate Certificate
From the comments:

A PITRA (point-in-time readiness assessment) is sufficient to begin issuing if the formal audit follows in a timely fashion. It's not possible to have a formal audit of the issuance process unless you are issuing; requiring it to begin issuance would lead to a chicken-and-egg problem.

jpdus··on The New Atomic Age We Need
This! In my opinion Thiel does not think far enough and doesn't talk about the real question: Is fission even (economically) competitive? In my opinion (and from what I've read on this subject), it is not and won't be in the foreseeable future.

I will quote myself [1]:

>People always forget about indirect costs when talking about cheap nuclear energy (risk factors aside). Nobody has ever built a profitable nuclear power plant without substantial government subsidies (way higher than for all renewable energy sources). Operators need government help for security, fuel supply, waste handling and much more. There is no insurance company on earth which will cover a nuclear power plant without state guarantees (ask yourself: Wouldn't a profit oriented insurance company cover these risks, of these were really as low and controllable as people say here?).

jpdus··on Plotly.js Open-Source Announcement
I have tried both, Bokeh (without the server) and plot.js (their python lib offers a JSON encode option so that you can use their Python lib with plotly.js without sending data to plotly).

However, I found both to be very similar and still don't have a clear favorite. Any opinions on which solution is better suited for (internal) interactive dashboards?

jpdus··on Timing attack against HSTS to sniff browser history in Chrome and Firefox
Ah, thanks! That why these external ressources are shown but not blocked. Interesting attack vector!
jpdus··on Timing attack against HSTS to sniff browser history in Chrome and Firefox
Strange. I disabled "scripts from 3rd party sites" and "frames from 3rd party sites" by default in ublock origin and this site successfully loads 329 external JS ressources from other sites (none are manually enabled). Does anyone have the same problem? Is this a bug of ublock origin or expected behaviour?
jpdus··on Why Homejoy Failed
There is a Rocket Internet clone of Homejoy in Germany, Helpling, which already raised a high double-digit million euro amount [1] and tries to grow as fast as possible at all costs (ads with vouchers in every local train and on the streets). They also had talks about a possible acquisition of Homejoy before the shutdown.

I always wondered who invested that much in a not-proven market, will be interesting to see if they succeed where Homejoy failed (my guess: they won't).

[1] http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/03/25/rocket-internet-he...

Edit: Just saw that they already ceased operations in a few countries and fired 1/5 of their employees, so it seems they have the same problems.. (found only sources in german on that news)

jpdus··on Stop forcing arbitrary password rules
Totally agree. At least 1 Uppercase means 99% of people just use an uppercase first character for their standard password. 1 number means they append 1,2 or a year and 1 special character means they append an exclamation mark. Entropy added = 0 (if password rules are known to the attacker). I don't get how anyone who cared the slightest about security would think otherwise and enforces these stupid rules.
jpdus··on Volkswagen Emissions Investigation Zeroes in on Two Engineers
They are (/were). Not on the executive board of the Volkswagen Group, but on the executive board of the VW/Audi/Porsche brands.
jpdus··on BlaBlaCar raises $200M at $1.4B valuation
Well, I would not call it a huge success yet. Certainly it gained some traction and lots of people use it here (I'm from Germany), but in the past it was repeatedly shown that BlaBla Car's business model has no lock-in at all and that it will be very difficult to monetize their reach.

Predecessors of their ride-sharing platform here tried to charge (low) fees and users switched platforms rapidly or tried to circumvent paying fees (canceling of rides when drivers/passengers already have shared contact details). BlaBla Car could only grow to its current size because they did not charge anything.

This busines model can't be compared to Uber/Airbnb/... in my view and I really don't know who invested at this valuation and how they want to earn that much...

jpdus··on BMW: All Models Electric Within Decade
