joyfylbanana··on BlockFi files for bankruptcy as FTX fallout spreads
Actually value is created when a scam company goes bankrupt. Less value destruction in the marketplace.
joyfylbanana··on Linux from Scratch
I tried it as well once when I was younger... Kind of interesting experience but on the other hand, it was mostly just copy pasting commands to terminal and waiting for the to run.
joyfylbanana··on Binance to acquire FTX
- Long term "Savings account" - a volatile one, of course - I buy stuff from online with it, household items (In country I live you can basically buy anything with BTC) - Travel, I book hotels/flight with it and once I rented a boat for a family trip

In addition to that I now and then try to pay with Bitcoins at other stores. Last time got excited about boltcards (https://github.com/boltcard/boltcard) there are few places in my country which accept it, but it is quite a new thing.

> Now consider crypto, where your ability to pause the market or unwind clearly-erroneous transactions is reduced or removed.

These should be quite possible, no? Exchanges have mainteinance pauses now and then, however if they had them regularly that would drive customers away. Unwinding transactions inside crypto exchanges is also not unheard of I think.

joyfylbanana··on Binance to acquire FTX
Nobody forces you to use Binance or FTX. I have been using Bitcoin for 10 years and I've always stored more 90% of my BTC in my own self-custody wallet, only used exchanges briefly.

It was not very smart to gamble with customer money.

> I wouldn’t like to rely on that “should”.

And you don't have to. Best always to hold your own coins yourself if you have that possibility, or use a custodian you trust.

I don't really get what you are talking about. Any sane custodial system has "hot" funds from where customers withdrawals are processed from. When the "hot wallet" drops too low, it is refilled from "cold storage" which is high security offline storage, and usually way slower to get funds out of because humans are involved in the process.

If business is going as usual, customers don't see anything, because hot wallet funds are kept at acceptable levels. Not too high, because you don't want to have too much funds online in a case a hack happens. Not too low, because you want customer withdrawals to function. However, if some kind of panic happens and people start withdrawing a lot at once, then you will always have delays, assuming that you have a sane system.

joyfylbanana··on FTX Appears to Have Stopped Processing Withdrawals, On-Chain Data Show
It is fairly common for exchanges to have (short) pauses in withdrawals. The majority of funds are in a cold storage, and for security reasons it usually takes some time to get the funds out from there "live".

If lot of people are withdrawing at once, it would cause minor inconvenience to any exchange. They have to transfer funds from cold storage, and that takes time. It is almost impossible to determine if an exchange is solvent or not until you know their cold storage addresses.

joyfylbanana··on FTX Appears to Have Stopped Processing Withdrawals, On-Chain Data Show
Nothing wrong with taking a caution first approach.

However to me most articles about FTX seem like "panic first, research after". Yes SBF's investment company might be fucked, but customers funds should be totally separate from that.

joyfylbanana··on US Attorney Announces $3.36B Cryptocurrency Seizure in Connection with Silk Road
No, the bug was in the withdrawal code. Concurrency bug, numerous simultaneous withdrawals have a high change of succeeding and you are able to withdraw more than your actual balance. Very common in amateur coded websites.

The information on the blockchain is not illegal. It is not illegal to store the sanctioned addresses or tornaco cash smart contract source code. What is illegal is spending those funds, or allowing customers to transact with them. In fact, you need the addresses and contract details to block those transactions.

Copyrighted material on blockchain has been discussed many times, it is just not viable attack because blockchain space is crazy expensive. There has been various data uploaded to the blockchain but you also need scripts to extract that data, so it also raises the question if that is even that accessible data.

It is how you measure "progress". For you progress seems to be only about business. I think majority of people (including me) are just delighted about this new toy that brings them joy. In my life it is great progress if I get new innovative toys that haven't been available before.
joyfylbanana··on The Ethereum merge is done
> the only cryptocurrency that is fulfilling its original promise

What was the original promise again? I don't see original Bitcoin whitepaper mentioning traceability or untraceability. There is a chapter about privacy features and no sane person would see a promise of untraceability in that chapter.

It seems that shills and spin doctors pumping their own crypto coins twist the history to their needs.

joyfylbanana··on Ask HN: What are examples of companies dying due to many people quitting?
> All this time the CEO was generating absolutely politically correct sounds: people are our best capital, diversity is our strength, etc. She would be better off if he was honest.

Honestly rarely pays and is also unthankful. There is only a little benefit and lots of downsides, such as people getting seriously pissed at you. It is not a wonder that corporate leadership roles are filled up with people who see no problem of talking bullshit all day.

joyfylbanana··on Ask HN: What are examples of companies dying due to many people quitting?
> That studio owner literally made a billion dollar mistake by not simply being fair early on to the team. Never, ever, treat a team that has achieved rare success as replaceable cogs. If they've shipped, they can find more money people any time they want.

That wisdom applies to that specific industry. In gaming, the people you hire are the asset. However the same doesn't apply to all industries. Sometimes people are more and sometimes less replaceable. If you are running a fast food chain and manage to piss all your employees, yes, it is likely a problem, but if you hire new people and fix your behaviour it is likely that the business will continue to run as usual.

joyfylbanana··on Increase: Banking API
In my understanding most fraud in the fiat world is similarly irreversible, different actors just absorb the costs of the fraud, in the end consumers foot the bill as increased prices.

Fraud is huge industry, the fraud models and attack vectors in the fiat world is different than in the crypto world. In the end wherever there is enough money, there will be fraud as well.

joyfylbanana··on Investors sue Treasury Department for blacklisting crypto platform Tornado Cash
> The problem is that on ethereum it's not possible to censor a deployed contract.

It is possible, via a hard work. Similarly as it was possible to transition from PoW to PoS. The question is, if there is political will for that. Clearly changing the protocol rules is possible has it has been done with ethereum in the past, including for censorship reasons (in the earlier hard fork the reason was to cancel a hack).

joyfylbanana··on Ask HN: Should I checkmate my employer?
Depending on your life situation, I would greatly consider starting your own company. If you are willing to work on IT there are always possibilities.
joyfylbanana··on WeWork's former CEO has a new startup, reportedly valued at more than $1B
This claim about renting being soulless experience is just bullshit. You can perfectly be friends with your neighbours etc with just renting, if you want that is. Most people usually socialize with other circles. I have been renting and owning along the years, always been on friendly terms with my neighbours, the fact if I am renting or owning hans't been a big factor.

I also live in Europe though.

joyfylbanana··on Visa, Mastercard suspend payments for ad purchases on PornHub, MindGeek
Though bitcoin volatility has been going down along the years, it might be quite stable after 10 years or so.
joyfylbanana··on Visa, Mastercard suspend payments for ad purchases on PornHub, MindGeek
Pornhub is committing the crime here. Visa was just processing payments here - and isn't any more, since they stopped it. Why isn't everyone talking about pornhub and demanding them to ban that?

Pornhub essentially is already their own payment processor, as it looks like they are processing cryptocurrency payments from the customers.

joyfylbanana··on What’s the strangest thing you ever found in a book?
I quite recently bought a used book for something like $100. Certain books can be expensive, it was not a popular or particularly good book, but the writer was a character and I guess therefore his written books are valuable niche items... Also no more will be printed, so there is limited supply. Similar for some old music sheets or records.

However these are definitely not liquid, if you are going to sell them you maybe have to store them for a long time.

joyfylbanana··on Your job was probably outsourced for the reason you suspected
> Also have worked with phenomenal Indian devs who were paid the same as me.

I have almost never seen a company where people are paid exactly the same... Usually there are differences. I'm pretty sure your Indian buddies didn't have exactly the same salary.

If you pay 80% less to Indian remote worker it would stupid to expect the same result. But maybe you are in some bullshit corporate environment and don't even want the results, you just want to look like you are saving the corporate some money or whatever. Often these outsourcing choices are about corporate bullshit.

However if you are looking for results, you could hire top people from cheap cost of living like India or so with maybe 10% or 20% cheaper than the western counterparts. I'm pretty sure that's possible, you don't save 50% but you can for sure get a little bit more bang for the buck if you are willing to do the work of filtering good candidates remotely.

joyfylbanana··on Former Coinbase PM charged in cryptocurrency insider trading tipping scheme
Depends on how you use the exchanges. If you just buy and sell BTC and keep your coins off-exchange, there is little reason to care about whatever schemes the exchanges are doing. If you start playing with leverage, you will be putting much more trust at stake, and it is your individual decision to do that. I have been involved with BTC community for many years and most Bitcoiners I know do not trade back and forth, do not buy that much shitcoins and do not store their coins on exchanges, so these schemes do not affect them.
