Why can't I POST you a message? Or myself as a new acquaintance? Once I'm your friend, why not POST a meetup for the two of us so I can PUT a new date in it or DELETE it later?
"Some time" depending on your own needs and life rythmn, of course.
Some kernels may not get memory back by themselves and expect each application to give it back. We're lucky that the kernels we use everyday do, but we may one day have to write for a target OS where it's not the case. Just hoping "the kernel will save us" is a practice as bad as relying on undefined behaviors.
If you're coding correctly, you have exactly as much malloc()'s as you have free()'s, so when rewinding the stack to exit, your application is gonna free() everything anyway.
Speaking of resources, what about leftover content in FIFOs or shm threads that you just locked?
And when you got OCD, you're only satisfied with this:
$ valgrind cat /var/log/*
...
==17473== HEAP SUMMARY:
==17473== in use at exit: 0 bytes in 0 blocks
==17473== total heap usage: 123 allocs, 123 frees, 2,479,696 bytes allocated
==17473==
==17473== All heap blocks were freed -- no leaks are possible
==17473==
==17473== For counts of detected and suppressed errors, rerun with: -v
==17473== ERROR SUMMARY: 0 errors from 0 contexts (suppressed: 4 from 4)
(cat was an easy choice and all I got on this box, but I've had bigger stuff already pass the "no leaks are possible" certification)To attain this state of zen-itude, just look up something that you'd like to do where documentation is hard to come by ("how to write your own shell from scratch" is a funny one if you can want to learn a LOT about UNIX) and start your own project.

Yes, it's far-fetched and like some said further down the comments, you "can't" run out of memory in Linux, but straight killing a service is never good.
(Disclosure: I got OCD too, this is not meant to make C development hostile to people with OCD.)
Error checking was enforced for EVERY syscall, be it malloc() or open(). Checking for errors was indeed required but not enough: proper and graceful shut down was required too.
I was taught C at Epitech. A single segfault, no matter insidious, was a valid reason to render a whole project NULL. We often had evaluations ran with LD_LIBRATY_PATH=malloc_that_fails.so or just piping /dev/urandom to stdin...
Needless to say, calling exit() when a call to malloc() failed wasn't an acceptable recover routine.
And Spartacus. And possibly Batman. Any questions?

This is not even "news" and the "I-am-picky-about-my-comments" bit prevents it from being discussion, escalation of discussion or anything else that could be relevant in this place. Also, the appeal to "the node community" when the issue at hands is just tangentially linked to it makes it linkbait.
Seriously, this is getting tiring. Actually seeing these issues happen is one thing: it's real, it's happening, it's life and our community, etc... Now having to bear with every blogger jumping the band wagon for the same copypasta of "Dear community of <%= @LANGUAGE %>, I love you, but you screwed up about <%= @ISSUE %>, now we need to do better"? I'm done with it.
As for all the name-calling on both sides of the argument, this is ridiculous. Fine, we're moving away from a "male-dominated culture" by becoming an "idiots-from-all-genders-dominated culture". Today, I'm ashamed to call myself a member of this community.
_Because we have to hate him.
_He didn't do anything wrong.
_Because he's the hero Open Source Software deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll hate him. Because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. RMS.
Tried to curl it, exact content, no 302 towards a "<script>window.close</script>",... Got anything?
I'm angry because this week, our splendid BBS was just a tech version of US Weekly (or The Sun-Herald if "mate" is any indication of you being Aussie).
No, actually, fuck YOU. Everyone out there who is going all white-knight on "Oh no, this is not a good situation yadda yadda, you're being exploited, abused,... You're in such abusive relationship that you don't even see it". The job posting was worded to be terrible just to ensure only the most motivated and willing would apply.
Does this mean PA are looking for a slave? No, there are better ways to get yourselves a slave and a lot of startups are doing it without anyone batting an eyelash. Look around you: unpaid internships, low salaries that don't compute with the living costs in the area, all these talks of "sure, you start with a low salary but you'll get equity and stock-options",... This is the real bullshit happening around us every day.
All of this talk about "he's working in awful conditions" when he's describing his happiness is making me sick. Who gave any of us the Judgement Stick to impose our views on other people? The real abuse Kenneth is getting is from anyone putting words he never said in his mouth. He's doing great stuff for a great company who SUPPORTS him whole-heartedly. Why is this crowd trying to disminish his proudness of being part of a family?
We've broken the boundaries of the "9-to-5" job. We're beginning to see the myth of developers working only from the workplace crumbling in front of our eyes and I'm only expected to be at work during the day because we got a sales team whose job IS 9-to-5. Because in the end it's not about our capacity to seat 40 hours in an office but our capacity and desire to get stuff done. And some of us are burning with it, don't deny them. Yes we don't count our hours but what would be our alternatives? Go home while we're HAVING FUN? And I can't picture a workplace where I would be told "Okay, you did your thing. Go home and continue it tomorrow morning." I stay late because I like it, sometimes for the 1Gbps fiber, sometimes because there's still stuff I want to do. Yes, two people could do my job and we could share the hats. But we could also hire 50 people to share the hats and just produce even less.
Stop hating and go slap the companies who really deserve it, all the one who boast their funding, business model, clients, w/ever... and think you're being "arrogant" when you ask for a decent salary.
But for once, I'm seeing a different trend. People really do care for Yauch's last will as an artist. And people don't think girl empowerment, though noble, should be used to trample respect and other values we hold dear as human beings.
So for once, more people are speaking with moderated words. We see both sides of the arguments, there's less "line-in-the-sand" declarations,... Maybe we could try again next time we get in a gender-related debate :)
