josephpmay··on Meta Ray-Ban Display
It's weird that they give a figure for PPV but not FOV. That tells me that the FOV must be pretty terrible
josephpmay··on What if we made advertising illegal?
Most grocery stores charge brands for better shelf positions
josephpmay··on The long-awaited Friend Compound laws in California
One thing that’s incorrect in the article:

SB 684 only works on multifamily-zoned lots, but starting in July, it’s getting replaced by SB 1123, which works on “vacant or uninhabitable” single-family lots

josephpmay··on Alzheimer's biomarkers now visible up to a decade ahead of symptoms
There’s been evidence recently that GLP-1 Agonists can delay the onset of Alzheimer's symptoms. Look up the evoke and evoke+ trials. This might be the first “real” treatment for Alzheimer’s, and it’s relatively low risk.
josephpmay··on The Costco of Housing is Costco? The retailer's plan to use CA housing laws
Hi, I'm the person who wrote the Twitter thread this article is based off of, so happy to answer any questions about it
josephpmay··on McDonald's pushed customers to the brink on price. They're starting to push back
The trick to inexpensive McDonalds is to use the app
josephpmay··on Curley vs. Electric Vehicle Co. (1902)
Link isn't working for me on Safari
josephpmay··on Ask HN: What tech is under the radar with all attention on ChatGPT etc.?
We've all pretty much forgotten about AR/VR

But Apple's going to be launching their headset next month

josephpmay··on JPMorgan bought the nickel that turned out to be stones
I believe that's exactly what's going on here. I recall first hearing about this story a few weeks ago
josephpmay··on Microsoft looks to tame Bing chatbot
A number of comments are recommending using various services relying on OpenAI's API, but I really don't think Sidney is based on davinci-003. Sidney has a level of coherence and "emotion" that appears to be far beyond normal GPT3, and I don't think you'd get that out of rule prompting, reinforcement learning, or finetuning parameters.
josephpmay··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
I’ve used the same Sonicare toothbrush for 20 years. It somehow still holds a nearly month-long charge. It’s sad to hear their quality has gone downhill
josephpmay··on Buy hi-resolution satellite images of any place on earth
You can do exactly that from this link: https://app.skyfi.com/welcome
josephpmay··on HoloKit relaunched, $129 AR Headset accessory for iPhone
We originally launched the Mira Prism in this market in 2017 before pivoting to enterprise. https://www.mirareality.com/

It looks like they have much better software than we had at launch, though.

The experience for phone-based headsets is really pretty good. The issue is that it’s a really hard sell for consumers at that price point for seemingly a piece of plastic, and the price point is necessary for the optics unless you have massive volume. The other issue is of course the bulky form factor.

josephpmay··on Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery – Bad Writing
The show is a far better sendoff of the mid-2010’s tech bro than anything on HBO’s Silicon Valley
josephpmay··on Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery – Bad Writing
I think part of the point of the movie was that EVERY character was a psychopath who prioritized their own interests over what would be true or best, and that scene shows that she’s not exempt from that
josephpmay··on [dead]
Flagged. Old article unrelated to recent news
josephpmay··on NASA finds super-emitters of methane
Yes, burning methane converts it to CO2, which is much less harmful of a greenhouse gas
josephpmay··on Show HN: I may have created a new type of puzzle
Maybe change the animal picture to have them holding the item in their mouth?
josephpmay··on Where's the fun in accessibility?
Something I’ve done sometimes is make the alt-text for images humorous, especially when the image is hard to describe. I’ve worried a bit though that screen-reader users might find these longer descriptions annoying
josephpmay··on SEC issues more than $17M award to a whistleblower
It's often joked that the US government considers their jurisdiction world-wide. If the company does business in the US, there's a good chance the these programs might apply.
josephpmay··on Amazon memo: Here’s why we should acquire Ring (2017)
Amazon is pretty famous for requiring everyone to read memos and provide feedback ahead of time to be able to talk in the meetings
josephpmay··on Volkswagen bringing back Scout brand truck as electric vehicle made in America
This is actually a pretty interesting story, from a career perspective:

The CEO of VW North America is on vacation with his family, sees a restored classic Scout, and falls in love with it. He finds out that coincidentally VW now owns the rights to the Scout brand, so he steps down from his post to start a new Scout subsidiary.

josephpmay··on A phone app called Lumenate claims to alter the brain’s rhythms (2021)
This sounds to me more like hypnotism, where you're using external stimuli to induce a specific brain wave state, rather than hallucinogenic tripping, where you're inhibiting some of your brain's filtering mechanisms to see phenomena and form connections that would normally be filtered out.

Honestly, this sounds more useful, at least in app form. Not a great article, but I'll definitely be trying it out myself.

josephpmay··on Invest in Lines, not Dots (2010)
I'm submitting this to HN because I think as the pace of funding slows down, this is going to become increasingly important advice
josephpmay··on What Is LaMDA and What Does It Want?
Note that Blake Lemoine has a history of pulling elaborate attention-grabbing stunts, which makes his claims about LaMDA more suspect than if they were made by someone else
josephpmay··on Amtrak is streaming an empty railroad on Twitch
Twitch is more culturally relevant, so they get more attention streaming on Twitch.

I saw when this first started getting attention, and it was from Gen-Z rail fans who thought that it’s hysterical some young social media manager convinced Amtrak to stream on Twitch. YouTube wouldn’t have gotten the same reaction.

josephpmay··on Roger Ebert: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1995)
Anyone else get a scamware popup on the site? I would not expect it from rogerebert.com
josephpmay··on My friends and I are buying 1 of the 11 surviving copies of the US Constitution
I wouldn’t be surprised if there are DAOs out there doing exactly that. I know of one that is buying up carbon emission credits to drive their prices up in cap-and-trade systems to force corporations to reduce their emissions rather than buying credits
josephpmay··on My friends and I are buying 1 of the 11 surviving copies of the US Constitution
We’ll have to wait and see what the structure of the DAO is (I think the contract was released this morning, but I haven’t read it yet), but it’s pretty trivial to design this to prevent that from happening. You also want to make sure that no group gains too much power in the DAO and votes to destroy it.
josephpmay··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch review: Apple’s mighty Macs
All of Apple’s hardware devices sold in the US are manufactured in China, with the exception (I think?) of the Mac Pro. Their chips are fabbed in Taiwan. This has been the case the decades and is pretty much common knowledge. Nobody is hiding anything.
