josephpmay··on Why Am I So Lazy?
From the little "Sloth" wrote, it sounds like it's possible she might have undiagnosed ADHD.

As someone with ADHD myself, I instantly recognized the inability to get myself to start working on something until the last minute (even if I really, really want to do it) and the piles clothes (despite my propensity for cleanliness). Another hallmark of ADHD that many don't know about is bursts of almost manic productivity for random tasks or when under extreme pressure.

If she does have ADHD, Polly's answer is both unhelpful and somewhat dangerous.

If you have enough karma there's a "flag" button, but I don't see any reason to flag PR pieces that have useful information in them
josephpmay··on The World's Best Film School Is Free on YouTube
Great article, but misleading title. These YouTube videos do a good job of teaching armatures (like myself) small details of movie making, but they don’t come close to a film school education (which itself is far away from getting experience making films and working under world-class movie makers)
josephpmay··on Behind the fall and rise of China's Xiaomi
It’s a PR-driven interest piece, like a lot of what Wired and similar publications publish

josephpmay··on Where People Spend the Most and Least on Rent in America
There's a huge generational shift going on. It used to be that everybody owned a home, often starting in their 20's but definitely by their 30's. Now more and more people are still renting into their 30's

Housing costs in America have gone through the roof, so it's much harder to afford a down-payment. Also, it's generally said that millennials place a higher value on mobility and prefer to live in urban cores, where more of the housing is rentals and there are fewer single-family homes.

josephpmay··on Vision Kit – An image recognition device that can see and identify objects
For awhile I’ve wanted to build a hat that automatically takes a picture of every dog that I see. This looks like it could be a great start for that project.

josephpmay··on G.M. Unveils Its Driverless Cars, Aiming to Lead the Pack
This comment is unfortunately not about the article, because I can’t view it on my iPhone. The link automatically opens up the app, but then the app doesn’t go to the article. Does anyone know how to get around this issue?
josephpmay··on Mark Zuckerberg Sued Native Hawaiians for Their Own Land [video]
Haven't watched this specific video, but from what I've read previously he's suing so that the courts can determine who owns the land so he can fairly pay them. Many people own tiny slices of land that they don't have any practical use for (because of how Hawaiian land gets passed down through generations), and Mark owns the vast majority of the island, so he's trying to fairly compensate the remaining land owners.

Also, he apparently dropped the lawsuit after the uproar.

josephpmay··on Millennials to Small Cities: Ready or Not, Here We Come
Did you read the article? Pretty sure the vast majority of people living in Columbus, IN are in single-family homes.
josephpmay··on The 'Manhattan of the Desert': Shibam, Yemen's Ancient Skyscraper City (2015)
The idea that the entire building isn't built directly on the street/sidewalk. For example, many cities have rules that the first few floors can be built to the lot line, but then anything taller needs to be "set back" a number of feet. In theory, this should allow for more light to reach the street, but it often results in buildings that look like wedding cakes and waste a huge amount of space.

josephpmay··on Why Snapchat Spectacles failed

josephpmay··on Nigeria has become the seventh country to adopt what3words for mail deliveries
I’ve never thought about this, but what3words could be hugely helpful for me. My house is essentially located between two streets, and the street name in the address isn’t the actual street where my mailbox is or where you’d enter the gate, so loosing packages is common and it’s hard to explain to friends how to find me
josephpmay··on Why Snapchat Spectacles failed
I'm a senior in college now. This was something I worked on from the beginning of high school until this May.
josephpmay··on Why Snapchat Spectacles failed
I read Daemon in middle school and became so obsessed with augmented reality that I essentially devoted the next seven years of my life to working towards making it happen: attending conferences, conducting research, and starting an AR hardware company.

So no, you're not the only one :)

Also, unrelated to my previous obsession with AR, I have prosopagnosia, so having glasses that could tell me who I'm looking at would make a major improvement to my life.

There's an add-injection infection going around today. A lot of sites are getting this.
josephpmay··on MongoDB shares jump more than 30% in $192M IPO
Well, the founders’ shares are usually locked up for months after the IPO, right? More like the VC investors and company missed out on some of their money (which is less than 30% for a 30% rise)
josephpmay··on Facebook acquires anonymous teen compliment app tbh, will let it run

josephpmay··on It’s not ok for billion-dollar companies to crowdfund
It’s part marketing campaign, part pre-sales to prove demand with an easy out if nobody wants to buy it. There’s nothing wrong or unethical about it IMO

josephpmay··on Ask HN: Potentially Moving to SF / SV with a Family
It's definitely possible to live a middle-class lifestyle with a $150k/year salary in SV, although you'll likely have to give up some comforts you may be used to (and also remember taxes are much higher in CA). Would your wife consider working once you move? $180-200k of household income is much more livable.

The biggest thing you might want to consider that you may not be thinking about is the lifestyle difference. The weather is mild year-long here, which means not having to deal with Ohio winters. If you like outdoorsey stuff, hiking/camping/etc are huge here, and it's a day's drive to ski resorts. You'll need to own a car here, but depending on where you live you may be able to take public transport to work, and towns are very biking-accessible.
