josephpmay··on Dulles Airport Surprises Passengers with Facial-Recognition Boarding
The technology is really just being piloted here in a low-risk application.

Everyone commenting here is right that it really doesn’t save that much time when boarding a plane, but think of where else it could save time.

(I probably shouldn’t go into details even though I never signed an NDA, so I guess I technically could talk about it)

josephpmay··on Startup Wants to Replace Cars and Subways with Elevated Pods
It is a political problem... BUT

Subways are expensive to build, and expensive to maintain. If a technological solution makes implementing public transportation cheaper, I think that's a good thing

Edit: Also, Subways work well in dense city areas, but are less efficient is places like LA (outside of downtown) that are very spread out

I hate to be that guy, but did you read the article? It had nothing to do with the rituals of meals and was about lab-grown animal products
josephpmay··on Ask HN: How true is it that most founders are taking drugs like Modafanil?
I think there's an important point to make (although I don't have empirical evidence of this), that ADHD is way more prevalent in startup founders than the general population. This is logical when you consider that those with ADHD are less likely to be fulfilled by a desk job and are more likely to be risk taking.

In general I've found that unmedicated ADHD founders seem more common than medicated, but I wouldn't count on that as generalizable or fact.

In terms of people without ADHD using Modafanil or amphetamines to get an edge, I'm sure that happens a lot, but it's less common than Wall Street or high-powered law firms.

Funnily enough, I just started taking Modafanil this week.

josephpmay··on Leap Motion designed a $100 augmented reality headset with hand tracking
No. The idea is that UX designers can use this to prototype for future AR headsets
josephpmay··on Leap Motion designed a $100 augmented reality headset with hand tracking
They made some really interesting design choices that prioritize optical quality over every other factor (ergonomics, look, etc.). Really interesting approach to create a device that’s esentially only for UX prototyping. Cudos to the Leap Morion team!
josephpmay··on Ask HN: Is Meteor.js dead?
I built a major project in Meteor last summer, and it was a big mistake. For the most part, Meteor itself is stable and being actively developed, but many of the packages are experiencing severe rot, and one of the developers of a few of the most used meteor packages recently went out of business and took all their documentation down with them.

josephpmay··on Millennials Moving to Suburbs Will Change Economic Development
OR millennials are moving to the exurbs not because they want to, but because cities are too expensive when you have a family and don’t want roommates. Much of the rest of the world is happy to raise families in cities... why not here? The solution should be to build infrastructure and improve the schools in urban cores, not invest in suburbs.

josephpmay··on What happens when you put evolution on replay?
I completely agree. I think this is an excellent way to study evolution. I just don’t see anything particularly novel in the research (not saying it’s not deserving to be studied or published- But I don’t get why it was presented the way it was in the article other than drumming up publicity)
josephpmay··on What happens when you put evolution on replay?
I feel like this article is pretty misleading in terms of the context and significance of the research. Inserting ancestral genes in extant organisms is a well-accepted approach to studying evolution. Evolution happens because of environmental pressure and random luck (mutations). There's no deterministic factor of evolution, and it's weird that the article tries to present it that way.

josephpmay··on Nanopore MinION – $1k solid-state DNA sequencers
There is a good reply to you that is currently dead for some reason, so I’m reposting it here for people who don’t have dead visible:

> You're buying a service for the 500-800$. Here you're buying a flowcell for 1000$ (the "sequencer" is more or less free). The technology is pretty different and a lot more bleeding edge. If what you want is just a genome aligned to a known reference and you can wait a few days then this is not what you want. We use ONT's minION for strange niche stuff, where either the DNA prep method matters or the latency (the time from loading to the first data out of the machine) matters. Read quality is typically not as good as illumina, so for applications where we need quality we stick with the NextSeq. There's no reason to think nanopore technology won't get better though, but for now, if you've got the money illumina is still the way to go most of the time. >
