joseakle··on I am nothing
...And it starts with nothing. ...

I disagree, it starts with love.

What is good?

Having zero expectations and being humble are both noble. But being nothing is just impossible. You already are something. Goodness comes from love, Integrity comes from knowing what is good, so don't be evil, be good.

What is true?

I guess the point being made is that knowledge of the truth starts with knowing i am ignorant, like the beginner's mind, or a childlike curiosity, free of prejudices, a free mind, or to paraphrase Plato "— This man, on one hand, believes that he knows something, while not knowing [anything]. On the other hand, I - equally ignorant - do not believe [that I know anything]." [1]

I haven´t read that book, looks interesting.

On the topic of moderation I would suggest the ability to somewhat "follow" good commenters, and even perhaps block bad submitters. This way, reputation is not only karma, but quality of followers.

joseakle··on Unhosted - Freedom from web 2.0's monopoly platforms
Well, i´ll tell you as a SaaS provider to small bussinesses and web software provider to large enterprises. The main reason we sell to large enterprises an on premise solution is because they basically don´t trust us or our platform providers (aws, appengine) with their info. Just look at github firewall install and other on premise solutions, they are available because of a fundamental and justified lack of trust on third parties. Good luck on the civil liberties (rights) angle, i believe it´s not such a utopian but more of a practical concern who you trust your info to.
joseakle··on Unhosted - Freedom from web 2.0's monopoly platforms
I believe this is very interesting, even perhaps the way of the future for SaaS business apps.

Consumers and small businesses are more easy going about having their info hosted elsewhere. But medium to large businesses, maybe because of the competitive nature of the activity and the huge amount of resources at their disposal, are more wary of having their data stored where it's "out of their control".

Although many businesses have adopted "the cloud" for certain activities i believe most computation is still done in-house, even if there are some disadvantages to it. A platform that enables them to keep the information to themselves while taking advantage of better infrastructure providers would certainly accelerate the adoption of "cloud" technologies for new applications.

There still remains the problem of legacy systems, which through virtualization will be more easily transported to a "cloud" provider.

So let's see what happens, good luck on your enadeavor.

Trefis thinks the stock is worth 361 [1][3], market price is 288 [2], the article says it reached 292, Trefis community average is at 410 [1].

There are 913.56M shares outstanding. Putting it's valuation at 263B. [2]

Which is around Microsoft+Adobe+Nokia or Intel+Google or IBM+HP

I´d short it if i knew how, i love mac, but this is just unsustainable.

I don't know if you remember Telmex (the telephone company that "was given away"/"was bought very cheaply"), but it sucked, the lines were down all the time, service was really slow, you could be left without a phone line for more than a couple of days. That doesn't happen anymore.

He transformed that company (albeit being a monopoly) into a fairly good one. With the excess cash he generated he launched a mobile phone company that is one of the world's largest, and invested in numerous other businesses transforming them from badly performing ones into better businesses.

He was certainly lucky, smart and well connected when he bought Telmex, but all the execution afterwards was not easily handed to him.

Personally i'd love if his companies ran the water distribution or trash collection, he'd probably turn them into better performing and less corrupt businesses.

I think everybody expects so much of him, but he doesn't care, he is wired for making money and an excellent example of a pragmatic businessman. Compare him with the Russian oligarchs and you'll see how bad it could be. I really think he is a good and well meaning man.

joseakle··on Ask HN: Should we give incentives ?
Great! I watched it.

So now i'm really thinking if we should have financial incentives ...

The thing is most articles that say incentives don't work area about pay for performance, but the problem is if performance is not measured in money it's kind of hard to compare.

joseakle··on Impressive - list of sites already running on Stack Exchange
Yeah, i took a look at 3 of them and questions seem to have very few views and answers, but i guess it will evolve somehow.

Yahoo Answers and Vark.com don't always get the answer i need, for dev related questions stackoverflow does it a lot better, integration with niche websites might be a good idea, such as automotive portals.

Also don't underestimate localization, facebook really took off in mexico and spain once there was a spanish version.

When i click a link I would love to see a digg style frame or bar on top (for voting) and another one at the bottom with the comments (for reading and commenting). And the website in the middle. This way you can prevent going back and forth or trying to vote on a story and seeing the noprocrast page because you left the tab open for too long.
