jonstaab··on Nostr (“Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays”) – An Introduction
https://coracle.social is the client I work on. It's less well-known, but is pretty feature-complete.
jonstaab··on Nostr (“Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays”) – An Introduction
https://coracle.social (my web client) implements relay discovery as well.

jonstaab··on Lab-Grown Meat Is Safe to Eat, FDA Says
There's also this:

"Flavour enhancers [developed using] aborted fetal tissue are being eaten without the knowledge of consumers. Amounts of these flavour enhancers used in food products are below a certain threshold, so they don't need to be reported or safety-tested by the FDA."

This technology is being used to develop plant-based meats. Plus, look at the ingredients used, way too much soy, and lots of other suspicious things.

jonstaab··on Nostr is a stupid simple P2P protocol that works, built by builders
Bitcoin is carbon-negative believe it or not. Not that CO2 emissions are a meaningful measure of environmental stewardship.
jonstaab··on Nostr is a stupid simple P2P protocol that works, built by builders
Scale is hard, but for small-to-medium sized clusters, you can use your own node, or a friends'. Now you have your own copy of the data, and control over latency. The key insight with nostr is the multi-master architecture.

Relays can censor as much as they want, since they're only stewrding a small part of the network, likely replicated elsewhere. As to building in ways to curate/moderate content in a distributed way, there are lots of ideas out there as to how that might happen. Here's an issue I opened just the other day: https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/issues/75

If you don't understand why bitcoin matters, educate yourself NOW.
jonstaab··on Soft deletion probably isn't worth it
If you implement soft delete, you should surface it to your user. That's who is accidentally deleting things, and that's who will want to un-delete them. As for side effects like spinning up/down servers, build that into your data model (of course, in a case like Heroku's that can be prohibitively expensive, so don't).

Source: I write back of house software for resale store owners, and accidental deletes happen occasionally. Being able to restore things instills a lot of confidence for our customers.

Deadlock is the point, less is more, worse is better.
jonstaab··on Show HN: Umbrel – A personal server OS for self-hosting
I run one, it's quite easy and reasonably cheap. I admit the main value prop is feeling smug about your opsec, but the self-sovereignty thesis and culture of bitcoin are genuinely important. A small minority of people (nerds) running their own nodes is a way to keep the wider network more honest and help regular people benefit from using it.
jonstaab··on Hexwords: Hex colors that are similar to words
This is the kind of thing HN is for. That's not to say it's not also great at incubating overly-pedantic technocratic bikeshedding of computing minutiae, which has its place. Don't ever change, HN.
jonstaab··on Show HN: Umbrel – A personal server OS for self-hosting
It's accessible by tor because it's primarily a bitcoin/lightning node. If you're not interested in that core value prop, umbrel isn't for you.
jonstaab··on Senators want to mandate anti-piracy technology across the web
This is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard, from a competition standpoint, from a censorship standpoint, from an innovation standpoint, just... oof.
jonstaab··on But life had other plans
This is correct with the additional caveat that the pill also thins the uterine lining, making it difficult for the embryo to implant in the rare event of fertilization. So for people concerned about avoiding an abortion, the pill rarely, but not never, results in abortion.
jonstaab··on Twitter expands downvote test worldwide
Comment/like ratios are a great way to handle this already. It makes up/downvote incentive asymmetric, which makes getting ratio'd high signal.
jonstaab··on Show HN: Social network that looks and works more like a forum
Can I run my own node? If not, then I don't care (although a forum interface would I think be vastly superior to the usual news feed interface).

Edit: this is not meant to be dismissive, it's just that the main problem with social media right now is centralization. I'm simply not interested in jumping from one centralized option to another.

jonstaab··on Heroku Is Currently Down
Yes, but I think it's elastic compute that's down, which hosts a lot of AWS and Heroku's own infrastructure, hence the large blast radius.

Broaden your historical context, and Keynes becomes the junior developer who thinks he can elegantly fix everything.
jonstaab··on 100 years of whatever this will be
Great essay, but I think fundamentally wrong.

There are some important distributed systems he overlooks: the ones found in nature. Gas Laws, photosynthesis, and radiant energy are pretty great, it means I always have air to breathe. No one is regulating that, and to do so would only make things much worse.

The challenge is that humans suck at designing distributed systems. Nature is exquisitely designed (or, if you want, evolved). The solution then, is to root ourselves in nature rather than desperately, constantly trying to replace it. Bitcoin is the only new tech I can think of that does this (not sure if that's the 'most obvious horrifically misguided recently-popular "decentralized" system' the author refers to). Everything else: farming subsidies, AI, Keynesian economics, plastic surgery, vaccines, desk jobs — are all hopelessly out of touch with reality.

That's not to say technology is Bad, but it needs to be real, not manufactured.

UBI isn't communist, it's socialist — but it's a step in the wrong direction. Meanwhile, the FedAccount proposal[0] (for example) is both communist and authoritarian.
