jon6··on Linguist claims that English Is a Scandinavian language
This is the most useless academic 'discovery' I've ever seen. Am I wrong?
jon6··on Doom 3 BFG Edition source code released
How is the engine for BFG different from the older Doom3 version?
jon6··on The Circle of Fifths, Part One
I vaguely remember using this knowledge of the scales to "cheat" on the violin. If you move your hand into whatever position puts your first finger on the first note in the scale then you can always move the rest of the fingers in exactly the same manner - whole whole half, whole whole whole half. My music theory knowledge is crumbling but what I mean is if you move into 2nd position on the A string to play a B scale its much easier than starting in 1st position with the 2nd finger.

I did this at a competition once when given some insane scales (like 3 flats in the clef) without having ever practiced the scale itself and got it right.

jon6··on PPA for Netflix Desktop App
I tried it on my kubuntu i386 netbook earlier today. The ppa installed ok and when I ran 'netflix-desktop' for the first time the wine installer downloaded and installed mono, then proceeded to install firefox. I noticed some errors but didn't look at them very carefuly.

I ran 'netflix-desktop' again and it said 'firefox.exe not found' at which point I gave up.

jon6··on WebSockets and WebGL used to create multiplayer shoot'em up
Is there a youtube video?

I found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDGl-eDEuNQ but I'm not sure if its the same game.

jon6··on The Nature of Lisp
They are not homoiconic. The underlying datastructure for many schemes, and racket, is not a list. It is a syntax object. Of course you can still do metaprogramming with syntax objects but I wouldn't call it the same thing.
jon6··on The Nature of Lisp
You can still do anaphoric macros with hygienic macros.

jon6··on The Nature of Lisp
Its disingenuous to call scheme and racket lisps. They have parenthesis and first class functions but the similarities stop there.

So yes I equate Lisp with common lisp. I didn't read the entire article (far too long) but he does mention 'defmacro' which is in Common Lisp.

jon6··on The Nature of Lisp
To understand Lisp is to understand interpreters. With that understanding you can create domain specific languages which is extremely powerful.

But I wouldn't recommend using Lisp itself.. macros in particular are unhygienic.

jon6··on Kickstarter's new team page
hipster.. overload..
jon6··on The Sorry State of C++ Portability
The major issue he has seems to be that visual studio is much easier to use than the command line + makefiles. Ok that may be but if you are porting to linux then you probably are already familiar with the command line and makefiles. Supporting gcc on windows from a makefile that you already need on linux is not super hard.

But in any case I find visual studio a horrendous piece of garbage.

jon6··on The State of JavaScript - Brendan Eich
Also Nacl supports threads while emscripten does not. For a large set of applications (including my own games) this is a deal breaker to using emscripten.
jon6··on Advanced Linux Programming
Beej's networking guide is pretty good

jon6··on Mysterious Algorithm Was 4% of Trading Activity Last Week
I suppose bitcoin could be used as the technical solution. Maybe receivers of money can white-list certain senders so they don't have to pay anything to send to them. Then only spammers and unknown people would have to pay.
jon6··on TypeScript: a language for application-scale JavaScript development
Clearly you can't perceive sarcasm.
jon6··on TypeScript: a language for application-scale JavaScript development

    $ t
    command not found
clearly they could have named the compiler just 't' instead of the overly verbose 'tsc'. all those extra characters!!
jon6··on Iran designing its own version of the Internet
I'm not a network engineer but is this all that difficult to do? I imagine if you control the AS (autonomous system) then you can control all routes into and out of the country, so they can easily block anything out of the country unless it comes from some known IP (like the computers of the elite class).
jon6··on The hidden cost of C++ (2009)
I don't necessarily disagree with this assessment but you can easily create functionality in C that requires looking at multiple source files to understand whats going on.

    x = foo(bar(), baz());
Now you have to look at the definitions for bar and baz to understand the cost of this line.

I guess this is the trade-off with using a high level language. Expressivity vs transparency.

jon6··on Sh.py
I spent a few minutes trying to figure out how to install the thing so for anyone that is equally as lost

    $ pip install sh
or goto the github page https://github.com/amoffat/sh
jon6··on Avoiding game crashes related to linked lists
I agree, although I have never had a performance bottleneck related to std::list that required a move to std::vector. Do you know at what point std::set becomes more optimal (in some dimension) than std::vector?
jon6··on $165 Billion: Food Thrown Away By Americans Every Year
165 billion divided by the population (311 million) divided by 365 days is about $1.45.

    irb(main):007:0> 165e9 / 311e6 / 365.0
    => 1.45355239395675
Which thankfully also is consistent with the other number mentioned in the article, $2275 for a family of 4 per year.

    irb(main):005:0> 2275.0 / 4 / 365
    => 1.55821917808219
Doesn't seem like a lot can be done about such a small amount of waste per day..
jon6··on GIMP is Now a Self-Contained Native App for Mac OS X
OT but is this an official signed application that can work with gatekeeper on 10.8? I recently discovered that my open source project won't work by default on osx 10.8 without me paying $99 to get an apple certificate, which I'm not very interested in doing.

What are open source/free projects supposed to do about gatekeeper?

jon6··on How would you improve Hacker News?
Stories should be able to be tagged using an arbitrary set of tags similar to stack overflow. Possibly only people with a certain karma should be able to tag stories. Then let people filter stories by the tags it has. This would alleviate the concern of "too many YC posts" because they can be all tagged 'YC' and I can filter those out.
jon6··on Rob Pike: The Best Programming Advice I Ever Got.
You are only so smart. Once the complexity of the programming model reaches a certain point a debugger is necessary to validate and discover the true nature of a system. Often that point is quite low.
jon6··on Some performance tweaks
Seeing a pull request like this might be fun once in a while but it gets old very quickly when you deal with it somewhat frequently.
jon6··on Mars Curiosity's first images
What are those pictures of? This one

http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl-raw-images/workspace/apss/ORT-1...

Looks like a building with a garage door on it and some random pipes sticking out.

jon6··on Computational Types in C# and F#
Using reflection to "find" the computation from some input types to output types seems a bit naive in the face of real world problems. It seems likely to me that most types can be combined in a myriad of ways that can't be found automatically.

Also this article seemed like a long winded way of saying 'make up types for your own data'. Don't just pass around void*! Well thanks for the tip.

jon6··on Investing in GitHub
"Why? Because we want to be better."

This is the least transparent reasoning I've seen in a long time.

jon6··on [dead]
I remember being amazed that impulse tracker was written in assembly.

jon6··on Attack the Block’s Joe Cornish To Direct Cyberpunk Classic Snow Crash
Ok, I'll bite. No I have not read any other cyberpunk books, but necromancer was recommended to me. Anyway (unlike the implication from ynniv) I had no problem with the metaverse. Here are the issues I can think of at the moment

1. no character development

2. "hiro protagonist" 10/10 on the lame scale

3. no explanation for why delivering pizzas is so important. there is one paragraph that attempts to explain it but fails miserably.

4. the girl only serves as a plot vehicle and does so incredibly poorly

5. hiro's dad and raven's dad were captured together? absurd

6. love of the rat thing for the girl is disney-level goofy

7. the "magic spell" juanita reads at the end is a little too convenient

I did like the fighting scenes, though. There was one very good paragraph in the whole book -- the bit about how computers never seem to do the right thing and to get any modicum of productivity out of them the tools one uses must be transparent, meaning the user must have a deep understanding of their tools. That is a pretty deep insight that can be incorporated into daily life.
