jollofricepeas··on Twilio confirms data breach after hackers leak 33M Authy user phone numbers
This works.

I started doing this as well.

I mimic the Jolly Roger call service and they usually hang up in less than a minute.

Ex…

- Act like you can’t hear them

- Ask them to restart what they were saying

- Start a conversation with a fictional person in the background

It’s fun and makes getting spam calls enjoyable.

jollofricepeas··on Quarter of mental health cases linked to cannabis (in one medical ward)
Your point of view doesn’t negate that:

“Cannabis is a common psychosis trigger to those with an existing disposition (even if they don’t know it yet).”

Some press is conservative and some press is liberal. It’s been like this since the beginning of journalism.

Read both.

jollofricepeas··on Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters orders Bible taught in schools
To expand that..

Should we trust state governments to choose the best laws for their citizens?

jollofricepeas··on Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters orders Bible taught in schools
Good point.

Seems like a good place to start to answer…

“How did genocide and murder in the Bible influence government and church sanctioned violence in the so called New World?”

jollofricepeas··on Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters orders Bible taught in schools
Ban all books!

We cannot trust teachers to objectively teach with the right historical, political and social context.

Ban all books!

jollofricepeas··on Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters orders Bible taught in schools
To be fair.

They said teach the Bible NOT Christianity.

We should most definitely teach the Bible in its historical context starting with:

- the genocide of indigenous peoples particularly the California Genocide from 1846-1873

- slavery and corporate interests (160?-1865)

- manifest destiny

- lynching in a Christian country (1860-1950)

- the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

- civil rights movement (1950-1968)

- the Catholic Church sex abuse scandals

- Christian Zionism, corporate interests and apartheid in the Middle East

jollofricepeas··on Microsoft breached antitrust rules by bundling Teams and Office, EU says
Nah.

My best guess is that the pandemic is what happened — if this story is true.

The bundling didn’t matter when no one needed a large amount of seats for an in-office workforce.

But during COVID and currently, there was no better pricing than what Microsoft is offering for all the things (ex. Azure + 0365 + GitHub).

The market shifted from Slack, Zoom and <insert anything else here> to Teams for large enterprises when they recognized that no one was coming back into the office.

jollofricepeas··on Allan McDonald refused to approve Challenger launch, exposed cover-up (2021)
It’s a shame.

We don’t see software engineers behave ethically in the same way.

Software is filled with so much risk taking and there’s few if any public pushback where engineers are saying the software we’ve created is harmful.

Here’s a few examples:

- Dark patterns in retail

- Cybersecurity flaws in sensitive software (ie. Microsoft)

- Social media and mental health

- Social media and child exploitation / sex trafficking

- Social media and political murder (ie. Riots, assassinations)

This stuff is happening and it’s just shrugs all-around in the tech industry.

I have a ton of respect for those whistleblowers in AI who seem to be the small exception to this rule.

jollofricepeas··on Now is a good time to start a service business
In many cases, many of the things you mentioned are specialized by industry which is where there’s opportunity for you.

Take a look at Constellation Softwares verticals. They specialize in acquiring tiny software companies.

https://www.csisoftware.com/our-companies

On the other hand, OnlineOrNot is a good example of a solo founder building a solution in an already crowded space.

jollofricepeas··on Now is a good time to start a service business
Any B2B vertical where customer ACV is less than $10k per year.

If the vertical has affiliated trade organizations when you go to their events, you’ll find either very few VC-backed startups or none at all.

The competition will be mainly service businesses without software chops. Sell cheap automation and price sensitive customers will move to your solution.

jollofricepeas··on Now is a good time to start a service business
I disagree in part.

It really comes down to your own temperament.

I think micro SaaS solutions for small tiny verticals that are neglected by VC backed firms are the better option.

- They scale better

- Less competition

- Customer service is less of a headache with a physical product or SaaS

- Easier to exit

jollofricepeas··on Wild new study suggests gravity can exist without mass
This is a really poor reply.

It doesn’t answer my question of whether the exercise will be embraced or just outright ignored by the scientific community.

jollofricepeas··on Wild new study suggests gravity can exist without mass
This seems to be a big step forward. It’ll be interesting to see where the science community goes from here.

Will they embrace this research and dig into it further?

Or ignore it completely?

jollofricepeas··on Ask HN: Machine learning engineers, what do you do at work?
So…

Is it surprising that Engineers in healthcare dont read the actual HIPAA documentation?

Use of health data is permitted so long as it’s for payment, treatment or operations. Disclosures and patient consent are not required.

There are helpful summaries on the US Department of Health and Humans Services website of the various rules (Security, Privacy & Notification)

Source: https://www.hhs.gov/hipaa/for-professionals/privacy/guidance...

This allowance is permitted to covered entities and by extension their vendors (business associates) by HIPAA.

If it wasn’t then, theoretically the US healthcare industry would grind to a halt considering the number of intermediaries for a single transaction.

Example:

Doctor writes script -> EHR -> Pharmacy -> Switch -> Clearinghouse —> PA Processing -> PBM/Plan makes determination

Along this flow there are other possible branches and vendors.

It’s beyond complex.

jollofricepeas··on Almost 30% of Americans Say College Not Worth It in Pew Poll
College is not worth it.

But public high schools are a joke.

We have failed the poor and working class especially young men of all backgrounds.

At one point, you could graduate high school OR even not graduate and get a good job that let you buy a car and move out of your parents house.

Within a few years you could save up and buy a starter home for a family.

Until there’s meaningful reinvestment into public school education that helps young men obtain the skills to become gainfully employed at 18 years of age as an apprentice or junior anything in a meaningful career then we’ll continue to have problems with wealth inequality, crime, drug use and apathy.

jollofricepeas··on How Jim Simons Revolutionised Investing
Renaissance is well-known for being an early, big consumer of alternative data (ie. satellite, consumer, social) to find their edge but at the point that it runs out — you either begin trading inside information or regress.

Unless you’re HUGE in size, you can’t over perform for long without establishing insular networks of insider trading.

jollofricepeas··on Steve Wozniak: When I die these are the moments I want to remember
I don’t know.

I had a similar perspective on gratitude when I was broke. I wasnt unhappy necessarily.

But when I became “rich” things definitely changed and I don’t even have Woz money.

Being “rich” helps in that you don’t worry about money anymore at least not in the way you did before…

But as Larry David said as soon as “making money” disappears as a worry than something else tends to take its place in your head. A good example would be “losing money” or “trusting others.”

The biggest goal should be becoming debt-free and avoiding consumerism. If you can do this you can reduce money as a worry and focus on gratitude as Woz says.

It can be hard to be happy and find direction when you’re broke.

jollofricepeas··on VCs aren’t your friends
Also…

“Smart” and “brilliant” are all highly subjective.

Pride and ego lead to an amazing amount of bias when you start to think you know “smart” when you see it.

There are no “tests” for legacy admissions and for students whose parents have donated millions.

jollofricepeas··on 23% of bachelor's degrees and 43% of master's degrees have a negative ROI
Underrated comment and great advice.

If all your friends and acquaintances look like you and don’t have differing perspectives, then you should totally widen your social circle.

Speak less, learn more. Ask questions.

Break out of the loop. Say no to the algorithm.

jollofricepeas··on U.S. Rules Apple Illegally Interrogated Staff and Confiscated Union Flyers
I don’t understand how so many HNers are anti-union and anti-collective bargaining.

The fact that corporations and billionaires are so anti-union and engage in regular conduct like this demonstrates that unions are pro-worker and ideal for the balance needed in the US and across the globe.

Balance is key between workers and owners. Without it we are left with growing wealth inequality such as…

- ridiculous housing prices

- stagnant wages

- poor public school education

- no retirement benefits

- expensive public universities

jollofricepeas··on Ask HN: What nonfiction books do you keep rereading?
Lessons of History by Will and Ariel Durant.

jollofricepeas··on 2024 Verizon Data Breach Investigation Report [pdf]
The DBIR is an interesting dataset in that it only covers breaches that have been covered by the media.

It does not include the vast majority of breaches that happen every year and are reported to federal and state regulatory bodies or as posted to cybercrime / ransomware sites.

One of the coolest things is that this process though flawed is transparent and semi-open to the public.

The dataset and the underlying process for which events are selected takes place in the open on GitHub.

Kudos to their commitment to open source.

jollofricepeas··on Pete Ballmer: what its like to grow up as Steve Ballmers son
Interesting.

You can buy your way to success in most professions.

The beauty of picking comedy is that whatever success he is able to develop will truly be his own.

Knowing you’ll never have to worry about money due to inheritance is freeing.

But, the weight of knowing whether he got his PM job in software because (that’s Ballmers kid) must have been heavy.

jollofricepeas··on A former slave who became a cowboy, a rancher, and a Texas legend

Was Daniel Webster Wallace not a real person?

Was he not a former slave turned successful cowboy/rancher?

jollofricepeas··on A former slave who became a cowboy, a rancher, and a Texas legend
Very cool. It’s great that we’re starting to learn more about US history. There’s so many untold stories that need to be told.
jollofricepeas··on Union households tend to have $100k more in wealth than nonunion families
This is basic economics.

The rise of income and wealth inequality is directly tied to the weakening of collective bargaining, corporate consolidation and globalization.

Unionized workers are the only real backstop against corporate interests.

jollofricepeas··on UnitedHealth Group has paid more than $2B to providers following cyberattack

These are the payments owed by plans.
