jokoon··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
reddit is being less and less trustworthy and interesting, the constant opinion bubbles make it impossible to have a thoughtful conversation anywhere.
jokoon··on Using any C++ library in Godot
So it requires writing a CMake script, some python, and some weird C++ code.

A bit tedious but that's how it goes.

jokoon··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
I don't understand how an LLM is able to reason about those things

LLM use language, but it can't "think" about biochemistry

I saw that LLM have reasoning capabilities, which is different from machine learning, but I don't understand how it works.

jokoon··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
I mean, even if android is/was open source, it was always fastidious to build a de-googled android image for a phone model.

Of course it's not great for their business model. Not to mention, no more trustworthy app distribution.

I don't see the EU really being able to forcing them to de-google android phones.

I am also curious how much those phones would cost, BTW, since the cost calculation to release such an OS would be a bit complicated.

jokoon··on Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs
As long as you have critical thinking, it's fine.

So I would say it accentuates the gap between good developers and bad ones.

A sharp sense for logic and causality etc is what differentiates.

jokoon··on I spent $220 on Google app ads and 60% of the installs were robots
I'll never get over game dev people arguing that I should spend half my budget on marketing, which they mean ads.

The internet has so much fraud, bad actors and toxicity, yet it makes so much money.

jokoon··on A 12TB Steam “teraleak” spills more than a decade of lost PC gaming history
hey, no threats, please
jokoon··on Actively exploited sandbox RCE in all Chromium versions
I prefer firefox, but doesn't firefox have a history of more similar exploits?
jokoon··on Paint.net 5.2 alpha now runs on Linux
That was the last software that held me to windows

I hope plugin makers are going to port them too

jokoon··on A 12TB Steam “teraleak” spills more than a decade of lost PC gaming history
Sorry what's the link between valve and kremlin?
jokoon··on “It works better in the app”
the problem is that HTML is so bloated nowadays, that medium phones cannot deal with it, so apps always have better performance
jokoon··on France's tax agency got hacked (in French)
I want to believe this will reveal people who do tax fraud or potentially illegal tax dodging schemes

It's probably the quickest way to punish those people, just regular data leaks from the tax bureau.

I'm probably too optimistic, since this data is probably not admissible in court.

jokoon··on Turn satellite imagery into a paper globe you fold yourself
win10, firefox

freezing for no reason

jokoon··on SQLite Critical CVEs or LLM Slop?
could this be used to create some panic and make some money through trading or something?

no idea who submitted all of those, but it sounds like malicious intent

jokoon··on A missing underscore sent innocent man to prison for 18 months
How could they manage to forget that underscore if that's their only evidence?
jokoon··on VLC for Unity now supported on Linux
I don't know why, but on windows, the first time I start VLC after a windows boot, it takes about 5s to 8s to open a video file, any sort of video file

I suspect it's a graphics driver issue, or something else

jokoon··on Learn OpenGL, extensive tutorial resource for learning Modern OpenGL
I fear that in the future, opengl will be made obsolete and GPU vendors will stop supplying drivers for it, because it won't be worth it for them. Of course there are layers to be put on top of vulkan, but I don't know if they're reliable enough and can support 100% of opengl.

I would say that's one thing that the "stop killing games" movement would not see coming. I am not expert enough in graphics programming.

I am wary because lately, I realized I could not run blender 4.5 on a thinkpad from 2014, on windows, I had to use a 3.x version because that thinkpad has a chipset.

Generally in software, making things work for a long time doesn't generate profits, and it feels like opengl is getting a bit old already. I hope it won't happen and people can contradict me here.

jokoon··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
got banned on my EU country subreddit for saying hamas dresses as civilians

reddit is probably the worst echo chamber of the internet

jokoon··on Blender 5.2 LTS
Blender is certainly a great software, but there are still remains of bad UI choices, for example how zooming works

https://blender.stackexchange.com/questions/644/why-does-the...

They improved the UI already, but maybe they could improve it a little bit more. And this is not the only frustration, I constantly have to ask around for little things like that.

Also important to know, but late blender versions don't support old GPU, which is a bit sad: I can't use late blender version on my old thinkpad which only has a graphics chipset.

jokoon··on Godot will no longer accept AI-authored code contributions
Care to give arguments?
jokoon··on Israel targeted Gaza children resulting in genocide, UN inquiry says
Does Israel has the intent of genocide? I don't think so.

Does Hamas try to maximize civilian casualties with martyrdom? By meshing its combattants with civilians? Yes.

The Geneva convention, unfortunately, allows collateral to a certain extent.

Hamas also executed gazans several times.

Israel does have a very aggressive strategy, but labeling it a genocide doesn't help the Palestinian cause.

Words matter.

jokoon··on Steam Machine launches today
I read many people saying "it's just a PC", but I am a bit skeptical for now.

I will probably wait for reviews to see how it goes

I still feel very interested, though, but I would need to adapt some workflows that I have with paint.net for now

jokoon··on Steam Machine launches today
so the available software is a bit limited then

I can still customize and configure things, or not really?

does that mean I can't customize the OS, like shortcuts?

jokoon··on Steam Machine launches today
So SteamOS is just arch linux?

I guess there are important differences?

jokoon··on Superintelligence: The Idea That Eats Smart People (2016)
This is just wishful thinking

We don't have a good definition of intelligence

Also, the premise that this thing would take over, it's hard to reason why it would do so

Anthropocentrism is also problematic in this article.

jokoon··on Windows quality update: Progress we've made since March
I did not say everyone is a gamer, but it's still a big market share
jokoon··on Windows quality update: Progress we've made since March
valve is on the brink of replacing windows with steam for many people

it's probably not a big dent in market share, but it's probably a good tipping point

jokoon··on Saying goodbye to Agile
Feels like another bad idea from management born in the silicon valley
jokoon··on Has electricity decoupled from natural gas prices in Germany?
Thanks nuclear for subsidizing renewables
jokoon··on DRAM pricing is killing the hobbyist SBC market
it's probably time to call those old retired programmers to ask them how to reduce software memory footprint

or to teach that again
