jokoon··on DRAM pricing is killing the hobbyist SBC market
it's probably time to call those old retired programmers to ask them how to reduce software memory footprint

or to teach that again

jokoon··on If you don't opt out by Apr 24 GitHub will train on your private repos
weren't they already using repos for training?
jokoon··on Video Encoding and Decoding with Vulkan Compute Shaders in FFmpeg
I once asked on #ffmpeg@libera if the GPU could be used to encode h264, and apparently yes, but it's not really worth it compared to CPU.

I don't know much about video compression, does that mean that a codec like h264 is not parallelizable?

jokoon··on 3M's PFAS exit killed the supply chain for two-phase immersion cooling in DCs
I got a thin raincoat, a thing I can roll and pack in my bag, I have been carrying it around for the last 10 years or so.

I think it was advertised as very water proof, like water would pearl on it.

It's probably full of PFAS, no idea if it has been leeching PFAS, but I know it's not very waterproof anymore, so that might be a worrying clue.

jokoon··on $96 3D-printed rocket that recalculates its mid-air trajectory using a $5 sensor
the obvious goal of that is to help kill those iranian drones
jokoon··on Bourdieu's theory of taste: a grumbling abrégé (2023)
Bourdieu was ahead of his time.

People now identify themselves as belonging to a social class by subtle cues, it's like an unconscious messaging system to signal that you belong to some sort of club.

That's what "being raised right" means now.

It's now backwards to check if someone comes from a good or rich, noble family.

Instead, we check other subtle things.

Spend 5 min with anybody, and you can somehow know if that person can belong to your group of friends.

It's like animal checking each other' scents to accept them in a group.

jokoon··on Bourdieu's theory of taste: a grumbling abrégé (2023)
Foucault was popular in the US, and had theories that were different but similar in concepts
jokoon··on Ask HN: Why there are no actual studies that show AI is more productive?
Funny how much money is invested yet no proof those investments will yield profits

It's all make believe

jokoon··on Tinnitus Is Connected to Sleep
I've heard a scientist say tinnitus also happens after waking up from a nap, not from a night's sleep

Can confirm

jokoon··on The yoghurt delivery women combatting loneliness in Japan
English is not my main language but this title confuses me
jokoon··on Tech employment now significantly worse than the 2008 or 2020 recessions
People constantly tell me "oh you're a dev it's easy to find work"

I'm a c++ dev, with excellent senior tests, but low experience, and no degree in France. 3 years without a job.

I yearn for a new pandemic.

Fortunately, I learned how to live without a job, found other things to do and how to live a life. Welfare is generous, and I have good savings.

Honestly I don't really want to work in software anymore. If there is a job offer and recruiters are calling me, I answer and I accept.

But I'm not applying to all positions I can see and I won't run after them.

jokoon··on Mozilla is working on a big Firefox redesign, here is what it looks like
Somebody finally picked up the login autofill bug, not sure it's production ready
jokoon··on Global warming has accelerated significantly
Nothing will change until developed rich countries are starting to hurt.

And I don't think it's going to hurt enough in 10 or 20 years.

The pain will come slowly, people won't see it.

It's like going back to the middle age so slowly, that the population don't realize or feel it.

And honestly, wars and trump are making climate concerns so difficult to think about.

jokoon··on Judge orders government to begin refunding more than $130B in tariffs
What if this was the plan, so those importers can make money?
jokoon··on We may soon have 70M boomers too old to drive, too car-dependent to stop
More reason to build railways
jokoon··on Wirth's Revenge
Hardware is cheaper than programmers

Maybe one day that will change

jokoon··on Pretty soon, heat pumps will be able to store and distribute heat as needed
I'm interested in storing cold, not heat

Storing cold during the night is probably more efficient

I thought about making ice blocks with a freezer on my balcony, probably not a good idea

jokoon··on GitHub experience various partial-outages/degradations
Feels like acquiring GitHub was another way to hurt open source projects
jokoon··on C++ Modules Are Here to Stay
I am curious to know if that 8.6x speedup is consistent.

I don't see many "fair" benchmarks about this, but I guess it is probably difficult to properly benchmarks module compilation as it can depend on cases.

If modules can reach that sort of speedup consistently, it's obviously great news.

jokoon··on Android’s desktop interface leaks
with win11, it's an opportunity to take the desktop market
jokoon··on TikTok users can't upload anti-ICE videos. The company blames tech issues
it's obvious that tiktok is doing this intentionally, pretending it's a technical issue, so that people can blame the US government for forcing the sale of tiktok

it's just retaliation

and obviously, trump will play into this

jokoon··on Godot 4.6 Release: It's all about your flow
I am curious to see how much the editor have been increasing in executable size after each version
jokoon··on ICE using Palantir tool that feeds on Medicaid data
The source of the problem is the respect of the rule of law and due process

Data collection is not the source of the problem because people give their data willingly

Do you think data collection is a problem in China, or do you think the government and rule of law is the problem?

Companies collecting data is not the true problem. Even when data collection is illegal, a corrupt government that doesn't respect the rule of law doesn't need data collection.

jokoon··on A flawed paper in management science has been cited more than 6k times
It's harder to do social/human science because it's just easier to make mistakes that leads to bias. It's harder to do in maths, physics, biology, medecine, astronomy, etc.

I often say that "hard sciences" have often progressed much more than social/human sciences.

jokoon··on The Uncomfortable Math of Working for Yourself
Unemployment or dislike for authority also forced me to go into this

It's more like an occupation

jokoon··on IPv6 is not insecure because it lacks a NAT
I don't understand, after all this time, why ipv4 still dominates
jokoon··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
you laugh, but bringing people back to reality might require using screens to do it
jokoon··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
Make a social network that is centered around people who live in a 1 kilometer radius

Make them interact and do things, generally they will be less toxic because it will reduce their online disinhibition effect.

Make them have meals, meet, walk at the park, whatever.
