jojobas··on Uber shuts operations in Nigeria and Uganda with immediate effect
A taxi to the airport in Melbourne was >AUD100 from where I am more than 10 years ago. An Uber is ~AUD70 still, past all the subsidies.
jojobas··on Smartphone LED detects hidden cameras with AI
LED clocks, alarm motion sensors, bluetooth speakers and whatever other appliances also get a bit warm. How would you tell a legit device from one with a milliwatt camera?
jojobas··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
I understand the sentiment, but there are limitations. You can't make a wheelchair-accessible treehouse, but that's not an argument against treehouses. Democracy is about letting people do whatever they want, the laws that forbid treehouse cafes aren't particularly democratic.
jojobas··on MS Paint and Photos inivisibly watermark even locally generated output with GUID
You might think you have control over what causes you to think this or that, but that's only an illusion.
jojobas··on AI-Generated GitHub Copilot “Autofix” Allowed Compromise of Snowflake's Jira
>companies are going to have to start realizing that code is not free to review or maintain

What do you mean, we have both Claude and Cursor review our CC PRs. /s

jojobas··on Flock cameras haven't improved Atlanta's crime clearance rates
The "dissidents" are in plain view, you don't need flock to identify them. Track them down, catch some traffic violations to throw the book for - maybe.
jojobas··on US conducted mass spying campaign against leftwing and anti-ICE protesters
Let's also shoot anyone we don't like with poison gas shells, take hostages from our own population and work a few hundred thousands to death for good measure.
jojobas··on US conducted mass spying campaign against leftwing and anti-ICE protesters
Imagine being incensed by use a pejorative term used towards a movement that almost always killed more people in peacetime than even fascists.

Remove outliers like Hitler and Pol Pot and you can drop "almost".

jojobas··on US hires over 2k video gamers as air traffic controllers
It shouldn't really matter. If you have the proclivity to sit on your bum for hours monitoring many parameters at a time and making decisions you're a much better fit to be trained up for ATC than someone picked at random.
jojobas··on US hires over 2k video gamers as air traffic controllers
For anyone contemplating the same, go play paintball for half a day. You don't just get killed every other round like in Arma, the "death" it's somewhat painful, you get out of breath and start valuing any semblance of cover very much (and get killed from and unexpected direction anyway).
jojobas··on Microsoft Responds to Outcry After Quiet Enterprise Install of Beta 'Photos' App
That's a non-response if I've ever seen one.
jojobas··on Can Intel finally beat ARM on performance per Watt?
These would have a 3.5 port themselves, ready for a usb-c-3.5 cable of questionable DAC quality.
jojobas··on Can Intel finally beat ARM on performance per Watt?
Since when is damage covered by warranty?
jojobas··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
It appears to be a huge lapse on the part of command. These people should have eaten dinner thinking "I got them good, these fuckers".
jojobas··on Denmark Requires Oral Defenses for Students' Written Work to Counter AI Cheating
Somehow Russian technical universities were never relying on written work, there is some, but even that is is delivered in person with the tute teacher asking this and that.

Tangentially, the market for uni assignments (mostly humanities) for pay was huge before AI.

jojobas··on Discovery of a multicomponent alloy forged by the Hiroshima atomic blast
Soviets also blew up a 140kt bomb to make a lake.

jojobas··on LLMs reward expertise
That was kinda harnessed and prompted by a team of security experts, so there's that.

You still can install PGP/GPG and encrypt whatever you upload yourself.

Still waiting for anything comparable to what China does.

You're free to opt out of icloud/gcloud and the government will have a tough time extracting the pictures from your phone, as multiple lawsuits have shown.
jojobas··on Why is everyone trying to build a solid-state battery?
You're trying to put down the terminology and it's both unhelpful and incorrect.
jojobas··on The AI trade now runs on borrowed money, and the lenders are repricing it
Everything has been running on borrowed money since the 17th century.

You can flash yourself GrapheneOS with your own keys for the bootloader. Then again "I can't make sure all manufacturers aren't in collusion" when FBI sues Apple and others (and fails) over suspects' phone access is quite different from "every device sold in the country must have government malware", as it is in China.
jojobas··on Why is everyone trying to build a solid-state battery?
The word "battery" is a stand-in for electrochemical cell, which wood obviously isn't. Quite some advantages are expected from batteries that don't involve liquids or gels, whether incremental or not.

Cisco bricks leave the factory as pristine as they can be. An intercept sort of attack is possible, but involve quite some effort and risk.

These sticks leave the factory with malware pre-flashed, the postman brings them to your door with zero risk for the beneficiary.

There is Kodi Youtube plugin that takes a developer token and is then ad-free.
jojobas··on Why is everyone trying to build a solid-state battery?
Even then it's just a slow-burning fireball, not detonation, no shockwave.
jojobas··on Why is everyone trying to build a solid-state battery?
Non-solid-state batteries have liquid/gel electrolyte.

At least in capitalism you have the choice to look for a malware-free alternative. 100% USSR, had it survived to the IoT era, would penalize you for not having a state-mandated surveillance device on at all times.
jojobas··on The coolest use for the Vision Pro
>It's clear that it is the future.

What makes you think that?

jojobas··on The coolest use for the Vision Pro
You won't sell a $3.5k headset with a pitch like this where a cardboard phone holder suffices. It was supposed to take 3d videos of your children's first steps while your lenticular eyes stare creepily.
