johnnyn··on Ask HN: What are you doing to improve your health?
My children are also young (two under 5). It is incredibly difficult to find time to exercise. I play soccer one or two nights a week after the kids go to bed. It can be exhausting to do after a long day of work and kids, but it's worth it. I think yoga is a great idea too.

Other ways I try to maintain my health:

- I keep a pull up bar in the bedroom. It makes it really convenient to do any sort of physical activity. Even if it's just 10 pull ups a day.

- Spend time with your friends and family with and without the kids. This is the best thing for my emotional and mental health.

- Flexibility with my job helps my energy level exponentially. Being able to work from home and minimize my commute is incredible. And the ability to help my spouse (she works part-time) with the kids throughout the day instead of cramming it all into a few hours after a long day of work when you are already exhausted.

johnnyn··on Any stories of employees with equity successfully taking home over $1m? $500k?
I'm assuming Bill left out specific numbers because he doesn't want to share them. "Watching the sausage get made" just means he got to see all the details that went into building Twitch.

johnnyn··on Lenticular Photo Used To Secretly Convey Hot Line Number To Abused Kids
Give me a break. My kids see things I don't see all the time. At the playground, in the car, everywhere. I don't dismiss what they say and I have them tell me about it. If I'm in a hurry, I simply agree with them and move on.
johnnyn··on Ask HN: Good collaborative task management tool
+1 for Trello.
johnnyn··on Show HN: Webflow - Design responsive websites visually
This is so well done. Really impressive. It seems like a great tool for both designers and developers. The more I develop responsive sites, the more I realize how difficult and tedious it is. Hopefully, this takes a lot of the pain away.

I'm also super jealous you have a brother that you can develop a product with. My brother is a systems guy and doesn't want to create software at all.

johnnyn··on Posterous will turn off on April 30
This isn't fair at all. Posterous was very responsive to user feedback and reported bugs. Posterous engineers spent much of their time answering support emails directly and finding solutions for users. As a matter of fact, support emails go directly to engineers inboxes. Perhaps the problem was that there just weren't enough engineers.

Posterous may not have found a way to make money but the site was definitely meant to improve IMHO. Email, Groups, Spaces, slideshows, sharing to multiple social networks -- the list goes on.

johnnyn··on Is getting rich worth it?
I think the answer from Paul Buchheit on that post is the better one:

"I certainly don't regret it.

Wealth removes constraints. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing depends on the extent to which you needed those constraints. If you have a serious alcohol or other drug addiction, wealth could be fatal for you. In general, it makes people more of whatever they already were. If you're an asshole, getting more money will probably make you more of an asshole. However, if you have purpose and meaning in your life that goes beyond chasing the golden carrot, money can give you the freedom to focus on the things that truly matter to you.

One of the biggest dangers of wealth is that it often causes people to cut themselves off from the larger society, either out of fear or the belief that they are somehow better than others. We are all one."

johnnyn··on What it's like having a kid
Sorry to hear about all of your troubles Diego. Wishing you the best and hope it works out at some point. I've had quite a few friends go through the very same thing (fertility treatments, miscarriages) -- such difficult experiences.
johnnyn··on What it's like having a kid
Potocin and an epidural are not treatments. C-sections are emergency procedures and should only be done in emergency and high risk situations. Unfortunately, they are the norm now.

The problem is not C-sections and epidurals. The problem is that both are sometimes unecessarily given without much thought and for non-emergencies.

johnnyn··on What it's like having a kid
Awesome account of the birth and experience. Thanks for sharing and going into detail about such intimate moments. We had both of our kids at home via midwife, but the experience obviously has similarities to the hospital. Our second was breech and also did not make a sound at first. They warned us about that with breech babies but it was still very unsettling until she started crying -- as it was for you.

The last paragraph is perfect, couldn't have said it better myself.

johnnyn··on What it's like having a kid
Of course. It is not necessary unless you want it for the pain. A doctor might suggest it but it is ultimately a decision made by the couple.

johnnyn··on Want the Truth Behind “I Am Adam Lanza’s Mother”? Read her blog.
I can't speak for gorvechev but I can see why parents think of these things. It became exponentially more difficult with the addition of our second child. The older one is mostly sweet to the baby and she is super pleasant but there are times she is a "terrible" two. I'm not talking about not wanting to go somewhere, moreso throwing a toy on the baby or something like that. I have to protect both children but how do you handle a toddler picking on a baby? It becomes very hard.

We don't spank our kids but there are times I really want to.

johnnyn··on Want the Truth Behind “I Am Adam Lanza’s Mother”? Read her blog.
This was my first instinct as well. She has must have no kids.
johnnyn··on Want the Truth Behind “I Am Adam Lanza’s Mother”? Read her blog.
This is ridiculous. Parenting is really freaking hard. I'm a father of two small kids but I can't imagine being a single mom of four kids, with one mentally ill, like Liza. I commend her for being so honest and using her writing to get through such a difficult thing like parenting.
johnnyn··on Seven Things I Hate About Agile
I totally agree about the scrum master role. I have never understood the need for a scrum master when there are product managers and tech leads. Scrum masters usually don't have technical or product experience. I think some product managers just hire scrum masters to do their grunt work.
johnnyn··on Ask HN: How do you stay productive after work?
Totally. I'm about to add a newborn to a 2 year old. Getting up early is an unrealistic option because I'm already up early with the kids. Working on side projects after 9p works best for me. Kids are in bed at 7p or so, hang out with the wife for a couple hours and wind down, then start on some projects. I wonder if other fathers who work on side projects have similar schedules.
johnnyn··on Ask HN: How do I make programming my job?
Github is your friend. Create an account and put some of your code on there (outside of work of course ;) ). I'm sure you could come up some a neat Matlab or Python tool to build.
johnnyn··on iBooks: DRM gone bad
This is most likely because of the publisher, not iBooks. Publishers have a copyable flag for each book in their ONIX file. Retailers have to abide by this flag when displaying the eBook. This sucks but that is the eBook industry for you.
johnnyn··on Ask HN: How do I make programming my job?
Build something and start contributing to the open source community. Once you have some work out there, I bet you will be able to find a programming job. A lot of great companies don't pay attention to your degree, they will just want good problem solvers who can learn quickly.
johnnyn··on Posterous acquired by Twitter
Congrats Posterous! IMO, this is one of the best teams around and Twitter will be lucky to have them on board.
johnnyn··on Show HN: Help us curate the web’s best content for learning programming & design
This is great. When I first learned web development, I found it pretty hard to figure out which tutorials were best and which ones were a waste of time. This would have helped a ton.
johnnyn··on Show HN: Our startup launched: create visual supports for special education
I think it looks great. I'm not your target audience either, but my cousin is a special education teacher and she's very excited about it after I passed it along to her.
johnnyn··on Farewell Stack Exchange
Wow, this was exactly what my dad did. He also was very well educated, and he also became bitter by his sacrifices as I got older. I came to appreciate his sacrifice when I became a father but I promised to never blame my kids for any choices I make. The difference between my father and myself is that I already feel like I have proved enough by becoming a father. If I died today, I would have no regrets. He passed away at 56 when I was in college and I know he had regrets. Like you said, I would rather have had an absent father than a bitter one too.
johnnyn··on Farewell Stack Exchange
Exactly my suggestion. My commute is an hour each way but I work from home on Thursdays and will soon work from home on Tuesday as well. You should talk to your employer. They will most likely understand. If they don't, leave and go somewhere that will. It's a good time to be a Ruby developer in SF, so you have some leverage there.
johnnyn··on Why French Parents Are Superior
I think the story at the end about speaking to your child with conviction and the right tone is spot on.

I have a 20 month old daughter. I constantly struggle with this because I want to be nice even when saying 'no', but it doesn't take long to realize that being stern without being scary is the best balance. I realized that my 'no' when she opens the pantry door is totally without conviction and she doesn't respond at all. But my 'no' when she strays off the sidewalk and near the street is obviously much more stern and she knows I'm serious. The most difficult thing is saying 'no' with conviction when you just don't really care that much (like the pantry door).

johnnyn··on From Founders to Decorators, Facebook Riches
Why would Facebook pay someone to paint murals with stock options? This just seems crazy, especially considering it was after the first Peter Thiel investment. They could have easily paid the guy a few thousand bucks. I can easily understand employees like chefs, security guards, etc. becoming rich, but a short term mural painter?! I'm baffled.
