jogu··on The Rise of the Japanese Toilet
Washiki literally means “Japanese style” and can be used in other contexts but, in general conversation has come to mean “Japanese style toilet”.
jogu··on GitHub MCP exploited: Accessing private repositories via MCP
Is there any reason that this attack is limited to the GitHub MCP or could it be applied to others as well?

For example, even if the GitHub MCP server only had access to the single public repository, could the agent be convinced to exfiltrate information from some other arbitrary MCP sever configured in the environment to that repository?

jogu··on How MiniDisc Worked
There's a YouTube video by "This Does Not Compute" that discusses this:

jogu··on A 2025 Survey of Rust GUI Libraries
Yeah, clicking this link is causing my browser to download a "Human_fart.wav", not sure what it actually contains for obvious reasons.
jogu··on Tariff: A Python package that imposes tariffs on Python imports
The tariff definition is just a dict so it's pretty straightforward to pass a dict that has a default value instead.
jogu··on I bought a Mac
Unfortunately, I don't think supporting a platform by providing prebuilt binaries is as simple as "just don't touch it". There's no guarantee things will continue to build for the platform, nor that upstream projects won't remove explicit support from their code bases if the effort to maintain it exists.
jogu··on Run RISC-V Binaries on AMD Zen-Series CPUs via Microcode Modification
This type of contest style recruiting just seems like a way to trick people into writing code for free, and even if you do win the prize money seems laughably small for what they're asking to receive.
jogu··on Testing DVD-R and CD-R 25 years later: optical disks from Japan
Any drive will be capable of ripping just fine. If you really want to get into the nitty gritty finding a drive with well known read offsets and the ability to defeat the drive cache is a good bet so you can compare against the accuraterip database.

jogu··on OpenVINO AI effects for Audacity
I've used this plugin on an AMD CPU, it definitely works.
jogu··on Show HN: I made an open-source laptop from scratch
I tested out of high school and went to community college instead, one of the best decisions of my life.
jogu··on Using eSIMs with devices that only have a physical SIM slot via a 9eSIM SIM car
At least for me personally when I use my iPhone as a hotspot it tends to be one of two cases:

1) Tethering to my laptop when I need to check something for work in a pinch

2) Letting friends use my data if they don't have any or have a limited plan

In both cases, I think it makes sense to not automatically connect every time my phone is near.

jogu··on Guitar chord karaoke with Vamp, Chordino, and FFmpeg (2022)
There's an openvino plugin for audacity that can do music separation but it only supports 4 tracks at the moment (drums, bass, vocals, other).

jogu··on I've Acquired a New Superpower
Yes, it had a split screen option where the two images were the same size and side by side. Can't recall what kind of TV it was... perhaps a Sony?
jogu··on I've acquired a new superpower
I remember doing this as a child on our TV that had a picture-in-picture setting. I would set the same channel twice and cross my eyes pretending that it was 3d TV.
jogu··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
For what it’s worth the change isn’t from full remote to 5 days a week. It’s from 3 days in office to 5 so it shouldn’t be as drastic of a shift.
jogu··on Akira Toriyama has died
Yeah, this is more of the nuance, my rough translation would be:

“He had many projects he was passionately working on and many more things he wanted to accomplish, it’s unfortunate (that he won’t be able to complete them)”.

jogu··on Nearly half of non-Tesla EV owners want to go back to ICE
I think it’s less about driving non-stop cross country and more about how much of a long term decision and investment purchasing a car is. Even if only 1/100 trips I take is over 100 miles I still might want the car I purchase to be able to make that trip.
jogu··on Tsundoku – Phenomenon of acquiring reading materials but letting them pile up
Knowing both English and Japanese it's fascinating to see what Japanese words the English speaking world finds interesting. All sources seem to point back to the 2014 article by Jonathan Crow.

In essence I see this as the equivalent of "backlog" in most cases, i.e. (my backlog) is piling up. And is otherwise a fairly straight forward concept to convey in English. Hardly "untranslatable", and seems rather silly to import a word that's more or less a pun that would be lost upon all of the people using it.

One thing the English wikipedia doesn't mention is that 積んでおく (tsundeoku) has a contraction/slang form 積んどく (tsundoku) which I think solidifies the play on words to create 積読.

jogu··on NEC PC 8201A
Have you seen the clockwork pi devterm? Very similar vibes and supports different compute modules.
jogu··on The 'Egg' Laptop
There’s actually three different types, 実印 (official stamp, registered at your local ward office etc), 銀行印 (bank stamp registered when you open a bank account) and 認印 (informal approval seal). For 実印 and 銀行印 the stamp has to be directly tied to your official name. But the last of which can pretty much be anything which is what this is.
jogu··on Open Source PC That Fits in Your Pocket
Not 17 inches but their first project was a laptop:

jogu··on Proxy Chrome extensions are not going to be usable in MV3
I've found that many times when a site doesn't work in Firefox it's actually extensions causing issues rather than Firefox itself. That being said, there are still compatibility issues from time to time!
jogu··on Framework Laptop 2.5Gbps Ethernet Expansion Card
You'll likely have to switch to an Arch-like distro as Arch is systemd nowadays too.
jogu··on Ask HN: Location based pay is killing my motivation, how do others handle it?
Just a small nit but I think you mixed up OP (Original Poster) and GP (Grand Parent).
jogu··on Andy Jassy's $214M salary is 'excessive' and should be vetoed – advisory firms
> The comp is actually more like $20M/year if stock price doesn't tank.

I feel like a lot of people are missing the "stock price doesn't tank" part. How much he actually gets is going to pend on the value of the stock at the time. With the way things are going I wouldn't be surprised (even if it's just this year) his take home ends up being significantly less given AMZN is down 30+% since last year.

jogu··on MIPS provides highly scalable RISC processor IP
To be fair this isn't an announcement of a product or anything like that, so their line of RISC-V processors could have distinct branding e.g. FooBar RISC-V Processors (by MIPS).

Totally agree though that they should probably be careful and put some thought into how they brand these.

jogu··on Undocumented x86 instructions to read/ write microcode
RISC-V certainly doesn’t prevent this kind of thing but it does at least provide the opportunity for this kind of behavior to be challenged. Given anyone is free to manufacture a RISC-V processor it’s at least feasible another company could step in and provide a product that doesn’t do these things if that’s what the market demands.
jogu··on MNT Reform laptop has fully open hardware and software–for better or worse
The crowdsupply page has some insight on why they chose the SoM:

https://www.crowdsupply.com/mnt/reform

> Both SoC and memory chips sit on a System-on-Module (SoM) that we source from Boundary Devices, a US company that specializes in i.MX reference designs. We selected their "Nitrogen8M SOM" module for Reform because it is the only available module for which you can download the complete schematics and understand what every component does.

jogu··on The computer built to last 50 years (2021)
I'm certainly not an expert on hardware but this statement from the crowdsupply page piqued my curiosity:

> The SoM plugs into the Reform motherboard’s central 200-pin SO-DIMM connector. This means that anyone will be able to design a replacement SoM to power Reform with a completely different CPU or an FPGA, for example.

So long as you can produce a pin compatible board, the exact details of that board actually don't seem to matter. My first thought when I saw this was "I wonder if you could create a conversion board for CM4 modules" and sure enough the creator of the laptop is working on exactly that:

https://twitter.com/mntmn/status/1462833241933627400

If they can actually pull off a CM4 compatibility board, I'd be super compelled to buy one knowing there's a growing ecosystem of compatible SoMs.

jogu··on More Americans are saying they’re ‘vaxxed and done’
I agree, the reward is neither clear nor consistent to individuals.

It's also worth nothing the sacrifice to be made isn't consistent and is highly subjective to an individual. A single person who moved to a new town and spends months isolated, or a business owner, etc. is making very different sacrifices from a person who's in a stable marriage with a family working a software engineering job.
