joelmaat··on Does having a high IQ make you less creative?
To respond to the title, having a high IQ does not make you less creative. Simple.

As for the Terman study, I think people with high IQ scores don't "go places" mainly due to laziness, lack of ambition (failing to see the point in it all), or due constant harassment by those envious of their intelligence or those that feel inferior, or those that see an easy target. After years of taking a beating many end up leading simple lives in which they hope to just survive.

joelmaat··on Ask HN: Can Vipassana meditation help me concentrate better?
Possibly. To test it out, you can use brainwave entrainment software like Neuro-Programmer 3. Just loop the session and listen to it as you work and see if it helps you.
joelmaat··on Color CEO Bill Nguyen Checks Out Of Day-To-Day Operations
Have you ever listened to this guy? He's completely full of it; one line of BS after another. It's not even worth hearing what he has to say.
joelmaat··on Ask HN: How do you meditate?
I use Neuro Programmer 3 to produce sound at the right frequency, then I sit there listening to them. Everything becomes quiet, and when it's all over, my mind is clear and peaceful.
joelmaat··on Steve Jobs will be forgotten in 50 years
Even sooner than that. If you aren't in the textbooks, then you are history.
joelmaat··on Is it possible to become 'excellent' at both design and coding?
Front-end and design is one thing. Get better at them, and build your career on that. On the other hand, companies will usually try to box you in to one of those disciplines. Don't underestimate how insane they will get as they try to do it. If they succeed, then either way you should always find time to pursue other interests, and to develop other skills, and to grow in your main field, or else one day you'll be left ass out with nowhere to go. What you know now can become old news very quickly.

For your future to be bright, you should retain this "duality." And branch off on your own one day (before the ship sails).

Specifically about the front-end vs. design question, what I've seen is that most design+front-end folks reach a maturation point with the front-end technologies (and it becomes mostly about keeping up), then spend the rest of their time further developing their design skills.

I'll say it. I think that the best or most successful future tech entrepreneurs will be the Front-end Engineers and the Marketers. They are sitting there on the edge everyday with the users, and (overtime) they intuitively learn exactly what matters.

Most of the others fail.

joelmaat··on Augment Intelligence - Brain Stimulation Makes the 'Impossible Problem' Solvable
This is amazing. Clearly tDCS can be made to augment general intelligence. Tell me, can you solve the problem presented?
joelmaat··on Ideas Wish List
I especially like the one that adds a slot to a smartphone case to hold a credit card, or a few dollars!
joelmaat··on Yet Another Hacker News Redesign
I have a userscript and zoom (twice) in Chrome to get the text larger. I like being inspired and made happy when I read through the titles, and I like Feedly's UI, so I made my version of HackerNews look exactly the same.

Some days, I just love being a programmer/designer. So much independence and control.

joelmaat··on In Silicon Valley, designers emerge as rock stars
They haven't figured out a thing. This is just more hype, as was the frontend engineer push of 2010/2011.. hopefully some designers/engineers can make out well with all this attention, however. Preferably talented ones.
joelmaat··on Google+ gets a redesign
I can't believe they just copied the header of Facebook's timeline approach.

I wish they'd be more original and old-Apple-product-experience changing with this damn "project."

joelmaat··on Facebook acquires Instagram
This situation reminds me of when Facebook was worried about Twitter: most of the worry ended up being unfounded. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Facebook was eyeing Instagram, as Facebook's photo viewing UI is now fairly similar to Instagram's. But I wonder if the worry about Instagram merited the $1B exit. Either way, given how small the Instagram team is, they must feel mighty satisfied right now.
joelmaat··on Yahoo announces 2,000 job cuts
They were trying to hire me right before the news hit. They have a lot of nerve. I am dumbfounded. Good thing retaliatory managers have left me without references and I would bomb out of the process for that reason, rather than for a lack of technical ability.

In other news, I have made a string of bad decisions as far as who to work "for." I should do something about that. Perhaps I should let someone (more capable) decide what I do next.

Sometimes its good to have no choice but to follow your dream, all else and all other's (face saving, arrogant) bullshit aside.

joelmaat··on Ask HN: What do you think is the last Google Hit?
1. Clearly its Chrome.

2. Nothing is exciting me, not even Google+ or Android. I wish I could get excited about Google+. I wanted Google+ to work out so bad, I even went as far as trying to join the team (before the product was even announced to the world) when I had my stint at Google (by the way, everyone internally was running away from it, I think its funny. They had to be strong armed by the power on high's reallocation of resources).

joelmaat··on I'm burning out and I can't tell anyone
Take a break.

Become one of the inspiration junkies. Go to the gym. Work on another side of the business. Schedule your day, leaving time away from your startup. Don't let what's urgent mascarade around with the set of things that actually need to get done. Start taking legal "smart" drugs like Piracetam, Aniracetam, Pramiracetam, Noopept, Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Lion's Mane Mushroom, Magnesium L-Threonate, etc.. in addition to helping you get "smarter" and increasing your productivity/proficiency they'll give you motivation and a serene feeling.

Meditate.

joelmaat··on Ask HN: Would you quit your six figure, promising career path to learn to code?
Just to learn how to code, rather than to branch out on your own, or to build your own thing, or to launch your tested idea? No.
joelmaat··on Ask HN: What's the best way to get users for a PAID web service?
Advertise, then advertise on communities within your niche, then become a contributor. If your product is excellent, and relieves users from a terrible experience, then word of mouth marketing will be there. You can do things to help word of mouth spread faster (ask users to recommend your product to friends/colleagues after you know they've had a great experience).

You have to nail your pitch, and your pricing strategy.

joelmaat··on Maintaining Hacker News Culture
I'm annoyed that Hacker News isn't as active as Reddit. We need more (good) content and discussion. How can we achieve this while... maintaining the culture?
joelmaat··on Do you actually get projects from the Hacker News Contractors spreadsheet?
Link to spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlD_6iEb8Ed9dGs...
joelmaat··on Apple Announces Plans to Initiate Dividend and Share Repurchase Program
Buy at the market peak. Genius.
joelmaat··on Google 'obsessed' with chasing Facebook
What is the real reason for this, other than display ads and (maybe) attention? Are the founders pissed that Zuckerberg might end up richer than them? Is it for "copying"?
joelmaat··on TED Talks joins Netflix's stable of streaming content
What you've said has nothing to do with my comment.
joelmaat··on TED Talks joins Netflix's stable of streaming content
It is funny that Netflix doesn't seem to be serving up relevant content to me. Discovery is just not that good yet. Everytime I visit the site, I have to go digging. Maybe (and I'm hoping) its just this selection problem. I hope they add more (good) titles to streaming, and fix this discovery issue.

I wonder how much licensing fees factor into them hiding good content vs. playing it up to show that they are still relevant.

joelmaat··on Kevin Rose Will Join Google
I'm simply surprised that Google would do this, but I guess there was a foreshadow in early November when Google Ventures invested.

I don't know what they expect to come of this move, but I'm actually, all else aside, wanting for this Google+ thing to work out. I'm actually still a fan.

As for Kevin Rose, sometimes I listen to him speak and it seems like he's on the ball and has his finger on the pulse, and at other times he just sounds dumb. I was a little bit unsure if he had an in-depth understanding of what was really going on or if he was just sounding the part, but after listening to his webcam pitch and seeing the subpar Digg v4 that came of that line of thinking, I'm going to say he doesn't really understand a thing.

But maybe that doesn't matter, because knowing the Google monster he'll probably be nothing more than a pawn. Time will tell.

On another note, Google+'s problems are really really obvious to me, so I'm at a loss at to why they don't just fix things. Maybe they are trying to "stage the rollout to minimize how much they spook people," but then again what sounds reasonable and true is often reduced to nothing more than another line of politics driven BS'ing with these people.

Just get on with it already!

I have no problem with the Milk team getting an exit. I am not one to be jealous of anything like that. And all this talk about Engineer-entrepreneurs working their ass off for years and not getting anywhere doesn't make me shed a tear either. There are a few Engineers for whom things just didn't work out, but by and large if you were working on something that long and had nothing come of it, then put the hard work aside-- your product/business/positioning sucked! Get over it.

joelmaat··on Kevin Rose Will Join Google
"Wilma"

WTF?

joelmaat··on Kevin Rose Will Join Google
What does my comment have to do with reading minds?

And it "doesn't matter now, but if it keeps up.."

joelmaat··on Kevin Rose Will Join Google
In his case, it seems to be making him dumber. Sloppy. He's starting to believe his BS. Doesn't matter now, but if it keeps up..
joelmaat··on Kevin Rose Will Join Google
"Vic's" ego is getting bigger. That usually spells failure.
joelmaat··on Kevin Rose Will Join Google
Is this a joke?
joelmaat··on Ask HN: If you had a month of free time, what would you learn?
Machine learning, neural networks, bayesian systems, CORDIC, Python, etc..
