joelennon··on Show HN: NoFile.io – A simple file storage site with lots of perks
Nice work, looks like an interesting project. I do think your site copy could do with some work though. It's not entirely clear from the current text what the service actually is - is it for sharing files with others, is it a Dropbox competitor or is it an S3 competitor?

The following phrase made me feel a little uncomfortable about using the product.

"How can this be a free service? Magic. In the future a paid service will be introduced offering more awesome features, but don't worry it shouldn't affect the free service."

I'd rephrase this - definitely remove the shouldn't as that tells me that while my files shouldn't be deleted, they might be.

Finally, just a minor thing, but the down arrow under the "Click Here Or Drag & Drop To Start Uploading" doesn't work for me (latest Chrome on Mac). I assume it should scroll down the page but it didn't for me at least.

joelennon··on Ask HN: What are your favorite tech podcasts?
I launched a development focused podcast directory (https://programmingpodcasts.com) last week. It features over 200 podcasts in the categories you mention.

Some I listen to regularly include:

- Full Stack Radio - http://www.fullstackradio.com

- SERadio - http://www.se-radio.net

- The Changelog - https://changelog.com

- Ruby Rogues - https://devchat.tv/ruby-rogues

- The Laravel Podcast - http://www.laravelpodcast.com

- Bread Time - https://breadtime.simplecast.fm

joelennon··on Show HN: A curated directory of podcasts for software developers
Hi everyone, developer of ProgrammingPodcasts.com here. I started listening to some developer-related podcasts last year and was surprised with how difficult it was to discover more podcasts using iTunes and other platforms. Hence I built this site. Feedback/questions much appreciated.
joelennon··on Show HN: clob, a blog platform for developers
Thanks for the feedback. It will be challenging to offer both extensibility and performance safeguards. One idea I had was to do some form of performance evaluation of each theme/plugin and show a score or impact grade to the user when they are enabling it. A bit like how Google Fonts shows you the impact of the web fonts you've selected on page weight.

I know a few people who have had problems with speed with their Wordpress sites, will tell them to check out Cachoid.

joelennon··on Show HN: clob, a blog platform for developers
Fair question given the current state of the project! Right now other than support for GitHub Flavored Markdown and syntax highlighting not all that much! I'm in the process of putting together a project website which has a detailed roadmap for the coming months.

The goal is to have developer centric features like making it easy to embed gists, jsbin and the likes. Also integration with GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket to showcase the repos you contribute to. Other features like an API, webhooks, 2FA, Oauth planned too.

Probably posted it prematurely but wanted to ship it and get some early feedback.

joelennon··on Show HN: clob, a blog platform for developers
Developer of clob here. clob is built on Laravel 5.4. It's a very early release but the goal is to build a blog platform that specifically targets developers. If you have any questions, I'd be delighted to answer them here.
joelennon··on Ignite UI is now open source
ExtJS is $895 per developer with a minimum order of 5 licenses.
joelennon··on Why you should never use Upwork
Just so you know, you inadvertently included Kevin's email address in one of the screenshots. You blurred it out from the "from" section, but it's also showing in a "flagged as spam" yellow box. I'm sure this wasn't your intention.
joelennon··on Stripe reduces fees by two fold for European merchants or customers
EDIT: the site has been updated now to reflect the pricing.

Got the same (based in Ireland). There's nothing reflected on their website about it yet, it says that pricing is 2.9% + 30c + VAT. Pretty sure it was previously 2.4% + 24c + VAT in Ireland. This means that pricing for non European cards is actually increasing, and the fixed portion of the fee is also going up by 1c for all charges.

Also from the mail:

"As always, volume discounts apply to our larger users—please get in touch with us once you're processing more than 30,000EUR per month and we will provide a custom quote."

Interestingly, the figure on the website is €20,000 so looks like that threshold is going up too.

The new rate is a great reduction and kudos to Stripe for dropping their prices - and by so much. The fixed portion is still a stinger though - especially if you handle transactions with small amounts. Would be great to see Stripe roll out a microtransaction rate with a higher percentage but very low fixed portion, much like PayPal offers.

joelennon··on Weblog.sh – hosted blogging from the command-line
Really like the concept. Hopefully you can work out the issues raised by others, can't wait to see where this goes. Consider your current costs covered.
joelennon··on Getting to €20k in MRR in 90 days
Great post Niall. Just wondering what groundwork you had laid down before the 90 days. Also, staggering numbers on the Bow Wow Times site. Do you think it's mainly down to the fact that people just love dogs (and articles about dogs) or is there anything you guys did that would be replicable for other B2C markets?
joelennon··on Show HN: Create a papercraft book from any ISBN – experiment with React and Node
BitLit is a company that allows you to upload a "shelfie" of your books and they will recognise the books from their spines. So don't give up hope on that image database, it must exist. Nice work, looks like an interesting project.

joelennon··on List of available 2 letter domain names
Thanks for this. I picked up wy.is for €29. Real impulse buy. Was thinking it could work for a "why is...<enter question here>?" type site. Probably silly but I have no self control when it comes to buying domains I'll never use.
joelennon··on Apple Increases Maximum App Size from 2GB to 4GB
Oddly this was my first reaction too. Thst said, 2gb was always enough to enable Square Enix to deliver FF7 to iOS if they really wanted to, so I wouldn't hold my breath.
joelennon··on Ars’ small taste of no-tech travel
tl;dr some guy shut off his phone for 22 hours and didn't find it too bad.
joelennon··on Nobody Is Using Google+
This piece only looks at Google+ posts, it fails to take into consideration other features, such as Hangouts. I haven't posted an update on Google+ in years (except for changing my profile photo recently), but I use Hangouts almost every day.
joelennon··on Why switching jobs is almost always a good idea
If you're not happy in your current role, make your employer aware of that fact. If you believe you are underpaid, say it. If you're overworked, say it. I'm not saying you'll necessarily get results but I think people all too often look for the door when what is making them unhappy can probably be resolved where they are. Of course if you're miserable and need a change that's a different story. But remember that if you're good, losing you is going to hit your employer hard. The cost of replacing good people is so high, any good employer will try to resolve any issues you may have in order to keep you.
joelennon··on PresidentObama on GitHub
Let's hope he keeps the nuclear launch codes out of his code and in environment variables.
joelennon··on eNom DNS is down
Yep, we're affected too. Will migrate elsewhere first thing tomorrow. Any recommendations? Thinking AWS Route 53.
joelennon··on Ask HN: Technical director from 6 years, my boss recruited a CTO
From your post you cite your contribution to the company primarily in terms of building software. Have you experience building and managing large teams of engineers? Have you experience working with finances, budgeting, forecasting? Have you planned out a solid structure that will enable teams to grow? Have you strong knowledge of technical architecture and infrastructure as well as software development? I could go on. Is this all part of your role as technical director?

Maybe you have all of these things, but the main thing you called out was that you have "built software that only a few people could have done". Being CTO of a 450 person company involves a lot more than just building software. Again I could be misreading your situation, please clarify if I am.

It sucks that your boss said he would never hire a manager for tech, but by the sounds of it the company dynamic is volatile with acquisitions. As for whether you should quit, no one here can tell you whether you should or not. Why not raise your grievance with your boss and make the case for getting what you want, and then make your decision from there. Just be sure you actually know what it is that you want - if you want to keep primarily building software a CTO role may not be for you.

joelennon··on Show HN: Who's going to Startup School?
Express
joelennon··on NodeConf comes to London
They're already on sale, bought mine earlier so I'm guessing they meant GMT. Would make sense given that the event is on in London.
joelennon··on NodeConf comes to London
What time does it start and end? Trying to see if I can fly in and out on the Saturday or if I'll need to stay over.
joelennon··on The lessons of Bulletstorm and the problem with price-points
Ironically in the case of Bulletstorm it made a ton of sales primarily because the Xbox 360 version included early access to the Gears of War 3 beta. If it wasn't for the backing of Epic Games and EA, the title would likely have tanked. Personally I'm glad it didn't, I loved the game and always thought it was very underrated.
joelennon··on Hoodie – Fast web app development
It's also notoriously painful to register a .ie domain. You need some connection to Ireland, but even if you do there are restrictions on what you can register (needing to have a company name or registered business name matching the domain, for example). They have loosened up considerably on the discretionary domains, but it still seems to take at least a week to get your registration approved and completed.
joelennon··on The Domain Market is a Mess
The problem with this solution is that many people listing domains on sites like Sedo will want to continue to run a website (or a "parked" landing page with spammy ads) until the site has sold. I guess ownership could be transferred with the understanding that the broker will keep the name servers intact until a sale, but this sounds kind of messy and difficult to manage.
joelennon··on Hackers text ATMs for cash via Windows XP flaws
This is hardly an XP specific vulnerability. If the attacker can access an ATM's USB port they could probably achieve this regardless of the OS.
joelennon··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Have you considered building a mac version? I love little utilities like this, especially at your price point. Nice product.
joelennon··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
What a bizarre comment, I expected to see American flags and red and blue text but the site looks like any website, American or otherwise.
joelennon··on Codename: BlueMix – IBM's New PaaS Offering
Also check out JazzHub, IBMs entry in the online software tools space. It provides source code management (unfortunately based on Rational Team Concert and not something like Git or Mercurial), agile tools and a decent web based code editor based on Eclipse Orion. It integrates nicely with BlueMix, you can one click deploy from within JazzHub.

I had early access to this so I could write an article for their developerWorks site on using the MEAN (mongo, express, angular and node) stack to build a polls app. The platform's not perfect, but its good to see IBM going in the right direction with this sort of stuff.
