joe_guy··on Mold linker: targeting macOS/iOS now requires a commercial license
Many things that target macOS and everything that targets iOS will have a CI running on macOS.

For better or worse, iOS is not a niche target.

joe_guy··on ‘We kind of lost track’: how SBF blurred lines between FTX and Alameda
> Every time he opens his mouth he is removing freedom to maneuver from his future defense team.

IANAL but since it's not under oath does it really matter what he's saying?

joe_guy··on Show HN: I wrote a free eBook about many lesser-known/secret database tricks
Why not a series of blog posts?

To me, the reader, what value does sharing my email or it being in The incredibly less flexible "ebook" format have?

joe_guy··on Lastpass Security Incident
It's 60 minutes as a very high estimate. You might spend a life time together.

joe_guy··on FTC restores rigorous enforcement of law banning unfair methods of competition
fyi, arguments become immediately less convincing when they include "m$"

(or make a lot of politically one sided claims without citation)

joe_guy··on Why modern software is slow
What emulation layers are you speculating there are?
joe_guy··on YouTube’s ‘dislike’ barely works according to new study on recommendations
Amazon actually has a pretty detailed page that lets you control what feeds back into your recommendations.

joe_guy··on Brew Is a Bad Neighbor
The tooling side isn't the tricky part, it's the insane amount of work that is required to create and maintain each package. You need massive community buy in. Because of this, unfortunately, the best package managers aren't the most sound, the best are the most popular.
joe_guy··on A girl wanted to keep the goat she raised for a county fair. They killed it
What happens if a wolf killed the goat? Surely they wouldn't be unconditionally criminal at that point.

Perhaps the third party needs to be made whole, also. IANAL but paying off contracts is extremely common.

joe_guy··on A girl wanted to keep the goat she raised for a county fair. They killed it
They offered to make the other party whole.

If they were careless and a wild animal killed the goat, theyd not of unconditionally committed a crime, theyd only need to make the other party whole.

joe_guy··on A girl wanted to keep the goat she raised for a county fair. They killed it
It would be more akin to selling someone a car, then telling them you're giving them the money back instead of the vehicle.
joe_guy··on A girl wanted to keep the goat she raised for a county fair. They killed it
> am a fan of honoring contracts and sales.

It's perfectly acceptable to violate a contract. It doesn't matter you're not a fan of this. As long as you follow through with the terms of violating it.

> Breach of contract is not a crime or even a tort. Punitive damages are generally not an available remedy. The only remedies are to make the non-breaching party whole. The main theory behind this rule is that the law should not punish economically efficient breach.

The contract was not in the article but we can assume that it would be whatever financial compensation would be to make them whole. That's something they offered but the other party kept making threats that they would be criminally charged, even though the article states it was within their rights to not sell the goat.

IANAL but I can't imagine what permitted the police to be involved.

joe_guy··on Guidance to make federally funded research freely available without delay
Why should they not?

joe_guy··on You can’t buy one square foot of land in Scotland and become a Scottish lord
We're discussing what we as individuals can do, but a yelp for youtubers isnt needed and wouldnt solve a larger misinformation problem anyways (yelp didnt make bad food disappear).

The following isnt just for youtubers, its for all information.

As individuals, we can ensure they present evidence. If we're going to attempt something drastic off this evidence, ie, claim Scottish Lordship, we should validate the evidence ourselves or ask a credentialed validator. Ie, a Scottish lawyer.

* Did they present evidence? * If yes, do they posses credentials that make them a meaningful evaluator? * If yes, do other meaningful evaluators agree?

It's not dissimilar to the scientific method.

joe_guy··on You can’t buy one square foot of land in Scotland and become a Scottish lord
Like everything else -- what evidence do they present and what credentials do they posses that makes them a valuable interpreter of such evidence.
joe_guy··on Why does gRPC insist on trailers?
I had never heard of HTTP trailers. So FYI

> The Trailer response header allows the sender to include additional fields at the end of chunked messages in order to supply metadata that might be dynamically generated while the message body is sent, such as a message integrity check, digital signature, or post-processing status.

joe_guy··on Why nobody ever wins the car at the mall (2018)
Being on the DNC making it so no business ever can call you is a monkey paw wish.

Your bank is absolutely permitted to call you regardless of you being on the DNC. You have an existing business relationship with them.

joe_guy··on NES Game Genie Technical Notes (2001)
fyi, the Game Genie was actually rom patches not memory writing. But knowing the ram address would definitely make finding the rom to patch in disassembly much easier.

Game Shark on later systems did "freeze" ram and the Pro models on psx/n64 had really nice code searching features like you're describing.

joe_guy··on 4 in 5 Americans who need insulin have taken on credit card debt to cover cost
Yes, for a surgeon. Scroll down to internal medicine, which is closer to who will be prescribing insulin, and note it's 8k to 50k. (No median or mean is given?)

I'm not at all shocked someone who cuts people open and removes or adds objects has a high liability insurance.

I have no source for this, but blaming medical system costs on liability insurance feels like a way of blaming the patients instead of the system. "If only greedy people were not trying to get rich quick off lawsuits."

joe_guy··on It's not acceptable that Google does not offer support to users
No. But it's not possible to do so.

Given an email lockout, a $100+ incidence support cost would be reasonable. But there might be legal implications there because it's likely their fault the account was (wrongly) locked out. IANAL

Can you provide a recent example of cigarettes being marketed to kids in USA?
