joe-mccann··on Poll: What is your religion?
Secular Humanist, so I filed under non/agnon/etc.

http://www.secularhumanism.org/index.php?page=what&secti...

My opinion is that the argument FOR the existence of God is just as philosophically bankrupt to argue AGAINST the existence of God. Best answer: I don't know.

Secular humanism covers the majority of my values without ascribing to any dogmatism. I have a feeling a lot more people are actually secular humanist, but may not know it.

joe-mccann··on Is it Now Acceptable to Require JavaScript?
On mobile webapps/sites, absolutely. I have built a gracefully degrading/progressively enhanced mobile website here: www.zocalodesign.com (hit/spoof with mobile browser)

The effort it took me to make this site gracefully degrade was completely not worth it, even though it wasn't THAT difficult for this site. However, my client actually only wanted it to work "on the iPhone".

Furthermore, now with plans for Google to expose native hardware APIs in their mobile browser via JavaScript, how do you gracefully degrade access to the camera or accelerometer?

Finally, on desktop browsing experiences, this argument won't even be around soon, mainly because the current battle is native versus browser (engine) not JS versus non-JS. We are building apps in the browser that are giving us native desktop functionality. You simply cannot do this at the level that people expect (in regards to user experience) nor functionality without JavaScript.

joe-mccann··on Google Has Own $26.5bil Trading Floor, Predicts Market With Search Data?
Could Google be using their search data for...

equals

easiest way to drive traffic to your site.

Quite frankly, data that is scraped and analyzed by the algos and quant funds is probably much more relevant, but it does not mean Google could not define a strategy based on search data; however, it is pure speculation and link bait to just throw the assertion out there willy nilly.

joe-mccann··on A better mobile version of HN. Please review my weekend project
Was planning on doing something similar using YQL. Nice one.
joe-mccann··on Stock Selloff May Have Been Triggered by a Trader Error
This is complete horseshit. The "trader" was a "computer".
joe-mccann··on Today the Dow dropped 1000 points in about ten minutes.
From a lofty level, yes.
joe-mccann··on Today the Dow dropped 1000 points in about ten minutes.
I never said anything about a "blip" and it is far from it. The equities markets are easy to manipulate; all you need is more $$ than the other guy and if all your friends are on board, that's a lot of $$ to move the market in the direction of your favor.

One of the reasons the forex markets are MUCH more difficult to manipulate is that you have $3.5 trillion traded daily. Not sure who can simply move that market. Equities on the other hand, much easier....

Honestly, if you don't know that CNBC is to the financial markets as what the Hee Haw is to the news, then I can't help you.

CNBC does NOT know what the cause of this was. The exchanges will come out with some "computer glitch" story or the "fat finger" excuse, but neither of those are true. FWIW, the fat finger excuse is, in a nutshell, some trader accidentally pressing the wrong button on the trading desk.

The market was at a technical support level with various moving averages, timelines, etc. all coming into play. Many people had/have stop losses because the market was/is looking due for a correction. Algo/HFT pounced on this, collectively, and thus the massive drop.

Trust me, if you are buying into what CNBC tells you, you are really missing the truth...

joe-mccann··on Today the Dow dropped 1000 points in about ten minutes.
Welcome to the world of High Frequency/Algorithmic trading.

In this case, essentially every person that had a "stop loss" order was just hunted down by a wave of HFT programs and all those stop loss orders were triggered, which send "market orders" which means, fill my order at the current market price.

When everyone does this at the same time, there are more sellers than buyers so prices drop dramatically. However, this presents an opportunity for HFT programs especially when they have similar strategies, meaning they all are doing the same thing, pushing the market in the same direction. Now, the HFT programs forced people to get stopped out, then they bid the market up and buy, which pushes it right back to the prior level.

Take a look at AAPL, RIMM, GOOG, SPY, etc. and you'll see it is all the same pattern.

joe-mccann··on Why SXSW Sucks
It seems that this will be the third time on a reasonable followed site/blog that I have to explain to so many whiners why SXSWi is cool/fun/beneficial: the tech splinter parties/events/hackfests that AREN'T associated with SXSWi. Now granted, to say that there was a "lack of tech" is total horseshit. Web frameworks face-off, server-side JavaScript, CVC not MVC, even the Google hackfest brought out just that: real hackers. And the this list goes on from there...

Moreover, the events/parties with the most DBs (douchebags not databases or decibels) were mainly the ones that were officially associated with SXSWi. Note to anyone especially those trying to find movers and shakers to interview them or simply network: the movers and shakers are NOT at these parties.

You need to check places like the Hotel St. Cecilia, The Highball, the East Side of Austin in general, all within 1-3 miles of the convention center.

Finally, local Austin groups put together some stellar parties/events/hackfests: Austin Rails, Wordpress BBQ, Austin JavaScript Party, etc.

Yes I am a local so I didn't have to pay for flight, hotel, rental car, etc. but what I do have to do is continue to defend the techies of Austin that make SXSWi fun and worthwhile.

BTW, I'll be at the (mt) closeout party tonight at Mohawk. Come say hi, we are friendly in Austin... ;-)

Top-5 in LIQUIDITY PROVIDERS, not necessarily the same as in programatiC/algo trading. Goldman tops the list and anyone that's traded on a prop desk knows how much influence they have on the domestic equities market:

joe-mccann··on Steve Jobs Is Building AppleWorld - And Google's Running Scared
LMAO...here's the key sentence in that article:

Disclosure: Long AAPL

Seriously, how could you possibly have an objective opinion about the proper valuation of arguably one of Apple's biggest competitors, Google.

Moreover, Apple's P/E right now is 33. Let me repeat that. 33!. If the two stocks prices are two switch places, then Apple's P/E sky rockets to an absurd 80. So you should be getting long $AAPL? Hmm, not at these levels...

joe-mccann··on Why App Stores Are Not the Business Model for the 21st Century
Yeah, App store not a viable business model. You're right, some of the biggest players in tech have been wrong for so long: Apple, Google, and now Amazon.

Software engineering has been viable for years. The device is the only thing that is changing. Moreover, the author states the 'web' is the 'app' that works on every platform. The naivety here is palpable thru the page.

How many software titles work on Mac and PC and Linux? Plenty. Write code to one code base? Hardly.

Frameworks like Phonegap and Appcelerator's Titanium allow for some code re-use for mobile apps, but one is essentially utilizing the "web" view on those devices. So if you are really looking for performance you are betting against the phone's JavaScript interpreter to process your accelerometer video game versus the phone's processor itself.

The app store business model should not be one someone banks on, in my opinion, for all their revenue. However, the app stores existence and attraction to businesses should be seen as an opportunity for devs to provide services and expertise for clients WHO WANT/NEED apps. This demand, I don't see falling any time soon...

joe-mccann··on Google Faces Deluge of Nexus One Complaints
I don't cell phones...sorry couldn't help it. ;-)

Honestly, I'll probably keep it along with all the other Android devices (and Apple devices) for debugging and backwards-compatibility and graceful degradation testing on multiple devices.

joe-mccann··on Google Faces Deluge of Nexus One Complaints
Nice work PC World. You've successfully landed more traffic to your site with a misleading headline. A deluge of complaints? Horseshit.

I personally had countless issues ordering the Nexus One on Tuesday and Wednesday as a current T-Mobile customer with the G1. However, the error I kept receiving was on T-Mobile's side. "T-Mobile's servers are busy/non-responsive" something like that...

I ordered it Thursday around Noon CST with custom engraving and received free overnight shipping with no problems whatsoever. I received an email saying the device had shipped 90 minutes later.

Phone arrived yesterday. Charged it. Plugged in Google Account credentials and have had ZERO problems. Currently uploading/syncing a ton of pics I have taken with the Nexus One to my Picasa account, while transferring a 320kbps MP3 file via Bluetooth, with Pandora playing...with not a single hiccup.

In my opinion, one can expect someone to receive LOADS of negative press when they attempt to do something no one else has done, namely, sell smart/super phones directly to the consumer over the web. I think the only thing Google forget was to put the "Beta" badge somewhere on the ordering site...
