jna_sh··on Throughout the rich world, the young are falling out of love with cars
I’m not American nor live in America. But as a resident of cities whose shape pre-dates the car across several dense European countries, I can relate to those fears.
jna_sh··on A Critical Field Guide for Working with Machine Learning Datasets
I love the faux spreadsheet presentation of this guide.
jna_sh··on Throughout the rich world, the young are falling out of love with cars
Cars have always felt more restrictive to me. I don’t want to have to worry about parking or road access or fuel when I’m visiting somewhere.
jna_sh··on Some insects I found inside dried Turkish figs from Trader Joe’s
I think the lack of refrigeration is mostly a convenience for supermarkets and transport, at least in the UK. I don't think I've ever encountered a household that didn't refrigerate their eggs after purchase, but they're almost always on regular shelves at sale.
jna_sh··on Some insects I found inside dried Turkish figs from Trader Joe’s
The major component missing here is why the US washes eggs, which is that they don't vaccinate against salmonella. The places you're observing that store eggs outside a fridge probably all have some kind of poultry vaccination program, for example, the red lion on UK eggs: https://www.egginfo.co.uk/british-lion-eggs
jna_sh··on I analyzed shuffling in a million games of MtG Arena (2020)
The theory I’ve always heard about why the shuffler might be biased is that they’re trying to reduce land flood/screw. Drawing too few or too many lands is a commonly cited cause of frustration with players and if you’re reasonably assuming Arena wants to do all the usual monetised-game things of increasing playtime and MAU whatnot, this conclusion seems one of the first people come to.
jna_sh··on YouTube Addiction
They tell you why they spend so long justifying it as a thing, because people around them said it wasn’t a thing.
jna_sh··on Regulators OK largest dam demolition in history to restore salmon habitat
I'm not knowledgeable in Pacific Salmon, but this is a phenomena seen in lots of species, and has a fairly basic biological explanation. A species can be exposed to individual threats that they can still cope with and adapt to, resulting in little immediate decline. But as more of these threats accumulate, eventually the sum of the whole overwhelms the species, and can lead to a sudden drop.

A steep drop can follow a more gradual decline, as well, due to loss of genetic diversity in the population making the population less able to adapt to another unrelated threat. Check out the Extinction Vortex.

jna_sh··on Ask HN: What is the thing you've built that you regret the most?
This sounds like Caleb Thompson's "Don't Get Distracted" talk.

jna_sh··on Low Energy Chest Fridge
It might be “weird” that this link was submitted to HN, but the purpose of No Tech Magazine is to host things that Low Tech Magazine links to, to ensure the articles don’t suffer link rot.
jna_sh··on Goodbye Zachtronics
Thanks for sharing the interview! Check back in on the end of the show, around 2 hours 10 minutes. I asked him if he intended to keep teaching, and he hedged a little bit but essentially said no.
jna_sh··on Ask HN: How did you find your current job?
Every job I’ve ever had has been because of hackathons. Either being directly approached by a sponsor at a hackathon, or being remembered by someone involved with the hackathon after the fact. I briefly did a stint in a wildlife conservation NGO and even that came about because I had helped out at a hackathon at a zoo once.

I don’t think hackathons are particularly unique, I’d abstract this to “be visible and known in your tech community”.

jna_sh··on LeekWars, program your AI to destroy your leek enemies
You can play Battlesnake (https://Battlesnake.com) in anything, Rust is quite popular.
jna_sh··on Hackers claim to have breached Okta systems
GitHub used Okta, it’s been a while so possibly replaced, but one example.
jna_sh··on Battlesnake raises $1.5M to turn coding into competition
If you want to get a feel for what building a Battlesnake is like, would definitely recommend the Thursday Twitch shows!

This one was a lot of fun, where penelope_zone (of rubyfmt/Stripe/Ruby Central fame) built a Battlesnake in Bash: https://www.twitch.tv/battlesnakeofficial/v/1150727860?sr=a&...

Disclaimer: I host one of the recurring segments on the Battlesnake Twitch

jna_sh··on For the first time in history, St Andrews outranks Oxbridge
Apologies, a good nitpick! Particularly since the thread is for St Andrews so the Scottish Highers are definitely worth mentioning :)

The international baccalaureate is also becoming more widely available.

jna_sh··on For the first time in history, St Andrews outranks Oxbridge
Not necessarily, vocational qualifications in the U.K. (the NVQ) are often available at sixth-form colleges, but they will also teach the non-vocational A-level qualifications too. I don’t think there’s any consistency to what mix of vocational vs non-vocational certificate you can expect at an institution based on use of the word college.
jna_sh··on For the first time in history, St Andrews outranks Oxbridge
The two most common usages of “college” in UK education are:

  - pre-university education for 16-18 year olds. This is where you complete qualifications for university entry, such as A Levels, Scottish Highers, or the IB, as well as more vocationally aligned qualifications like BTEC or NVQ. This stage of education used to be optional but recently became compulsory.
  - institutions within a larger university umbrella. This includes the colleges of Oxford, Cambridge and Durham. For example, Jesus College of the University of Oxford or Magdalene College of the University of Cambridge. Very few UK universities use a college system, it is mostly a historical legacy seen in very old universities.
Another reply mentions Imperial College London: many of the London universities are colleges of the University of London, but I think this system is mostly so they can share/issue one University of London degree, and that they don’t have the same degree of centralised administration that the Oxbridge college system does.

EDIT: updated to reflect that A levels aren’t the only pre-university qualification in the UK

jna_sh··on How to teach programming and other things (2019) [video]
The speaker is a researcher on programming education at the University of Leiden. If you’re interested in this talk, would definitely recommend checking out her programming language, Hedy (hedycode.com), or her new book, The Programmer’s Brain https://www.manning.com/books/the-programmers-brain
jna_sh··on New mystery AWS product ‘Infinidash’ goes viral despite being entirely fictional
Hi! I’m the tweeter quoted in this article. Love the description of lifelong learning turned lifelong marketing, that is a much more eloquent way to capture the frustration than I managed.

Totally agreed on the staggering nature of the response, it’s been a real weird couple of days. Great to see some people playing along in the comments too ;)

jna_sh··on Show HN: Yare.io – game where you control units with JavaScript

jna_sh··on How to track and display profile views on GitHub
Neat, thanks!
jna_sh··on How to track and display profile views on GitHub
Ah gotcha, sorry, totally missed that!
jna_sh··on How to track and display profile views on GitHub
This is interesting because this didn't used to be possible from a repository's readme, I believe, because linked images would be cached and served from GitHub's CDN. I wonder what's changed (if it indeed has)
jna_sh··on Has GitHub been down more since its acquisition by Microsoft?
A number of the staff who left GitHub in protest of the ICE contract were senior SRE. I wonder if the data says anything about the dates of their departures...
jna_sh··on Show HN: A small bootstrapped independent VPN company in the Netherlands
I get why though. I frequently get blank looks from non-Europeans when I say I live in the Netherlands, and have to add a reluctant "Holland."
jna_sh··on GitHub Student Developer Pack
The reality is it’s a company giving offerings away for free. Do the people in these companies who care about education wish _everyone_ who needed to learn could have it for free? Of course. But welcome to businesses. The definition of “student” is as it is because it’s a verifiable segment. Self learners are, unfortunately, not.
jna_sh··on GitHub Student Developer Pack
Teachers don’t qualify, but GitHub Education offer teachers GitHub Pro for their personal account, and GitHub Teams for organisations they use to teach their students. More here: https://help.github.com/en/github/teaching-and-learning-with...

Disclaimer: ex-GitHub, used to work on the education program

jna_sh··on GitHub and US Government Developers
This internal letter was leaked last night on Twitter, via Fight for the Future. It seems putting it on the official GitHub blog is a response to that leak: https://twitter.com/evan_greer/status/1181745056698572802
jna_sh··on Enso OS: A simple operating system for everyone, able run on any machine
> they all seem to ignore the irony that someone savvy enough to discover an obscure distro might not need everything to be a user friendly macOS-esque experience.

Sure, I’m technically capable of doing all this myself. I don’t need the macOS-esque user friendliness. But I also don’t need takeaway food. But sometimes, home cooking is just a chore, yknow?
