jmercouris··on In defense of flat earthers (2020)
I had a very similar experience in my school in the Chicago suburbs. I don’t know how it is elsewhere.
jmercouris··on €2.6M spent for a book at auction, believed they would own the IP
Could you please expand upon how it was like the 'discovery of fire'? There are many ways to interpret this, and I'm not certain I know what you are saying.
jmercouris··on What is actually a heretical view?
I don’t believe the question is actually answered! Just a list of heretical views and why they may be considered heretical. Fascinating article.
jmercouris··on Poor man's VPN (pay for only what you need)
Or you could just use sshuttle with far less steps: https://github.com/sshuttle/sshuttle
jmercouris··on Code Review Manners
I would like to add to this list: be clear in your writing. If there has to be a back and forth for your comments to be understood, you are not writing clearly enough!
jmercouris··on The Pragmatic Pragmatic Programmer
I really don’t like these trends of telling people what to do. Your opinion is fine, but I find it rude to command someone to do something. “Delete this” just reeks of arrogance and faux dominance.
jmercouris··on Moveable barrier for improving traffic capacity
These are an interesting idea, in Chicago we have something similar on 90/94 there are more lanes on the different highway directions depending on the time of day. It’s actually really smart for increasing utilization.
jmercouris··on TikTok trend that makes teens believe they have serious mental disorders
I believe this trend has existed on different platforms for a long time. I remember in the 90s when it was trendy to have OCD or to be depressed. Part of being young seems to be finding a way to differentiate yourself and be special as is emphasized by our culture.
jmercouris··on Tokyo police lose 2 floppy disks containing info on public housing applicants
I see. I lived almost a decade in Berlin, and both in west and east. I cannot say enough good things about the trains. However I will not say they are always on time!
jmercouris··on How Much Does Universal Pay J.K. Rowling for the Harry Potter Theme Park Rights?
Unfortunately the question the title posits is never answered. Nonetheless it is a most interesting read. Seems to be a stiff deal for the theme park!
jmercouris··on Fuck Off Google
Their mission petered out because it was founded upon a null conclusion. There was no greater purpose to strive for.
jmercouris··on Tokyo police lose 2 floppy disks containing info on public housing applicants
Did you and I live in the same Berlin??? The S Bahn is literally always late.
jmercouris··on Glibc is still not Y2038 compliant by default
I think glibc is right to not change the defaults out from under the feet of users. “ This is the worst possible way to do this. Consider libraries: what if a dependency is built with -D_TIME_BITS=64, and another dependency is built without, and they need to exchange struct timespec or similar with each other? ” - this argument makes no sense to me. If you need new features and new values update your flags rather than breaking any program that depends on your CLI API
jmercouris··on Ask HN: Content or book suggestions to overcome avoidant personality disorder?
Better to get correct advice from a therapist, than to begin in the wrong direction via something you don't yet understand. Have patience, and learn as much as you can from professionals. Explore all topics with them and validate your understanding. Don't count strictly on yourself. Good luck.
jmercouris··on Ask HN: Why dont operating systems make sounds anymore
Let me ask the opposite question. Why did operating systems make any sounds? Is the rationale for them making sounds still valid? What information does it provide you that isn't otherwise obvious?
jmercouris··on Ask HN: Are we entering a 0-click era?
Security is more than just the software and hardware you are running. It also the strategies you employ, which you've hinted at. You can minimize your risk exposure by taking certain key steps:

1. hardware switches for microphones, cameras

2. restrict when and what you connect to on your devices

3. using air gapped devices when necessary

4. use different devices for different activities

the list of course goes on and on. it depends on what your security needs are. Security does not end with software and hardware mitigation, it only begins there.

jmercouris··on Finnish Man Blows Up Tesla Car Instead of Replacing Battery
Why did you mention which car you have? I don’t see the relevance.
jmercouris··on Why did Soviet citizens buy things for a lifetime?
No, it isn’t, I’m just saying what this piece is about
jmercouris··on Why did Soviet citizens buy things for a lifetime?
Sounds like survivorship bias and some sort of superiority over capitalism’s wastefulness hitpiece
jmercouris··on Hunting Tech Debt via Org Charts
What does this mean? Can you please rephrase?
jmercouris··on Show HN: Interpretable Text Classification and Clustering in the Browser
We’ve had this feature in Nyxt for over a year :-)

https://nyxt.atlas.engineer/article/dbscan.org

It really does feel like a super power!

jmercouris··on Klog retrospective: One year into my open-source time tracking project
I see, thank you for the explanation.

Comparison with TimeWarrior? It seems to satisfy all of your constraints.

jmercouris··on They Say She Rigged a Homecoming Queen Contest. She Faces Decades Behind Bars
This is an absolutely insane story. 124 votes in 20 minutes does /seem/ impossible for someone to pull off via manual input entry.
jmercouris··on [dead]
Actually we do not know that, the title is misleading.
jmercouris··on Ask HN: What Niche Language to Learn?
You could learn Zig, or Rust, or Lisp. There are many :-)
jmercouris··on Why Lisp?
Sure, here’s our personal example: https://github.com/atlas-engineer/nyxt
jmercouris··on Chaining, or why you should stop returning void (2012)
It exists in Lisp, even before C.
jmercouris··on Old towns eager for new blood sell Italy homes for $1
Realtors exist in Greece, I’m not sure where you got your information that they do not.
jmercouris··on Chicago creates one of the nation’s largest ‘guaranteed basic income’ programs
So unfortunate that some things move forward simply due to inertia. Eventually this inertia will be transferred as energy to other things, but it can be frustrating waiting for the ball to stop rolling!
