jmelloy··on Summary of the Amazon S3 Service Disruption
I assume if they were unauthorized they would be fired, but since they were authorized shit happens.

"Fire you? I just spent $10 million training you!"

jmelloy··on Wearable Fitness Devices Don’t Seem to Make You More Fit
You can't outrun your mouth.

It's much easier to control for your diet than exercise it away, because unless you're working out for 8-10 hours a day, you won't burn more than a few hundred calories. That's one shake at McDonald's or Starbucks dessert.

jmelloy··on Netflix Earnings Are Driven by Investment in Original Content
The evolution of Netflix is impressive. It became an 'international' company when it opened up the streaming service to Canada in 2010, and now they operate in over 190 countries.
jmelloy··on Uber ordered to stop self-driving vehicle service in San Francisco
What? There were self-driving vehicles in San Francisco? I'll spend the next hour of my life getting up to speed with this. Good stuff!
jmelloy··on Amazon’s Ambition to Compete Directly with UPS and FedEx
We are still talking about Amazon here.
jmelloy··on US ready to 'hand over' the internet's naming system
.ltd is available now
jmelloy··on Apple announces iOS 10
They should just replace the long press with it. The problem is it's only on the 6S models, and the difference between 3d touch and a long press is a delicate balance.

Replace the long press, and the experience degrades nicely on older hardware.

jmelloy··on Automattic Purchases .blog TLD for $19M
Who do you think owns .com? All the new ones, and some of the country codes, are companies.

You can't just go out tomorrow and buy a TLD - there's a whole process to prove you have the technical capabilities and financial capital to run the operation.

jmelloy··on France to build 1000 km of roads with solar panels
To be fair, that was the fourth solar farm planned to be built juuuust far enough outside the town that they weren't getting paid for it or able to use the electricity generated.
jmelloy··on In search of the perfect URL validation regex
There's also a proposal in front of ICANN to allow dotless domains, eg http://pizza
jmelloy··on Django 1.8 and Python 3: Complex app tutorial, end-to-end
There's only one settings file, which is defined in the first/main app.
jmelloy··on JSON in URLs
I find those URLs massively ugly.
jmelloy··on Lars Andersen: a new level of archery [video]
Every arrow fired on Arrow is CGI due to crew and actor safety.
jmelloy··on Neal Stephenson Joins Magic Leap
I happily kickstarted it, but I had no belief it would actually deliver. $500k is 5 software devs or artists for a year. That's not very much money for a 3D game.
jmelloy··on Graph everything with Graphite
It was originally written and open sourced by Chris Davis of Orbitz. Presumably he either moved on to a new job, got bored with it, or it met his original design goals so he didn't feel the need to completely rewrite the backend just because the internet asked him to.
jmelloy··on Graph everything with Graphite
Graphite's rendering functions are its real beauty. I looked at both OpenTSDB and InfluxDB as replacements, and neither have anything close to the power of Graphite's rendering.

I haven't been thrilled with grafana as a dashboard for OpenTSDB, either. I hadn't seen Cyanite.

jmelloy··on A Eulogy for RadioShack
Two Christmases in a row, I got a radio-controlled car from Radio Shack. Two years in a row, that car was dead by New Year's. I never asked for one again.
jmelloy··on Monkey Island – Insult Swordfighting Game
"I hope you learned to stop picking your nose."
jmelloy··on Microsoft Band
The main reason I bought a garmin vivofit is that the battery lasts a year.
jmelloy··on Amazon Fire TV Stick
I have a Chromecast sitting at my house that we won in a contest, and we haven't bothered to pull it out of the box because nobody can tell me what it does beyond "Less functional AirPlay for Chrome."
jmelloy··on The Fire Phone Is Officially a Failure
This isn't 2007, though. They were competing against 3 established brands and offering a more restricted product with no differentiators.

Microsoft is having enough problems convincing people that a 3rd place app store is worth developing for, how was Amazon supposed to get in?

jmelloy··on Y U NO commit??
We've adopted the "every feature a branch" idea from git-flow. It feels silly to make a branch that is a 3 line typo fix, but does make it nice and clean to switch between them as your working.
jmelloy··on Poll: Did you “drop Dropbox”?
I got pissed off at dropbox because they keep trying to suck my entire Photo library into it, and the client crashes a lot, but I haven't gotten rid of them yet. It's only a matter of time, though.
jmelloy··on Entitlement issues (2009)
This blog post has become so famous I just assumed the title was "GRRM is not your bitch."
jmelloy··on Developer inequality and the technical debt crisis
First page of google for Jonathan Edwards produces a 17th century philosopher and a singer. Adding "Jonathan Edwards programming" produces Subtext, which has a UI straight out of 1994 and no releases. So ... He's a not terribly well known academic yawning about how programming needs to be more academic?

Honestly, I have no idea who he is.

jmelloy··on Pierre Sprey on the F-35 [video]
Anybody with current experience can likely not talk about it, due to security clearance issues.
jmelloy··on The Fuel Cell For Home
I've been keeping a casual eye on them -- they seem to be selling to big customers, but at $750k apiece. They're also the size of a bike shed, and generate 100 kW.

This is the size of a stack of CDs, and generates 1 kW. (Which is enough for lights, tv, etc, but generally not the stove.)

jmelloy··on 0xDBE: JetBrains IDE for DBAs and SQL developers
I wonder how this handles version control of schemas. I've been really impressed with PyCharm, so I trust these guys.

At work we're trying to integrate [http://www.red-gate.com/]'s SQL Source Control plugin, which is a huge pain. They prefer too much autodiscovery, which is just too finicky.

jmelloy··on Apple Confirms Its $3 Billion Deal for Beats Electronics
I don't think anybody realistically considers a CD "digital".
jmelloy··on Results of the GitHub Investigation
They're saying that the investigative team brought in to determine if there was anything they could be sued over found no evidence/email trail for the specific things that they could get sued over.

"We didn't find an email trail that could lead to a lawsuit, and the co-founder in question immediately resigned" is a very far cry from "Everything she said was a lie."
