jmartinpetersen··on Denmarks shuts down all schools, daycare facilities, universities, highschools
Do you mean that they do not catch the virus or that they do not have any severe symptoms but can still transmit?
jmartinpetersen··on Alphabet earnings show Google Cloud on $10B run rate
What are you trying to decide based on their cloud platform revenue? I'm genuinely curious as to why it matters if they are huge or actually the largest on the planet.
jmartinpetersen··on US 50 states redrawn as equal population (2012)
There's links for most of the names at the bottom.

Firelands are much older than that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firelands

jmartinpetersen··on Adversarial design printed on a shirt to fool object recognition algorithms
You can fool all the AIs some of the time, and some of the AIs all the time, but you cannot fool all the AIs all the time.
jmartinpetersen··on Hundreds of dogs in Norway hit by mystery illness
The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration are quoted on speculating that it may be parvovirus, as it seems to fit the symptoms. I have seen no further reporting or repudiation on that possibility, though.

Or ... maybe it's lupus?

jmartinpetersen··on Ask HN: What's the best setup for ad blocking and tracker blocking?
I'm not that paranoid and I don't really care about blocking ads, just the most egregious tracking. So I use Disconnect and rarely see ads or "please disable your ad blocker", and when I do see ads, I just shrug it off.

I don't know how efficient it is for tracking, but at least I have the moral high ground of going after blocking tracking, not ads in general ...

jmartinpetersen··on Software Architecture Guide
Robert Martin seems to cherry pick stats and trends and whatever that fits his world view. In Clean Architecture he cites a study with N=1 as proof TDD works. I have no hope for him.
jmartinpetersen··on Down the Rabbit-Hole
"I decided it would be worth it to spend a couple of weeks reverse engineering CTF to understand the security properties."

Just, wow, that he gets to spend a couple of weeks on stuff like that.

jmartinpetersen··on Speed matters: Why working quickly is more important than it seems (2015)
I don't know if that's why, but HN is usually way faster than the linked sites, and I more often than not end up browsing the comments instead of the intended content.
jmartinpetersen··on Ventilen, a Danish organization to address loneliness in young people
I would assume that it's rather difficult to help loneliness in isolated individuals?
jmartinpetersen··on Ventilen, a Danish organization to address loneliness in young people

Ventilen, or “friend to one” in Danish,
That's an unusual translation. A more obvious would be "valve" or just "vent".

- Edit after coffee: "Ven til en" actually means "friend of one". Amazing how faulty pattern recognition can lead you astray.

jmartinpetersen··on Apple Cancels Danish Data Center
They have now pulled out of the site in Aabenraa, while their other site in Viborg has apparently been dormant for a couple of months.
jmartinpetersen··on The Z3 Theorem Prover
I seem to have somehow forgotten or missed the fact that it was MIT re-licensed a couple of years ago, instead of the previous "no commercial use" stuff. Thanks for the submission!
jmartinpetersen··on The shittiest project I ever worked on (2013)
It's absolutely true, and while he could have made a mockup showing how it would look for someone with a zip code in eg. Dallas, getting through the bureaucratic hoops to actually get feed back from those who eventually shot it down ... that's just really hard, most places. "We can't show this to customers/users/management, it's not completely done!"

It's a process problem and you can't solve it bottom-up.

You either get used to it and work to the specs, knowing they will change a lot, or you try to get closer to whoever makes the decisions. More often than not, that leads you to another company working on a different problem ...

jmartinpetersen··on The shittiest project I ever worked on (2013)
Thanks for sharing. Good catch at the end. It's easy to forget this as a developer. But usually technically details are just that in the bigger picture - details. They're only important if the bigger picture is somewhat correct.
jmartinpetersen··on .NET 5
As I have gathered from talking to former Microsoft developers and evangelists, vNext is generally embraced to mean "the next great version", maybe primarily for developer centric stuff.

Personally, I've been hearing about MS Build vNext and TFS vNext for the last 8 years, and there's been several releases since then. Maybe that's why I kind of associate it with vaporware, even though that's probably unfair.

What would be a great naming schemes for retro fitting an open standard with a new, open implementation for a subset of the existing framework?

jmartinpetersen··on Out of sight but not invisible: Defeating fileless malware
37. That maybe seems a bit heavy.

Edit: 38 with the image link at the bottom.

jmartinpetersen··on Top programming languages in use 2019
But it all of a sudden had a twelvefold increase - from the levels of Bash and assembly to be as popular as Javascript. Did something happen with Excel macros in Office 2016?
jmartinpetersen··on Top programming languages in use 2019
Can anyone explanation why Visual Basic had a huge '16 comeback?
jmartinpetersen··on Surprisingly little evidence for usual wisdom about teeth
An old acturian at my current job usually tease new developers that they are just like dentists - never satisfied with anyone elses work and always suggesting serious rework that is critically important.
jmartinpetersen··on Everyone’s Income Taxes Should Be Public
For real life experience with this, see reports about Norway, Finland and Sweden. For instance https://www.reuters.com/article/us-panama-tax-nordics-idUSKC... (random Google hit)
jmartinpetersen··on Jailbreaking Subaru StarLink
Sure, of course, but requiring a serial connection through a physical cable is still a less useful attack vector than ssh over wifi, which is what I gathered from the grandfather post - but not the article.
jmartinpetersen··on Jailbreaking Subaru StarLink
From what did you conclude this? I read it as if it allowed login over serial for those accounts, he didn't mention ssh in that context.
jmartinpetersen··on Am I the only one seeing the '90s retro theme, with the unicorns and sparkles?
This is where globalisation really hurts. You used to have to hide 24 hours under a rock to avoid it, but with different time zones and all that jazz on the internet, it starts early and ends late.
jmartinpetersen··on A barber shop on wheels that you book via an app
Barbers and female hair dressers offer a service and sell an experience. That's why you get coffee and magazines and all that. And that's why he has a van he drives his tools around in.

Thing is, all you need for the job fits in a bag, and barbers have been mobile forever. Sure, you had to sit on your own chair in your own living room listening to your own stereo. Another bonus is that it's one of those rare trades where you make things disappear instead of creating stuff, so the tax man rarely catches you.

Source: My father did everything hair related for 40 years on multiple continents.

jmartinpetersen··on Which Programming Languages Use the Least Electricity? (2018)
Almost 20 years ago I took courses under a professor who was very into reversible computation. As I recall it was mainly on the language side, though.

Glad that it's still moving, sad that it's at an even slower pace than the "functional/immutable will save the parallellization worries" stuff I encountered in the same period.

jmartinpetersen··on My Twitch Live Coding Setup
Games like XCOM/XCOM2. Specifically, I'm watching a stream of Long War Rebalanced, and it's kinda annoying when you join an hour in.
jmartinpetersen··on My Twitch Live Coding Setup
I see the same difficulties with some games, for instance those that do not lend themselves to a simple score board.

When I join a stream of someone playing a strategy game which also has a tactical layer, you are usually equally clueless as to what is going on. Certainly at the strategic layer but also as to what a good outcome of a tactical encounter is.

I'm not sure how technology can fix this. On the other hand, other spectators can usually pretty easily do this in chat.

jmartinpetersen··on What's next for SemVer
How am I, that by way of misfortune and bad timing, ended up depending on the obscure "feature" added in 1.2.3, to know that upgrading to 1.2.4 will actually break my thing?
jmartinpetersen··on Systemd is bad parsing
The article isn't really about the bug but about the (lack of) quality in the code. Spoiler alert: He doesn't like it.

"This code has no redeeming features. It must be thrown away and rewritten yet again. This time by an experienced programmer who know what error codes mean, how to use asserts properly, and most of all, who has experience at network programming."
