jmartinpetersen··on Can LLMs write better code if you keep asking them to “write better code”?
> "As LLMs drastically improve, the generated output becomes more drastically average"

Thanks, that really made it click for me.

jmartinpetersen··on Satya Nadella Says Copilot Will Be as Significant as the PC
In this statement by gabaix, Hacker News reflects on the importance of listening to CEOs endorcing their own products.

(Seriously, what's with the writing in the article? ChatGPT can do better.)

jmartinpetersen··on 7-Zip up to 21.07 on Windows allows privilege escalation and command execution
You need to drag the malicious .7z-file onto the 7Zip Help window. I don't know who is at fault, but that's a pretty weird intrusion vector.
jmartinpetersen··on Ask HN: The book that did it for you in math and/or CS?
"Linear Algebra: Gateway to Mathematic" by Robert Messer. I'm not sure it's particularly great, but it showed me a level of elegance I hadn't seen in CS at that point. So I switched my minor to math and hasn't regretted it.
jmartinpetersen··on Ask HN: Where do you find your sense of purpose working in the private sector?
I work for a company that is owned by and serves pension funds. If I do my job well, it means better retirement savings for nurses, teachers and kindergarden teachers. That's pretty motivating.
jmartinpetersen··on My dishwasher won’t start until I let it update its firmware over the WiFi
Saturday at peek hours 1kWH cost me 4.27 DKK. Six hours later it was at 1.67 DKK. That's $0.4 saved per kWh. We run our dishwasher every day.
jmartinpetersen··on My dishwasher won’t start until I let it update its firmware over the WiFi
Our tariffs for electricity vary by the hour. I don't know how to detect that by voltage?
jmartinpetersen··on My dishwasher won’t start until I let it update its firmware over the WiFi
I wish my dishwasher could automaticly start whenver the price of electricity was low. I can manualle delay it by doing simple math in my head and forecasting prices, but it would be easier and more foolproof if I could script it with IFTTT.
jmartinpetersen··on My dishwasher won’t start until I let it update its firmware over the WiFi
A pretty useful feature would be to start when electricity prices are low.
jmartinpetersen··on Quebec bans unvaccinated from buying groceries at Walmart, Costco
The PM announced a total opening on February 1st in Denmark.

There might be mandated face masks for guests at hospitals and elder care in addition to proof of vaccination or negative tests. At these places only.

All other restrictions are being lifted.

jmartinpetersen··on Design patterns let you apply existing solutions to your code
It starts with the Singleton and vaguely hints that it has some drawbacks. Why start with that, then? And why not flat our recognise that it is understood more as an anti-pattern these days?

I don't get blogs like these. This story has been told a million times with more or less the same content and structure.

jmartinpetersen··on How the .NET Foundation kerfuffle became a brouhaha
It's not to pick on you, but why do people spell it with a capital S? I've seen it in several comments over the years. But their spelling and logo, at least going back to the 80'es, have been "Microsoft". I think they might have been "Micro-Soft" for the first year, but that was 45 years ago.

MicroProse, on the other hand, went with the capital P.

jmartinpetersen··on Samsung seemingly caught swapping components in its 970 Evo Plus SSDs
No, that's a false dichotomy. They could've just made up a new name for it.
jmartinpetersen··on Bacon may disappear in California as pig rules take effect

Our European visitors are important to us.

Really makes you feel important.
jmartinpetersen··on Do we need a Scrum Master forever?
I've had a full time scrum master for, what, 4 months out of 15 years of doing scrum. It made a lot of positive difference to have someone operating on the meta level of the team.
jmartinpetersen··on Crossing an entire country in a straight line
Monaco is the second-smallest country by area in the world; only Vatican City is smaller.
jmartinpetersen··on NSA spying row: Denmark helped US gather data on European officials, says report
Most sovereign States can’t spy on their own population. The NSA gets around this by spying on Germany from Denmark and on Denmark from Germany.

It’s all about plausible deniability. No matter how implausible it is.

The current spin from other countries being outraged begs the question: how are you collaborating with the NSA?

jmartinpetersen··on “Computer science is not about computers”
Seeing as the Danish "CS" degree deliberately[1] wasn't named "Computer Science", but "Datalogi"[2] (which translates rather directly to "Datalogy"), and since it happened in the sixties, I somehow assumed this article would end up mentioning Peter Naur in some way.

jmartinpetersen··on No Cookie for You
How does no 3rd party tracking without consent mean "ad-free"?
jmartinpetersen··on New bike chain claims to be faster, more durable
My nine year old isn't responsible enough to care for a derailleur (let alone park his bike instead of throwing it on the ground), but he can bike to school just fine with his internal hub and 15 % energy loss.
jmartinpetersen··on Fun Yet Effective Meetings
I guess for the author (and most other people who hasn't participated on usenet or the like), email is understood as "person to person communication through email". As in, not something that involves listserv.

It seems like you agree on the principles but have different favourite tools for the solution?

One upside of using a chat'ty tool is that you don't need to discuss top vs bottom posting ...

jmartinpetersen··on Secret gyms and the economics of prohibition
Denmark didn't go all out on masks initially but curbed the pandemic by socially distancing and shutting down early.

Masks are currently not required in public transport across the country, but that changes this Saturday. Up until last week I can count on one hand how many people I have seen wearing masks.

Now that people seem to have forgotten what social distancing means, masks are a useful tool. But if everyone just keeps their distance, they're not a must have.

jmartinpetersen··on In search of 2.11BSD, as originally released
March 1991, it seems.

jmartinpetersen··on Using a self-rewriting README powered by GitHub Actions to track TILs
This is cool stuff. But could someone explain how this is a self-rewriting README? It looks to me like a file updated by a commit hook.
jmartinpetersen··on Open letter from Italy to the international scientific community
Several EU countries have already closed or will be closing their sovereign borders in the next 24 hours. They can do that. They are doing it.
jmartinpetersen··on Potential false-positive rate among the 'asymptomatic infected individuals'
This is somewhat misleading information.

First, the country has NOT been completely shut down. I went shopping today and bought milk, yeast and flour. We didn't need toilet paper, but the store had plenty. All schools and most of the public sector closes down for two weeks on Monday. Some business (like restaurants, movie theaters and fitness gyms) are closing down on their own accord. But you can - if you will - still go shopping for clothes, gardening stuff, electronics and most importantly food.

Second, although the right to forced entry into private property was in the original draft it was removed before vote. Entry still follows the known rules of needing approval by a judge.

You are right, however, that forced testing, forced treatment, forced vaccination (if/when possible) and forced quarantine is mandated as per discretion of the public health authorities.

jmartinpetersen··on Denmarks shuts down all schools, daycare facilities, universities, highschools
The reason for these actions are that they can no longer track the infections.
jmartinpetersen··on Denmarks shuts down all schools, daycare facilities, universities, highschools
They are not public sector and thus not directly affected.
