jjgod··on Xi-Editor Retrospective
What do you mean by “primitives” here?
jjgod··on Text Rendering Hates You
Qt does do gamma correction when it comes to text rendering.
jjgod··on Denial of H1-B visas to India’s largest IT services exporters at all-time high
https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/USCIS/Resources/Re... is pretty good data for 2018.

You can see that non-consultancy firms like Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, Google and Facebook all have approval rates close to 99%.

jjgod··on Microsoft Edge and open source collaboration
> UI is a completely separate implementation and shares nothing

Not completely true, many "model" part is shared with Chromium code (given the liberal license) while "view" part can be different.

jjgod··on Microsoft Edge and open source collaboration
In the past, some Opera employees do have commit access to Blink. When I was working on the content layer of Chromium (and some other parts) as an Opera employee I never had commit access, though I do get bug editing access (which is for triaging bugs).

Overall, it doesn't feel like there is a community at all, it's more like Google deciding everything then tell external contributors as a courtesy. I believe there can be technical influences driven by non-Google contributors but that's pretty rare.

That said, perhaps Microsoft can be an exception if their participation is big enough.

jjgod··on Tesla Third Quarter 2018 Update [pdf]
810 stations in Taiwan. While Tesla built a global network.
jjgod··on Why iPhone Xs performance on JavaScript is so good
Jeff Atwood/DHH’s conclusion regarding Speedometer 2 is not completely true according to Filip Pizło (https://webkit.org/blog/author/fpizlo/): https://twitter.com/filpizlo/status/1049132270773198848

In this case I’d trust Filip more :)

jjgod··on Smelvetica – Helvetica the way it was intended to be
> This project began by pulling the original “Helvetica” font from my system files, and making a copy of it. From there I opened it in FontForge, which is a brilliant open source font editor.

Pretty sure the license won’t allow you to do any modification to the font installed on your system.

jjgod··on The BeOS file system, an OS geek retrospective
Tidbit: Dominic Giampaolo, the creator of BeOS file system, is also behind APFS (he gave a WWDC talk back in 2016: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2016/701/).
jjgod··on Spotify Form F-1
Technically Spotify doesn't use Electron, they use a customized version of CEF (Chromium Embedded Framework):

    $ ls -lh /Applications/Spotify.app/Contents/Frameworks/
    total 0

jjgod··on I think I found a Mac kernel bug?
You might want to run it again in 10.13.4 beta :)
jjgod··on India has a hole where its middle class should be
This feels exactly like China in 1990s.
jjgod··on Goodbye Mozilla
Yup, but the surge of iOS and Android quickly brought that to an end, there is almost no OEM deals at mobile. (Still exists at TV/Set-top boxes, but those are not nearly as popular.)
jjgod··on Goodbye Mozilla
When I was working on Opera, the reasons you stated above were also considered as the reason of the quick shrinkage of Opera’s market share at mobile, which eventually brought Opera to its downfall.

Firefox is at a similar position here because on mobile nobody cares about a browser with slightly more functionalities than the builtin one.

jjgod··on How Norwegian Air Upended Travel With Its Cheap Flights
Or you can fly to ARN then OSL, which can be quicker.

There used to be OAK <-> OSL non-stop until last October but I guess there is not enough people to keep it sustainable.

jjgod··on The Evolution of China's Metro Systems
> There was a mass of security theatre, X-ray machines at the entrances to some (most?) lines but lots of people were just ignoring the attendants and walking quickly passed the machines without having their bags checked.

Yes, that’s the main difference between Beijing and Shanghai’s metro system. In Beijing, there is no way to avoid security check and everyone obeys, while Shanghai didn’t enforce that and everyone learned to ignore that.

Then again, there are people arguing that the security measures in neither systems are very effective.

jjgod··on Uber to Sell China Business to Rival Didi After Losing Billions
Agreed. In Beijing/Shanghai I've always preferred subway to Taxi or ridesharing services, except when it's terribly bad weather and I have to talk over 1km or so, or when I carry tons of luggages.
jjgod··on Why Some Cuisines Are More Expensive Than Others
Which is not really surprising as West Coast and NYC are where most of the Chinese immigrants live.
jjgod··on Cashless Britain advances as contactless and debit cards thrive
As someone who lived in Norway in the past few years, I have always wondered why the local banks aren't pushing more for standard contactless payment like [1] instead they developed several competing QR code based solutions like Vipps [2], mCASH [3] and MobilePay [4].

Since I recently moved back to China, I noticed that the mobile payment war has mostly settled, Alipay [5] and WeChat Pay [6] split the marketshare while Apple Pay and Samsung Pay tries to increase their influence with partnerships with UnionPay [7], the national banking union of China.

It would be interesting to know the stories from other countries.

jjgod··on Chinese Tech Group Led by Qihoo 360 Bids $1.2B for Browser Maker Opera
Trolltech (now the Qt Company) did manage to maintain its staff across a few acquisitions and split, some of the most senior staff still remains active at the company.

I'd rather say this is not just Opera side has moved on, many people left Opera before the several rounds of layoffs, and some choose not to stay even when they are offered a new position (myself included).

jjgod··on “Two days ago the police came to me and wanted me to stop working on this”
SSH tunnel is just too easy for the GFW to detect, it's so unstable that you cannot even browse the web with it.

Yes, setting up a VPS provider would be the most common way. There are Shadowsocks implementations that supports multiple users so that more than one person can use it simultaneously. There are also commercial solutions for Shadowsocks that you can just purchase an account instead of setting up your own server.

jjgod··on Map Showing Ratio of Median Software Engineer Pay to GDP/Cap for 50 Countries
Although Norway does have high GDP per capita, http://www.bloomberg.com/visual-data/best-and-worst/highest-... said 99,574 USD is Average annual income. That's unfortunately not true according to http://ssb.no/en/arbeid-og-lonn/statistikker/lonnansatt/aar/..., where average annual earnings last year for all sectors is 489200 NOK, i.e. 77824 USD. (Meanwhile, the earnings of programmers, according to http://ssb.no/en/arbeid-og-lonn/statistikker/lonnikt/aar/201..., is 52900 * 12 NOK = 101021 USD.)

It's kind of unfair to compare annual earnings of programmers directly to GDP per capita. If you actually compare it with the annual earnings of all sectors, the ratio for Norway is close to 1.3.
