jiri··on Zed: SSH Remoting Is Here
Is somewhere a comparison of Zed to Visual Studio Code?
jiri··on Australia/Lord_Howe is the weirdest timezone
Antarctica/Troll is not that weird. Really they use just two times: Cape Town time during short summer and Norway time otherwise. Unfortunately, Norway time happens to have DST ;-)
jiri··on Smarter Than 'Ctrl+F': Linking Directly to Web Page Content
It would be nice to have similar feature like this, but to highlight rectangle (instead of text) on the page to focus viewer on some specific area. I send screenshots with highlight quite often.
jiri··on Horizontal running inside circular walls of Moon settlements
Actually no. In the movie, there is already gravity present in the hub - generated by rotating this large cylindrical hub. Running in such hub would increase gravity slightly but no running is needed at all! Just being in such hub is comparable to running in cylinder mentioned in the paper.

Running in small (10m) diameter cylinder increase gravity significantly without need to spin the cylinder.

Anyway to minimize effects of Coriolis force in spinning cylinder, I think that the size of the cylinder would be significantly larger than the size in the movie.

jiri··on Productivity has grown faster in Western Europe than in America
So the word "diverse" is another word for "not white"? Is this a subtle way to state that "non-white" has big effect for overall productivity?
jiri··on Language model comparison: Can I take ducks home from the park?
Little, insightful and funny comparison of 16 queries and 6 language models (ChatGPT4, GPT4, Claude-2-100k, Llama-2-70b, PaLM, Pi).
jiri··on Venus is not Earth’s closest neighbor (2019) [pdf]
You can use delta-v, so the closest is the distance rocket use the least fuel/mass. It is a very good measure how easily to get to that destination in space.
jiri··on Dropbox telemetry can't be disabled
One can install and use nextcloud. You get similar client and similar experience. You need to care about your data and server though.
jiri··on Shrinkflation, SanDisk Style
Situation is really messed up.

I understand that 16GiB (16*2e30 bytes) chip is present (delivered to user), but some of it is broken and not available (industry standard). Therefore capacity is less than 16GiB. Also I believe that there is a threshold, that manufacturer is using to throw away chip that are too broken to be sold. Ok so far.

So proper declared capacity should be threshold value (minimum) or threshold to maximum value declared range. I understand that this proper capacity is not very nice round number.

Problem has past: Around 2000, manufacturers started using GB (10e9) instead of GiB (2e30) that gives them some margin (7%) for chip defects. Later margin was not enough, so they started using more misleading specs like this. It seems that margin is at least 10% nowadays instead of <7% in the past.

Personally, I would be satisfied with stated margin size (like 7%, 10%, 12% etc) to maximum capacity, f.e. "USB flash drive 16GB max capacity, at least 90% usable."

jiri··on Astronautilia
I'd guess that some family member like son Jan Pinkava https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0684342/ or grandchildren contributed.
jiri··on My coffee maker just makes coffee
Yes! I have few of them and they are repairable as well (for ok price). They last for many years.
jiri··on The risk of orbital debris and one cheap way to mitigate it
I did not find a way how to get rid of orbital debris in the article.
jiri··on Don’t think to write, write to think
I agree, I even know people who want to discuss something, but my role is not to respond too much, just nod or acknowledge things from time to time and primary to listen as their thought gets more clarified by the moment they said them aloud ... :-)
jiri··on The end of the manual transmission is near?
In my Land Rover, everything is very smooth with automatic transmission. I can switch to manual mode but it seems so unnecessary as I can hardly make car goes smoother than with default automatic mode. I think that plenty of power and superb automatic transmission make the difference. Sure for budget cars that lacks power, manual transmission is preferable.
jiri··on The end of the manual transmission is near?
In large SUV with powerful engine, modern automatic transmission like ZF 8speed surely have better fuel economy than scenario adequate manual transmission.
jiri··on The end of the manual transmission is near?
I got manual transmission in my alfa romeo and it behaves the same as automatic regarding uphill start.
jiri··on Prometheus: Fuel from the Air
I believe that we do not produce enough of the bio waste, it has very low energy density.
jiri··on Using grape harvest dates to estimate summer temperature over 650 years
It is cultural thing (claret/clairet/clairette). Yes, in France it is light-colored wine but english speaking people use the word for very dark wine. In my country, clairet is usually (almost) white wine made of dark wine grapes.
jiri··on Does a compiler use all x86 instructions? (2016)
Article is interesting but short. It is pretty interesting question, but I am still missing the answer for it! (Probably: It does not use all instructions.)
jiri··on An illustrated guide to plastic straws (2021)
I think that problem is not that America can't recyle but that nobody CAN recycle. Making new plastic is so cheap and superior to recycling, it does not make sense to recycle in general.

We should try to use more easily recyclable materials (steel, aluminium?) for some stuff we made of plastic now (bottles? car parts? ... ) but it cost a lot more. Try to compary stainless steel straw and plastic straw :-(

jiri··on Why is selling software so weird?
I agree but I am thinking this might be result of "being able to charge customer" approach. This model may be easiest way to charge every customer instead of haggle with customers with pay for base software which price is (f.e. wordpress) or often quickly falls to zero. More optimal way to create such software would be without customisations, but you cant do that cause you cant charge enough.
jiri··on The next Google
Thats basicaly current situation but we dont use "trust" word to describe it but we use "follow" word
jiri··on I don't believe in long-term thinking
Deep thoughts about thinking long-term.
jiri··on Start Self Hosting
I like the Picasa example. I am stuck with just looking for Picasa (ofcourse with sharing and cloud stuff) self-hosted alternative :-(
jiri··on Directly converting CO2 into a gasoline fuel (2017)
stored hydrocarbons are way more easy to handle than stored h2. On top of that, h2 is hard to contain, it can leak everywhere.
jiri··on Directly converting CO2 into a gasoline fuel (2017)
> .. you would synthesize methane or 1-butanol, dimethyl ether or some other single-entity fuel ...

I agree that simple fuels makes more sense to synthesize. Methane is simple, but way more difficult to handle than gasoline. 1-butanol and other liquids would be great, but it is not so easy to produce in scale yet, I believe.

jiri··on Chatbots: Still dumb after all these years
Yeah, thats funny. I work in the speech synthesis domain, and you can guess what kind of texts users are choosing most to generate some speech ;-)
jiri··on Underrated Reasons to Be Thankful
Wow, this seems like our society needs to control this ratio in the future! We can have more peaceful society if we reduce "men count" to keep ratio above 1:1.1 (male:female) :-)
jiri··on QOI: Lossless Image Compression in O(n) Time
This code is nice for RGB, but what about YUV420 format? There should be even more efficient way to store image in YUV420 (takes half bytes than RGB 888), and most images (JPEGs, direct cameras output in Android etc) are already in YUV420. I wonder if auther has tried YUV420 already and failed for any reason ...
jiri··on “Does induced demand apply to bike lanes?” and other questions
I think that this cannot be solved by "educating drivers".

Physical separation is needed for lanes with radically different speeds. Today, sidewalks (4 kmph) are separated from cars (40+ kmph). Because of demand of people traveling around 20 kmph, we need another separated lane for bikes and other e-mobility crowd that is able to move approx. in range of 10-30 kmph. Because of safety new lane must be physically separated.

Also, there should be wise to set some speed limit for these lanes, like 30 kmph, for cases when lane is used by hi-powered e-mobility vehicles.

In theory, parts of town where car speed is so limited to speed of bikes (25 kmph?), separation in many cases disappear. Nobody wanna be driving in such speed anyway.
