jimcsharp··on Ask HN: How do you not take criticism of your work personally?
I don't see what I do as "my work" and I assume my team is just earnestly trying to get our projects done. I'm not naive - I know some personalities like jockeying for career capital and all that but it's not constructive to dwell on.
jimcsharp··on Microsoft 365 Copilot – your copilot for work
Sounds good.

Cheers.

jimcsharp··on Your Organization should run its own Mastodon server
Your brand will have lost 3 years of opportunity to build up its footprint on an alternative - for whatever that's worth.
jimcsharp··on Ask HN: What piece of code/codebase blew your mind when you saw it?
Not code but I always marvel at the relational databases of creaky Enterprise behemoths - SharePoint, SAP, etc...
jimcsharp··on Ask HN: How did you stop drinking?
The advice for quitting non-problematic drinking is "just stop", so at the point where someone is asking for help I think it's worth taking a bit more seriously.

I also interpreted his timeframe uncharitably closer to: "I haven't drank for two weeks, ignoring all previous data, therefore my pattern is 'i don't drink for weeks at a time'" because that's a trick I play on myself in many scenarios, and in certain states of mind I half believe myself no matter how ridiculous it is.

jimcsharp··on One year on, El Salvador’s Bitcoin experiment has proven a failure
People talk about crypto cycles like they talk about metal cycles and I'm not sure how to distinguish the two (and that's why I'm not invested in either).
jimcsharp··on Investors sue Treasury Department for blacklisting crypto platform Tornado Cash
Privacy - just the general desire to participate in crypto as if it were cash, like originally intended. Right now if you aren't running a miner, you've lost that ability without tumblers.
jimcsharp··on Apple's Business website is blocking Firefox
History repeats itself.
jimcsharp··on Police claims to have fingerprinted computer based on printed document
I wonder how many writers write about word processors when they get writer's block. A bit like devs making dev tools.
jimcsharp··on Selling to the Fortune 500, Government, and Other Lovecraftian Horrors
Can't have the sales guy invent functionality out of thin air without a call.

Oh uh, yeah... XYZ - it totally does that and definitely doesn't function like a prototype.

jimcsharp··on Reading on smartphone affects sigh generation, brain activity, and comprehension
I think the Internet rewired my brain. I find it much more comfortable to read a book using the Kindle app's Continuous Scroll setting.
jimcsharp··on Amazon-Owned Twitch Bans Amazon’s Union-Busting Ads
Do you really think he thinks about it like that? I'm all for systemic change as much as the next person, but c'mon. He's probably full of himself and thinks he's uniquely equipped to direct great works. Just like Gates in that Netflix series.
jimcsharp··on I'm the high QA guy. Let me test your website
Heads up, I get a page titled "Divya's Page Landing Tests ..." When I reach your website through Google ads.

Very cool though. I would have loved this for my grandfather when he was still going places a few years ago.

jimcsharp··on My Third Year as a Solo Developer
>scratch a relatives itch

I count myself extremely lucky to have found an 'ideas guy' (and people person, and bookkeeper, money raiser, etc etc...) who came out of the world of the 90s and 2000's where he'd fly around the world implementing copies of high touch software.

From day 1 his vision was clear, we had an in-house subject matter expert, and the customers were there when our SaaS was ready.

jimcsharp··on 70TB of Parler users’ messages, videos, and posts leaked by security researchers
Everywhere I go, I feel like I have free speech by default. I suppose it's my privilege that I feel like that, but I digress. When free speech is explicitly advertised, it smells.
jimcsharp··on A group of Google workers have announced plans to unionize
I would liken unions to corporations rather than cartels.
jimcsharp··on FreeYourMusic lets users migrate their playlists off Spotify
I can only assume that was an aggressive answer to "what if their playlist is, like, REALLY big?"
jimcsharp··on FreeYourMusic lets users migrate their playlists off Spotify
You can get a pretty good csv dump of your play music profile through Google's general data export tool. Their migration to YouTube music is a good opportunity to see what else is out there. I'm leaning towards prime music, since they're a buck cheaper if you have prime (who doesn't?)
jimcsharp··on Teens' anxiety levels dropped during pandemic, study finds
Do you think what makes you interested in [topic] now would've been relevant when you were a child?

If I'm being honest with myself, my answer is probably no. "If only they taught _" for me, can be boiled down to "If only I was 30 in grade school"

jimcsharp··on Equal Access: Automated accessibility checker for web projects
Red on white is almost indistinguishable to me from black on white. If you're trying to use red to indicate a state, it fails on me and I'm sure many others.
jimcsharp··on The Office Is Dead
Given equal distribution of both groups, the misery should equalize and it'd be a net win for corporate profit and the environment.
jimcsharp··on What happened to Mint?
YNABaaS brings automatic integrations to the table and the 'sync' story is, obviously, much easier since it doesn't involve Dropbox. That's all I noticed. I did a trial and just was not impressed. In my opinion, using the SaaS version when you own the desktop software should get you a charity write-off.
jimcsharp··on Please make your products work with URLs
I mean it's dramatic irony if they don't realize they're breaking one web 1.0 thing while grousing about another.
jimcsharp··on Ohio bill would allow students to be scientifically wrong due to religion
If I were FIRE I would probably spend all of my time going to court for stuff like this. I'm surprised there's not at least 1 rich person dedicated to being a righteous shit disturber.
jimcsharp··on Why do companies with unbounded resources still have terrible moderation?
You charge people 10bux. Something Awful is still chugging away on that model.
jimcsharp··on Ask HN: Who Wants to Be Fired?
There are so many of these companies. Lil' mini-SAPs running around, deploying high touch sales teams to large companies and get foisted on whoever's unlucky enough to do work for them...

A place I contract for did this, and then they bought something again 5 years later - still Lego development, but it doesn't do much to hide that it's a thin layer over ASP.NET WebForms so we're getting a bit closer to 2007 anyway.

jimcsharp··on Ask HN: Who Wants to Be Fired?
They're tearing down some walls to fit a few more desks in (the openest of open offices). I've been living like a college student for 10 years now following FIRE blogs, so getting fired wouldn't be completely unwelcome.
jimcsharp··on Apple’s Use of Swift in iOS 13
It's a testament to how crappy my code is, but I find myself having to give it type hints too often, and it'll give up on spitting out warnings if the file gets too large. There's a perverse thought. I can bypass warnings-as-errors by making my code bad enough ;)
jimcsharp··on Open offices are a dead end
Have you tried earbuds v headphones? Anything that sits on / rattles my cartilage is excruciating, but after finding a comfortable pair of earbuds with the big silicone tip on them, I can go a full workday no problem.
jimcsharp··on A patent lawsuit against GNOME
Sounds like that office could use a few opinionated/retired software developers in it.
