jimcsharp··on No Man's Sky's update introduces billions of new stars, planets, and more
Seeing as much of a virtual planet as possible costs $60 and it uses the same energy that isn't being used because the other thing costs thousands of dollars.
jimcsharp··on Ask HN: How do you work with people who are "not quite smart"?
I usually just explain things again, and again, and document, and coach, and the project gets a bit slower, and the world doesn't end. Maybe I'm super dumb though - nobody tell me.
jimcsharp··on Who died and left the US $7B?
My hunch is that taxes are the most efficient 'charity', even with the bloat, and everyone's too busy sniffing farts in their corner to see it.
jimcsharp··on Keep uBlock Origin in Chrome for another year by enabling Enterprise policy
I've been running ad blockers for 15 years now at least, but I seem to recall really annoying pop-ups being a part of Internet advertising too, and they happen more than once per boot.
jimcsharp··on Google Pixel 9 Pro
I can't record calls but Google can? Gross.
jimcsharp··on Australia starts peanut allergy treatment for babies
I read at one point that my oral allergy syndrome, my mild reaction to apples and other fruits, tends to be correlated with hay fever. It doesn't seem unreasonable for something similar to be afoot with peanuts.
jimcsharp··on Paramount Wipes South Park, Daily Show Clips, and More from Websites
Very clever. Keep the highest quality files out of the hands of those grubby pirates. Then the customers will have no choice but to subscribe so they can watch the content in 720p.
jimcsharp··on Don't Use Iperf3 on Windows
To make just a bunch of money.
jimcsharp··on Porn restrictions are leading to a VPN boom
Surely it's overkill to pay for a whole month of constant vpn use. You could cook something up that provides access for a short session aaand we've circled back to dialers.
jimcsharp··on Flowers for Algernon (1965) [pdf]
Performing formalized risk assessments can provide you with insights about a risk you're thinking about taking. I think it helped me take the right risks and leave the workforce early.

Emotionally? Just* ignore them and pursue the thing that pays you the most. It's boring and it's unhealthy and it's hard and it's not romantic.

jimcsharp··on German credit agency earns millions through unlawful customer manipulation
My neighbors suck less when they're warm, full, and healthy. How do the anti tax folks get past that hurdle? I'm trying to live my most evil life here but I'm stuck on very selfishly wanting cool neighbors.
jimcsharp··on Discontinued and unreleased Microsoft peripherals revived by licensing deal
What does it take to make a mouse wheel that doesn't shit the bed, and who's making it? I'd just like to give them some obscene triple price and be done with mice.
jimcsharp··on YouTube slows down video load times when using Firefox
Blockers work with my throw away Google accounts that I use for this and that. So maybe it's restricted further still to very entrenched users.
jimcsharp··on Pixel 8 to have seven years of Android updates
Just a month ago there was news of Google scrapping and not honoring Pixel Pass. You are more generous than I am.
jimcsharp··on CIA bribed its own team to reject lab-leak theory, whistleblower claims
It could be any number of Alex Jones guests.
jimcsharp··on Govt of Canada proposes a 4% Link Tax
I was thinking about that. A site like that wouldn't meet all the tests of eligibility in the bill, but it would probably not meet the eligibility to be copyright exempt for one reason or another. That's as much as I've thought of that.

The thing at issue is not URLs, it is these sites' ability to pull and serve above the fold content. I think that's something the term "link tax" is obfuscating.

jimcsharp··on Is the world finally ready for ethical porn?
At a glance, it's for people whose fetish is watching beautiful women look at their phone.
jimcsharp··on Ask HN: What are some easy ways to earn some side money?
My experience with no code was it was so frustrating to work with that it was preferable to force as much as logic as possible into the database. You get pretty adept at whatever database software you're using, saying "that'd be expensive on this platform - you should settle for <bad UI>", and sessions with platform support because somewhere along the way their platform stopped loading the files it saved.

I do think there needs to be fewer people who crumble when they have to write SQL so maybe it's not all bad.

jimcsharp··on Temple OS Theme for Arch Linux
Would you be this hard-line on a tourettes sufferer with coprolalia? Society seems more ready to make concessions for them. Terry was closer to the illness "uncanny valley" for some, I guess.
jimcsharp··on Actors decry 'existential crisis' over AI-generated ‘synthetic’ actors
>The end state is something like media becomes so easy to create that most of it is only watched by the person who created it and even then probably not even that.

Sounds like how Trek envisioned holodeck programs. Though I guess a lot of those were "what if I could chill with a book character"

jimcsharp··on Disney, Netflix, and more are fighting FTC's 'click to cancel' proposal
Maybe the feature is regionally active in Brazil. Perhaps this particular pattern hasn't been tested in your court. That sucks.
jimcsharp··on Escaping High School
Getting money that way isn't impressive, though. But surely there's some value to someone who's, presumably, intrinsically motivated to attend for some reason. That thing everyone born on the treadmill fakes being.
jimcsharp··on Firefox 115 can remotely disable any extension on any site
The banner is malicious compliance to exhaust and trick people into giving the same tracking privileges the companies previously assumed they had. Sites are welcome to not have the obtrusive cookie banner if they behave themselves with only relevant cookies.

Corporate nightmare.

jimcsharp··on Goodbye, Ozempic
I don't know how takes like this aren't equivalent to telling ADHD sufferers to meditate and create task lists to treat their inability to focus. I think we should get over considering mental issues to be moral failings.
jimcsharp··on Canada plans brain drain of H-1B visa holders, with no-job, no-worries permits
Because you'd have to pay more to attract somebody local who's happy at another company.
jimcsharp··on Sears offered complete houses in large DIY kits
We've got Beaver Homes up north: https://beaverhomesandcottages.ca/Search/Bungalow

As far as I know they include everything.

jimcsharp··on Netflix Canada just got rid of its cheapest ad-free plan without even a heads up
Rotating content.
jimcsharp··on The note Reddit sent to moderators threatening them if they don’t reopen
I'd love to see a poison mod take up their offer then and start the ball rolling on asserting some rights.
jimcsharp··on Twitter is being evicted from its Boulder office over unpaid rent
I'm surprised that I was surprised Musk just goes ahead with unsafe unpermitted monkey patches to his building just like the slumlords in my nowhere town.
jimcsharp··on The Reddit blackout will continue
I checked, and my pre-Reddit Internet experience is still there. The networks are small, on-topic, you recognize people, (we're all 40 now), (all their user databases are on haveibeenpwned). These are all things "subreddit snobs" exalt about their lil' <100k user subreddits. I'm not seeing a super compelling reason not to go back to this mode of Internetting.
