jgamman··on The collapse of the econ PhD job market
Orange Guy is the official mascot for NZ elections.
jgamman··on Computational Astronomy: Exploring the Cosmos with Wolfram
IIRC Wolfram had a blog post about how everything is developing a data/computational angle - he called it Computational X a few years ago now. Fitting they would call this Computational Astronomy.
jgamman··on How to clean chemistry glassware
weird - can't find anything from an australian source about this
jgamman··on How to clean chemistry glassware
niels bohr dissolved the nobel prize medals of colleagues in it and left it on his office shelf during wwII - the committee recast them after the war https://www.aip.org/history-programs/news/invisible-prize
jgamman··on Metals Fuse Together in Space
Awesome - this is the website of the Te Awamutu space centre. "The Space Centre is a privately-funded project run by Dave Owen (Space Dave) and his family." Te Awamutu is a town with ~13,000 people. Live your best life Dave! kia kaha ;-)
jgamman··on 'No-water' hydropower turns England's hills into green and pleasant batteries
it's a nice human scale unit - a bit like some countries still cling to inches as a length measure.
jgamman··on Ask HN: Does anyone use pseudocode in the real world?
yes - i'm not a programmer but i need to translate business rules for my contractors to build. it helps us 'meet in the middle' when discussing abstract things.
jgamman··on Chemist and professor making the 'electric vehicle of cement making'

jgamman··on Wind-to-hydrogen production reaches deep water
currently use a lot of rare metals like platinum. inc vol of fuel cells will drive up price of fairly inelastic supply of rare metals. or require step change in anode/cathode catalysts to cheaper metals
jgamman··on Microbiologist Investigates After Her Beef Soup Turned Blue in the Fridge
silica dessicant. chemists use it in their dessicators to keep things dry - pink is dry, blue is 'full' (i think, it's been 25 years...). i think it's a low level cobalt doping and as the silica matrix swells with water absorption it changes the UV absorption and the colour changes. or something like that.
jgamman··on Porsche, Ferrari e-fuel push at heart of EU engine debate
you want to turn coal into gasoline? i think most people consider use of FT fuels as an approx. neutral carbon emissions assuming clean energy source. >>The process involves the hydroliquefication of brown coal, also known as lignite, into crude oil.
jgamman··on Kids can't use computers and this is why it should worry you (2013)
made me smile: 95% of 5% == 5% of 95% - so no change in absolute numbers right?
jgamman··on Ask HN: What's the best lecture series you've seen?
MIT's Herbert Gross Calculus - done with a chalkboard and a camera. classic.

jgamman··on Where Lawns Are Outlawed (and Dug Up, and Carted Away)
I don't see the problem - food gardens are banned in NZ: https://thespinoff.co.nz/media/18-06-2016/new-zealands-absur...
jgamman··on At SXSW, a Pathetic Tech Future Struggles to Be Born
ha! nz's fluf mentioned. reviewed here:https://thespinoff.co.nz/irl/16-02-2022/inside-the-exclusive...
jgamman··on U.S. posts $119B budget surplus in January; first in over 2 years
i read your comment as 'conflate our way out' and thought hhmmm sounds about right
jgamman··on It's Time to Get Rid of the IT Department
perhaps "IT dept" still conflates infrastructure with application. if you are entirely cloud with a SLA for support, then "application" just means allowing depts to develop the tech they need to solve problems -> as the articles says 'any picture you like, but only using this canvas/paint/brush stack'. i've got a lot of sympathy for this view.
jgamman··on Will it rot my students' brains if they use Mathematica? (2002)
Full disclosure: The second author started a new math- ematics software system in 2005 called SAGE
jgamman··on Will it rot my students' brains if they use Mathematica? (2002)

jgamman··on Doing a Job – The Management Philosophy of Adm. Hyman G. Rickover
I am not against business education. A knowledge of accounting, finance, business law, and the like can be of value in a business environment. What I do believe is harmful is the impression often created by those who teach management that one will be able to manage any job by applying certain management techniques together with some simple academic rules of how to manage people and situations. ©1982 H.G. Rickover
jgamman··on New Zealand struggles with plague of peacocks
"there are hardly any" would understate the problem. today i achieved the (almost) impossible and i've just finished breakfast.
jgamman··on Cement is the source of 8% of the world's CO2 emissions (2018)
the crystals that form and bind the aggregate together are a hydrolysis reaction (water using). Water is the main reactant not CO2.
jgamman··on 'It's hard to find maintainers': Linus Torvalds ponders Linux's future
'It's hard to find maintainers' (that will work for free)
jgamman··on I made my own PCBs with a 3D printer
Note to chemists: PCB is a printed circuit board not a polychlorinated biphenyl. i know i came for the wonder of atomic scale printers but still, printing circuits is cool too.
jgamman··on The greatest migration: the history and mystery of Polynesian navigation (2019)
"your earlier book, “Come On Shore and We Will Kill and Eat You All” "

yeah, nah.

jgamman··on The Pacific Ocean is so acidic that it's dissolving Dungeness crabs' shells
"As for the acidifying ocean, NOAA proposes two methods of attack: Reducing our overall carbon footprint to reduce the carbon dioxide absorbed by the sea, or teach wildlife and the people who rely on it to adapt to how the sea will change."

jgamman··on Bye Bye Microsoft Office, Hello LibreOffice
i think 'onboard' might refer to the wider context of using a tool in say, a research group. it's not just you learning the tool, it's about how the group uses the tool and the historical developments in place.
jgamman··on Measuring actual learning versus feeling of learning
I know you're using "money shot" as slang for "key take-away" or tl:dr but it's origin is intertwined with porn - you might want to re-consider keeping it as a goto phrase online and in the real.
