jfk13··on Book Depository will be closing on 26 April 2023
Abebooks, at least, was bought by Amazon some years ago.
jfk13··on Ryuichi Sakamoto has died
> we'd be talking about some other crisis than the "climate crisis."

I doubt that. Perhaps it'd be slightly less acute, that's all.

jfk13··on The average American has the same life expectancy as the worst part of England
Sorry to hear you've had such a negative experience with GPs. That's not at all been my experience. Interactions with our local GP surgeries - both in our former home town and where we live now, and in recent months also with my elderly father's GP as he has needed increasing levels of care - have been excellent.

These generalisations are generally unhelpful!

jfk13··on ChatGPT – The Revolutionary Bullshit Parrot
> So just like human brain then.

Do you have evidence to substantiate that claim, or are we supposed to just take it on faith?

jfk13··on Italian privacy regulator bans ChatGPT
> If they read it – they may remember it and retell it later or use it in their works

And if their remembering-and-retelling constitutes a "derivative work" (or, perhaps, a "public performance"), they may be in trouble, despite the original work being openly published.

jfk13··on Google denies training Bard on ChatGPT chats from ShareGPT
If content with a "human-generated" flag is rated more highly in some way -- e.g. search results -- then of course spammers will automatically add that flag to their AI-generated garbage. How do you propose to prevent them?
jfk13··on Senate Bill to Ban TikTok
> I’ve had cops plant evidence in my car, I’ve been hit by trucks running red lights, I’ve gotten in a knife fight with a hobo, I’ve been shot at on the highway, I’ve been fired for no reason, I’ve gotten in a motorcycle accident that fucked me over seven ways to Sunday.

While I think I can understand many of your feelings about US culture, I'm a bit lost here. I was married to a US citizen and have lived a significant amount of time there, although never settled permanently. But I never experienced any of these things, nor felt an overwhelming need to worry about them. Is it something about your chosen lifestyle?

(For context, I have also lived and worked in a place where many of my neighbours employed armed guards to sit at their gates. And I watched from my office window as an armed bank robbery took place across the way. It ended with corpses lying in the street. And I was far more worried when dealing with police there than in any of my several US interactions with them. Think the US is bad? Well, in some ways it is... but it could be a lot worse.)

jfk13··on We need a new economics of water as a common good
I wasn't thinking so much about the quantity as the anarchic crowds that'd be competing for access to it (and churning up mud, etc...) if it no longer comes through the pipes. I'm not so sure things would be "fine".
jfk13··on We need a new economics of water as a common good
I wonder how things would go if the whole population of your state suddenly needed to dip all their water out of the rivers and lakes?
jfk13··on Gordon Moore has died
> A generation before that people watched "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946) for much the same reason.

Some of us still watch it!

Of course the vast majority of old movies are long forgotten (and no great loss), just as the vast majority of what we're producing today will be. But there are a minority of classics that endure. Just as there's still a market for Shakespeare, Dickens, and Mozart, despite all the plays, books and music that have been written since.

jfk13··on Show HN: Modern Font Stacks – New system font stack CSS for modern OSs
You may happen to like how system-ui looks on your system (macOS? Windows?); but do you have any idea what it looks like for the person reading your resume, perhaps on Linux with a custom theme, or on an Android device where the vendor chose to ship some brand-specific UI font? Or on a 5-yr old version of the OS, or on the version that'll be current 5 years in the future?

IMO system-ui is hardly ever a wise choice for content.

jfk13··on Emptying the dishwasher with systems theory
I prefer a dishwasher with a shallow cutlery drawer at the top, rather than a basket. It's trivial to slot the cutlery into the tray in groups, where it washes perfectly and comes out tidy.
jfk13··on The Evolution of Motorola Phones
But could you swipe entire multi-syllable words in a single fluid gesture, and have it recognise what you meant? Sure, if I were pressing keys one by one, that tactile feedback would be great. But that's hardly ever how I "type" on my phone.
jfk13··on ASCII Double-Murder (2022)
It's ASCII: 0x4C = 'L', 0x4F = 'O', 0x4C = 'L'.

jfk13··on Show HN: ChatGPT-powered dystopia simulator
Indeed; see https://github.com/baobabKoodaa/future/blob/master/prompt-in...
jfk13··on Canada bans TikTok on government devices over security risks

jfk13··on World Building with GPT
From a brief glance, it looks quite clichéd and repetitive. (But that's hardly surprising, given the absence of a creative mind behind it.)
jfk13··on Lawsuits Block Thousands of Seattle Homes, $39M for Affordable Housing
Do you have evidence to support that accusation, or are you just cynically slinging mud?
jfk13··on Help! Is This Arabic?
It's unlikely (I'd guess) that a site would want to offer the exact same page in both horizontal and vertical modes, yes. But it's plausible they might want to share a lot of design elements between horizontal and vertical versions of the content.

Using logical properties would make it easier to have a common base of CSS that controls spacing, sizes, etc., that can be used by both language versions, rather than maintaining them completely separately.

jfk13··on Help! Is This Arabic?
The site of the Office of the President of Mongolia is available in top-to-bottom traditional Mongolian script: https://president.mn/mng/

Other examples (e.g. vertical Japanese) aren't too hard to find: https://nishinokensetsukogyo.co.jp https://ok-maru.jp etc.

jfk13··on Met Office says Northern Lights will be visible in England tonight and tomorrow
Hah, reminds me of when my university account was going to be closed down (this would've been in the early 80s), and I had some files I wanted to preserve. So one evening, I sent them to the card punch, and then lugged the resulting boxes home on my bicycle.

(At this point, I've no idea what eventually became of those boxes, though...)

jfk13··on Unicode 15.0 Slide Show
But only for Latin/Greek/Cyrillic scripts; it makes no claim to be a pan-Unicode font (family).
jfk13··on Unicode 15.0 Slide Show
Browsers will generally do "fallback" to some other font, if the font(s) named in the CSS don't support the characters present in the text. But for some of the rarer characters, you may not have any available font that supports them.
jfk13··on Show HN: Sail a historical full-rigged ship in real global weather
Thanks for taking the time to add an encouraging comment.
jfk13··on Drag an emoji family with a string size of 11 into an input with maxlength=10
The "length" of a string in extended grapheme clusters is not stable across Unicode versions, which seems like a recipe for confusion.

The length in code units is unambiguous and constant across versions.

jfk13··on Show HN: Sail a historical full-rigged ship in real global weather
I remember reading Robert Manry's Tinkerbelle[1] as a child, and ever since have had something of a fascination with the idea of sailing solo; although at my now-fairly-advanced age I accept that I'm going to keep my ambitions severely in check.

jfk13··on Daily.place
Seems like this should have been posted as "Show HN"?
jfk13··on Drag an emoji family with a string size of 11 into an input with maxlength=10
It's not that clear-cut. If you enter that 11-code-unit emoji into a field that has maxLength=10, and the browser lets you do so, but the backend system that receives the data only stores 10 code units, you're worse off -- because you probably won't realise your data got corrupted -- than if the browser had prevented you entering/submitting it.
jfk13··on Florida lawyer argues pregnant inmate’s fetus is being illegally detained
Maybe. That's not how it reads to me: "I have a daughter ... and I get to live ... And [implied I] might try ..."

But if I misinterpreted the comment, I apologize.
