jff··on Go: Ten years and climbing
How frustrating is it to change GOPATH? In each GOPATH, create a file called "source" or something, and put the following in it:

  export GOPATH=/home/ubercow/project2/
Or even:

  export GOPATH=`pwd`
When it's time to work on your project just say

  . source
This seems like an INCREDIBLY minor step to take. It's certainly no worse than using pyenv.
jff··on Go: Ten years and climbing
Don't forget Java, Pascal, Ada, Lisp, Algol, Basic, Ruby, Awk...

By this metric, the best programming languages are Perl and Fortran.

jff··on Go: Ten years and climbing
I took a seminar class in Go in my final year of school, in the spring of 2010. I was hooked pretty early. It was a very chaotic time to be writing Go; the language would change from week to week, so if we did a pull from the Go repo, there was no guarantee last week's assignment would still compile! At the time, the canonical way to compile code was by makefile:

  include $(GOROOT)/src/Make.$(GOARCH)

  TARG=bin/command
  GOFILES=main.go

  include $(GOROOT)/src/Make.cmd
The thing I miss most is the netchan. I understand the reasons they got rid of it (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/golang-nuts/Er3Tetnt...) but when it worked, it was fantastic.

I would think you'd still be better off just staying in the house, especially if you can use your garage as a decontamination zone / airlock to avoid bringing a bunch of alpha emitters into the house.

Edit: assuming you're talking about fallout protection rather than the initial gamma burst. For that, yeah, get as many feet of earth between you and the source as possible; a trench will do that even without a vehicle over top.

jff··on The New Preschool Is Crushing Kids (2016)
If we want to adopt the Chinese and Indian methods of academic success, we should start teaching 4 year olds how to plagiarize--your average Chinese 7th grader is copying work at a level surpassing even a 12th grade American child!
jff··on A village where little girls turn into boys aged twelve (2015)
He's referring to 'bacha bazi', which as you point out is a cultural construct.
jff··on What, exactly, do philosophers do?
You forgot to include "Endlessly write justifications of how important philosophy is" and "Misunderstand the abstracts of scientific papers, then write essays based on those misunderstandings"
jff··on Xanadu
Yes, in interviews etc. he's struct me as an "ideas guy" who got stuck on the same idea for 30 years. You'd think in that time he could have just coded the damn thing.
jff··on A Social Network That Costs 10¢ to Post
I'm curious, what are the tax implications of this? You're spending money, you're receiving money--does it tell you at the end of the year how much you've taken in vs how much you spent, so you can report it as taxable income? I acknowledge that the average person would probably end up with a negative balance at year-end, but someone who wrote popular posts could end up making hundreds of dollars due to upvotes and comments, right?

> I think we are better off with boost

Whoa, let's not say things we can't take back ;)

jff··on What are a sane set of key bindings between i3wm, tmux, and vim?
It's not what you're asking, but I've always had similar problems with tiling window managers. They want to use a lot of keybindings, typically keyed on Alt as the modifier; the problem is that lots of programs such as Emacs and Firefox also want to use Alt bindings.

Eventually I settled on stumpwm because the default bindings didn't interfere. In the same way Emacs commands often start with a C-x followed by some other key (e.g. C-x C-c to quit), stumpwm prefixes every command with C-t. So to split a pane, you do C-t s, then C-t n to jump to the next pane, C-t k to kill the window in the current pane, etc. The only thing it conflicts with is opening a new tab in a browser, and you can accomplish that by hitting 'C-t t' which quickly becomes second nature.

The other alternative is to use a mouse-oriented WM like fvwm or rio, but that's easy and doesn't involve memorizing dozens of key bindings ;)

Making Money is worth reading, still.
jff··on Does disabling Wi-Fi prevent my Android phone from sending Wi-Fi frames? [pdf]
Not tangential, they call this out in section 2.1 of the paper. I'd paste it but the formatting does not copy/paste well.
jff··on Terry Pratchett's unfinished novels destroyed by steamroller
Agreed; 'Raising Steam' made me so sad I couldn't finish it (I thought it was a much better story when titled 'Making Money', and even better when it was called 'Going Postal').
jff··on The Lost Pleasure of Reading Aloud
Personally, I'm just fine at impromptu public speaking, or giving a presentation, or just talking intensely for an hour or more, but 5 minutes of reading aloud gives me a dry mouth and tired jaw. Like you, I can't wait to be done. It's probably a practice thing; we'll see how I do when I have kids.
jff··on Japan Wakes to a Text Message: Missile Approaching
So you're saying all Japan needs to do is station high-powered lasers near all North Korean missile sites? Seems easy enough.
jff··on Germany, in a First, Shuts Down Left-Wing Extremist Website
From TFA: "And in January 2016, the Interior Ministry ordered a ban on a right-wing website, “Altermedia Deutschland.”"

That is of course one instance, but if this is the first time a left-wing website has been shut down by the German government, it looks like it's no worse than 1:1!

jff··on Metformin Promises to Extend Life for a Nickel a Pill
> For eight hours from midday until evening (the exact times shift a little based on my waking and sleeping schedule; 2PM to 10PM is a pretty common schedule for me), I eat like a responsible adult. Minimal junk food, desserts in moderation, try to make my meals balanced, don't eat too much sugar or simple carbs. I don't deny myself anything I crave, generally speaking, but I try not to eat garbage.

So if you shift your example schedule two hours back to 12PM-8PM, isn't that just saying "I don't eat breakfast any more"? Lunch at noon, dinner at 6, a snack in between meals, and dessert at 7:30 would fit all the criteria you laid out, and indeed is something I end up doing pretty frequently, just without a faddish name like "intermittent fasting".

jff··on Spacex Launch Webcast: Formosat-5 Mission
Every time I've watched a landing, the video feed is janky. One might speculate that they don't want to live-stream an embarrassing failure but that seems a bit odd when it would be more embarrassing to have an explosion during launch, losing the payload.

Edit: vvvv that sounds quite reasonable, you'd think they'd do something like throw a buoy 100m away to house the actual satellite link and just do wifi from the barge to the buoy.

jff··on The Electric-Bike Conundrum
I swear there's a pervasive feeling among bicycle and mass transit advocates that if the experience is too convenient, it's not morally right. A bicycle is morally right because it takes effort and gets you to work a bit slower than a car. An e-bike is morally wrong because you don't have to work as hard and you get to work just as fast; you're not sacrificing anything by not taking a car, you're not a hero. Similar reasons behind buses/trains vs. ideas of self-driving electric municipal cars.

> find it outrageous I have to pay various fees to use/access my money while it is used to enrich others.

Where are you banking? My bank pays me interest, even on my checking account, and I don't need to worry about a burglar taking all my savings. There's no reason you can't keep your money at the bank, stop using credit cards, and pay everything in cash; all the bank will know is that you withdraw $200 every week.

jff··on Uber Gets Run Over by Its Own Subprime Auto Leases
That's the end goal of the "We finance everyone!" car dealers, right? Get you in a high interest rate loan and either the client eventually pays it off (paying $15,000 for a car worth $4,000) or they default after 6 months and you take the car back and sell it again.
jff··on Disney acquires own streaming facilities, will pull Netflix content
I'm glad to see someone bring up Star Trek and CBS's streaming service. They seem to think the new Trek series will save CBS All Access; I would contend that CBS All Access will kill their Trek series. I've heard from people who tried it, they said the stream quality is terrible from both an audio and video perspective. If you're going to bet on your own streaming platform, you really shouldn't cheap out on the tech.
jff··on Big Companies and the Military Are Paying Novelists to Write Sci-Fi for Them
Seems like it would put you in a position to publish a, say, quarterly collection of the results. Combine that with a Patreon or something similar if other people enjoy the stories that come from the prompts, and you might break even while still getting the stories you like :) Seems like most short story publishers run in a deficit so if you're accepting that from the start you're in a better position than most.
jff··on On managing outrage in Silicon Valley
I'd be frightened too if I was writing an article on Techcrunch that could potentially be seen as supporting the memo too much, since as we've seen that's the sort of thing that gets people fired once Twitter finds out about it.
jff··on SF residents get a shock: Someone bought their street
You're thinking of security guards, not bodyguards. yellowapple was pointing out that she has armed bodyguards near her when she's out and about, yet she advocates for disarming the regular folk like us--"one law for me, another for thee"

> I read that Feinstein owned a home there. They should set up a website taking donations: every dollar donated would increase Feinstein's annual parking costs by a dollar.

I'd donate to that, as long as the money went to the ACLU and/or the EFF. She's also a notorious gun-grabber despite having been one of the few people in the city of San Francisco to have a concealed carry permit (I don't remember if she still has it or not)
