jerrre··on Anthropic’s $5B, 4-year plan to take on OpenAI
I don't think the grain market is growing as fast as the AI market
jerrre··on What it’s like to fall into the deadly Australian plant, gympie-gympie
When I have an encounter with a potentially deadly animal, I don't care about the absolute number of deaths its species have created. I care about the percentage for 1 encounter.
jerrre··on Brainstorm questions not ideas
If there are 10x people, that means the norm is 1x people, so there is still a lot of interest in making those productive.
jerrre··on The Diversity of Arabic Scripts
What is the relation between the square font and Reem Kufi?
jerrre··on Cyclists now outnumber motorists in City of London
Don't most of you points also apply to drunk walking?
jerrre··on Show HN: Can you beat my dad at Scrabble?
Interesting observation about the split of subjects

One similarity is: both don't take too long to create. The AI it self might, but the thought about it don't

jerrre··on Meta rediscovers the cubicle
Agreed, it's not something a scientific paper would give any useful insight for.

A survey of company success (measured in profits, or market cap) vs office layout, trying to see if there is correlation would be more useful. Even accounting for the fact that there is a lot of cargo culting, and unhappy employees.

jerrre··on Professor writes history essays with ChatGPT and has students correct them
He can still curate right?
jerrre··on Why do modern pop songs have so many credited writers?
Don't forget that that can also be a backported success story
jerrre··on Why do modern pop songs have so many credited writers?
The problem is how to to decide whether the change was trivial, or the change was the thing that made a 100x difference in success.
jerrre··on The art of the shadow: How painters have gotten it wrong for centuries
Yeah look at the guy making the udders, below the udders in the shadow are skinny cow legs, and then the bulk of the shadow is on the floow.
jerrre··on Why big tech companies need so many people
wouldn't 1 or 2 be more efficient in this formula? assuming efficiency per employee
jerrre··on Tell HN: Microsoft classifies own emails as junk
Isn't that just because it's an unfathomably huge company with a very broad range of products
jerrre··on Ask HN: What API's do people wanna buy/pay for?
> Besides by doing market research, how can one find out what are API's that people are actually looking for and willing to pay for?

Does asking professionals directly what they're missing count as market research?

Does this post count as market research?

jerrre··on Macroeconomic changes have made it impossible for me to want to pay you
> Would they get it if the other top engineers and I all downed tools or walked out as a group? No

Why not try that? Or use it as leverage? If you believe this.

jerrre··on Ask HN: Anyone doing some absurd stuff after getting laid off?
You can work together with other organizations (but that quickly becomes a sliding scale towards megacorparations)
jerrre··on What free, ad-supported Uber rides might look like
Maybe the next step can be: get paid to ride an Uber while blasted with ads! /s
jerrre··on Ask HN: What is the cheapest, easiest way to host a cronjob in 2022?
> more reliable than your VM that falls over when it's full of logs (at some indeterminate future date)

If this is an issue, I think all other solutions have similar risks: account banned, company acquired/closed down, forced update to new API/system, to a point that I think I'd take the bet on a VM living longer in most cases

jerrre··on Automation enables founders to grow companies with fewer and fewer employees
Paying a wage = sharing your profits, just not on a % base, but a fixed amount. But in the end it's still: less profits for the founder, and more profit for the employee.
jerrre··on Mastering Stratego
This is mostly done at the river where you've ended heads-up even when starting the hand with 6-10 players
jerrre··on The Mystery of the Blue Whale Songs
What would be the baseline data? Don't we need some ground truth examples?
jerrre··on Ask HN: What are 100K dollar ideas but not million dollar ideas?
Checkout the JUCE framework, it makes a lot of stuff easier
jerrre··on How can you not be romantic about programming? (2020)
I see it as: it's the "bullshit" that creates the value for others.

Basketball, or programming for your own pleasure is just that: pleasure. of course you'd do it for free if it's something you enjoy.

But the fact that it has to generate value for others is what removes the fun. You will have to make changes to your priorities, take into account others' preferences, etc etc.

Luckily if done right generates enough money to compensate for that.

jerrre··on Show HN: A color picker for named web colors
I don't see any red in this either
jerrre··on The only way of being anonymous in Sweden is illegal?
Do you mean when she wasn't home? Or is it customary to lock you're home even when you're home now?
jerrre··on Finding the Joy in Feeling Tired
The book "How to Be Idle" by Tom Hodgkinson is an interesting read that has a similar viewpoint
jerrre··on Outdated vs. Complete: In defense of apps that don’t need updates
You misunderstood. Otherwise the whole article wouldn't make sense, she clearly states that it still works fine on new devices.

Compiling with the newest versions of the libraries/tools can be a lot of hassle including downloading/instaling multiple GB's

The newest OSes will run apps made with earlier versions of the libraries/tools fine, up to a point of course.

jerrre··on Board Games and Markov Chains
Also such games are a kind of automatic "story" generators. You're in a non-linear, non-predictable race, that will automatically create exciting emotinal moments, where one is ahead, but dropping back, or someone's overtaking finally etc etc.
jerrre··on Ask HN: Companies of one, how do you ensure business continuity?
Keep in mind that that does not actually solve the issue of continuity:

- What if the employee quits

- What if you're unavailable as before, and the employee gets stuck

- What about the plethora of tasks you cannot expect the employee to do

All the while adding complexity of hiring and managing someone

jerrre··on So You Want to Compete with Steam (2018)
That seems clearly out of control for Steam, would be the same if you bought that game anywhere else.
