jeremyarussell··on Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos
It would seem that the key difference is in the first example Instagram has to be involved in the nightclub venture. Which is all fine and dandy for an Instagram themed nightclub or nightclub event. Now however, and this is the kicker, Instagram can let as many nightclubs as they want use the photos without Instagram having to be involved or even disclose their involvement with anyone.

TLDR - Before: Instagram had to have clear collaboration.(which would limit how many people they could sale your photos to.) After: Instagram does not have to show clear collaboration.

jeremyarussell··on EFF: Stop Congress from Reauthorizing the Warrantless Spying Bill
I find myself agreeing with you, this guy is too much. (Also did you notice how he think's we are all liberals?)
jeremyarussell··on Prof. calls out student for cheating via Math StackExchange
My point wasn't about the quality of ethics, but that it's being left to schools and not the, you know, parents.

--I suppose since I used the word properly I invited an argument of quality. I did mainly mean to refer to to the who and not the how well though.

jeremyarussell··on Prof. calls out student for cheating via Math StackExchange
In the past ethics 101 was taught by parents, somewhere along the way they became incapable of raising kids properly. Anyone with proper work ethic will understand that this kid was asking for someone to walk him through or do his question. Not get an idea fleshed out.

I would think it's still a parents job to guide a kid properly in the realm of ethics, maybe we should place more responsibility of the children onto the parents. (mind you this I'm not touching the fact that they really can't prove the kid is who he is, I'm just referring to the ethics aspect.)

Not sure if you noticed this on their website. Covers a bit of what has been discussed already but I figured while we are talking about the insurance implications involved we should include the answer 23andme already gives the public.

jeremyarussell··on Staffer axed by Republican group over retracted copyright reform memo
In my eyes I saw it as less about the cause of copyright reform, and much more about the message of "We republicans are going to stop catering to the rich guys with lobbying power." Which would have had lasting and view/brand changing consequences. Take something with seemingly little effect and get a major reaction. Whether that was anyone's goals or if the memo should have been taken at face value is of course debatable. I just wanted to give a plausible bigger picture they could have been grabbing at. (mind you the republicans should have learned this last election that limitless money doesn't instantly bring you results, you need content as well.)
jeremyarussell··on Tesla Was Cash Flow Positive Last Week, CEO Musk Says
This is one of the reason why patents are actually good, https://www.google.com/search?tbo=p&tbm=pts&hl=en... takes you to a list of stuff like this http://www.google.com/patents/US8286743 which happens to be my personal favorite, since it's this battery placement that gives Tesla cars an edge. (handling, acceleration and all that good stuff.)

It's one of the examples of patents being done right, to protect innovation.

jeremyarussell··on Lego Finds Discontinued Set For Boy Who Saved Up For 2 Years
I can't believe I forgot about that with LEGO's. I find puzzles are good for that too. I think I'll have to buy myself some kits.
jeremyarussell··on Apple - Think Twice
The funniest part is who would have even known someone was using another logo with an apple, in Germany. If not for Apple itself making a bid deal about it.
jeremyarussell··on Skrillex Quest
To you: The downvoters are personally annoyed that after reading two lines of what you wrote they couldn't deal with your opinion.

Out of curiosity, isn't going to a page where you already know from the start you aren't going to have anything nice to say a bit, trollish? :)

jeremyarussell··on Buy Nothing Day
Which is why I argue for it. Humans do have the ability to override their natural way of thinking, until that day is no longer true I guess I'll keep arguing for the case of moderation.
jeremyarussell··on Buy Nothing Day
Is it just me that's sick and tired of all these extreme all or nothing causes? It's either no patents or leave it the same, it's either capitalism is all bad or all good, it's either we are saving the planet or burning it as we go.

You know we can just change certain laws in the patent system to get it fixed right?

You understand that the idea of someone being able to sale their hard work for a living isn't evil right?

Or that maybe just making a true concerted effort of a smaller carbon footprint is enough? We don't need to ban all gas lines, or coal and replace it all with solar wind farms.

Consider this, we are fighting other people's ideals with equally extreme ideals and then wonder why the world doesn't see our brilliance. They think all of torrenting technology is evil because it allows for easier "unauthorized" access of someone else's creative content. It's a tool people. Capitalism isn't bad, overly greedy people are bad, and they just happen to love capitalism.

It's called moderation.

jeremyarussell··on Glitch Is Closing
They list the reasons why they won't do that in the FAQ at the bottom. That said I think they are greatly underestimating their fans.
jeremyarussell··on First Teleportation From One Macroscopic Object to Another
I need to catch up on my quantum physics, every time I read that someone pulled off quantum teleportation I'm disappointed when I read the line "here we realize quantum teleportation between two remote atomic-ensemble quantum memory nodes, each composed of 100 million rubidium atoms and connected by a 150-meter optical fiber" taken from the source article. http://arxiv.org/abs/1211.2892

I know there's a difference between what they did and regular fiber optics. It just doesn't seem to be quite the same. Can it be done without the interconnecting material? If not it's really useless. When I picture practical uses of quantum teleportation I picture things like rovers instantly sending data and receiving instructions.

jeremyarussell··on Windows 8 is just another way for Microsoft to show you ads
Same here, I didn't notice until checking the sports app. I was like wtf, until I realized it was in the app not the OS itself, on an app that makes sense (sports products in the sports app oh nooo) and it was the last thing in the list of big ol' tiles. VLC doesn't have apps, OS functions don't, Office didn't, just the store apps.

Now if they ever do move into my other programs or into the core OS itself i'll have an issue, they aren't really that bad as it stands. (watch video before opening third party programs for instance.) I highly doubt they'll go there though.

jeremyarussell··on Windows 8 is just another way for Microsoft to show you ads
That actually was what I was talking about, cool I'll grab that for when windows fails (and the magicISO features themselves.) Thanks
jeremyarussell··on Windows 8 is just another way for Microsoft to show you ads
I have to say, as much as I didn't want to have to say it. Microsoft outdid themselves with windows 8. I just bought a new Asus laptop and I didn't notice when I ordered that it said windows 8 (which is really really not like me) and when I got it I almost installed seven right over it. Instead I gave it a fair shot and damn it if it turns out I like it. The interface changes flow real nice for me. The apps it comes with are good (the store is lacking bad but time should help that issue) and the one program I couldn't install was for mounting an .iso (which is a huge deal for me) and turns out you can right click (or double click) and it mounts it and proceeds into the root of the image, so that won it bonus points. Obviously I've had it less the twenty four hours, but it's already growing on me.

I really did think it was going to be a vista fiasco all over again, I can say I'm dropped by how well Microsoft managed to release an I-didn't-find-a-bug-within-minutes(hours even) new operating system. Which gets me even more because it's such a deviation from prior version of windows.

jeremyarussell··on 2013 Automobile of the Year: Tesla Model S
So yes was the answer.

PS: Err it looked like ALL the editors of the magazine had only good things to say about the car. I digress though seeing as to how it's a popularity contest in any case.

jeremyarussell··on 2013 Automobile of the Year: Tesla Model S
Err, exactly what makes those awards more real? Just how many people would concede the point?
jeremyarussell··on What’s New in Evernote 5

jeremyarussell··on Facebook’s Wonky Privacy Controls Now Outing LGBT Youth Without Their Consent

jeremyarussell··on World of Warcraft hobby sparks US political row
Blizzard should make her a skin, and also a super PAC. That would be so great.
jeremyarussell··on An Update from Elon Musk
If that's your proof for Tesla ruining the oil economy then your standing on thin evidence, as bandy said. The only people getting unlimited free charging are the people that just bought the new model S, AND they have to get to one of the stations. Also personally I could care less if the oil business's crash after Tesla becomes even cheaper and widespread. People may think global warming may or may not exist, but as I ride a bike to work, and breath all the car fumes that pass by, and get light headed just from that, well I'm not too worried about not having more gas burning cars around.
jeremyarussell··on An Update from Elon Musk
Getting a similar feeling from Apple employees as Tesla employees doesn't mean Apple employees are really changing the world, it just means that the Apple employees genuinely believe that they are.
jeremyarussell··on This is Not ok
+ for recognizing that. Consider this though, what causes first, the asocial stigma? And what causes our society to keep girls from asocial activities?

An argument could be made for a broader more general form of misogyny.

jeremyarussell··on This is Not ok
I think you missed the point on that by a bit. See the point was men don't generally become nurses as often as women, because of the social stigma that it's a woman's job.

The way I figure there is no biological reason why a girl wouldn't want to expand her mental capacities via technology and programming. It's strictly because it's seen as a nerdy guy stuck in basement thing, then the brogrammers came out and people realized it's also a guy-that-views-women-as-objects field. Yeah, those brogrammers really helped the cause.

Went off on a bit of a tangent there. Sorry.

jeremyarussell··on Go Daddy patents “announcing a domain name registration on a social website”
There's still a huge valid question about reform as opposed to scrap. The system would work if it was actually applied correctly. (I understand application is part of said system, but I'm referring to the overall human aspect, ie, the reason AskPatents.com was made.)
jeremyarussell··on Go Daddy patents “announcing a domain name registration on a social website”
From my understanding the director of the patent office David Kappos, was the one that asked the people at stack exchange to make this site. I suppose they indeed haven't given any further details of how they will interact, but I don't see him taking this initiative without intending to bring to the attention of his office the patent questions which receive the highest votes. (seeing that is how stack exchange works anyways.)
jeremyarussell··on Show HN: Virtual tabletop gaming
I'm sending my buddy the link to your site, I'm pretty sure me and some old friends from school are about to spend too much time playing games... And I had been so productive these last few weeks.
jeremyarussell··on Boosted Boards (YC S12) Unveils Its Magical Electric Skateboard
When a pebble hits underneath my skateboard the reason the skateboard stops and I continue is because ME moving was why the skateboard was moving. In the case of a powered wheel I'll hit the pebble and keep going and keep going, sense the wheel itself is still turning.

I repeat, the wheel is turning, not being turned by inertia and friction.

As for the breaking, I can train myself to lean back when I hit the break, and lean forward when I hit the accelerator. It's not that hard.

PS: I would hope to Jebus that someone would be wearing a helmet and other protective gear with this.
