jellyksong··on Show HN: Tweetspiration – let Twitter brainstorm ideas for you
Thanks for telling me, I'll change that as soon as I can. And I seem to violate the "Actions" and "Branding" requirements as well...
jellyksong··on Show HN: Tweetspiration – let Twitter brainstorm ideas for you
Should be fixed!
jellyksong··on Show HN: Tweetspiration – let Twitter brainstorm ideas for you
Ah nice catch! Should be fixed now :)
jellyksong··on Crushed Dreams and College Decisions
Server is down, full text:

As the arrival of decision letters starts to taper off, most of my friends have a good idea of where they're going next year. Some were lucky enough to have gotten into their dream schools, others were accepted by a slew of equally amazing colleges (though perhaps not their first choice), and a few were rejected to all but a handful of great schools. We should all 'be happy', our friends, family, and counselors tell us; the hardest part of senior year is over and now remains the best months of high school. But 'great' is a very subjective word and some people are inevitably disappointed. I'm not discounting any of the students who got into their top choices: I believe that they're all deserve it 100%, but I'm sad that my top choices don't feel the same about me.

Yes, I did get into a couple of great schools, and I am truly honored and grateful to be accepted by them. But at the same time, I am utterly heartbroken that after years of pushing myself to excel academically and pouring my heart into the application essays, the response is still: 'Dear [x], I am very sorry to let you know that we are unable to offer you admission to [x]'. And I feel so, so guilty for feeling like this, as if I'm jilting my accepted schools and betraying my friends who try to cheer me up.

There's also regret. Maybe I should've written about different topics, maybe I should've applied to more schools, maybe I should've gotten more/other recommendations. And while it's very appealing to just blame the system for my failures (ahem College Confidential), I know that it's really no one's fault but my own. So there's an unhealthy amount of anger, bitterness, and disappointment directed at myself right now. Summed together, all of this is strangely numbing and emotionally exhausting.

But there is always some hope, even if we do have to trudge through this unpleasantness. It's quite honestly pointless to continue feeling this bad. Rejection and failure is a part of life, and even though my lifelong dreams were crushed over the course of two days, I have to accept that and find new ones. I know that I will eventually be happy and successful at a school that accepts me, despite all the inevitable sad laughter in the coming days.

Now I just need to believe that.

jellyksong··on Pi Day
Slightly tangential, but MIT decisions come out today at 6:28 (2 pi!), and last year's results were at 3/14 1:59.
jellyksong··on Maxis Insider: SimCity Servers Not Necessary
Anyone notice the interesting old-school-text-adventure error page? It wasn't 404 but some other 4xx page (forgot which) -- it seems to be resolved and gone now though.
jellyksong··on Ask PG: Comments are not working?
It's because HN is on https but the css file isn't. If you're on chrome you can click the shield icon to manually load it (not sure about other browsers).
jellyksong··on Jonathan James
I'm not sure we should glorify Jonathan James or even compare him to Aaron Swartz. His "hacking" of the DoD was undeniably illegal, and his sentencing seemed appropriate for his actions. We will never know if he was innocent or not of the TJX case. It's tragic that he killed himself, but, at least to me, his actions seemed on the whole more malicious than Swartz's ever was.
jellyksong··on Lessons Learned from Going "Profitable" in Under an Hour
This strangely parallels the exact experience my friend and I had making a website for the families in Newtown [1]. Especially the part about being ignored on HN ;)

The author kind of discounts the power of "the press" though. From our experience, if there's even one good article out there about your cause, other reporters will contact you about it, and you'll get the word out much faster.

jellyksong··on Polynomial time factoring algorithm using Bayesian arithmetic
The abstract states, "When applied to NP-complete algorithms, this leads to the fundamental conclusion that P = NP".

Isn't this a much more important conclusion?

jellyksong··on Ask HN: High school senior, deferred from Harvard. Advice?
I believe that ~100 deferred applicants were accepted last year, out of the deferred pool of 3,000 and the regular pool of 30,000.

Hm, what are some misconceptions then? What do you think they are looking for?

jellyksong··on Ask HN: High school senior, deferred from Harvard. Advice?
Thanks for the insightful comment! I don't really mind the structure of school, and I think college will be even less "rigid" in terms what what I learn or do.
jellyksong··on Ask HN: High school senior, deferred from Harvard. Advice?
Kinda bursting my own bubble here but it's also extremely unlikely to be accepted after being deferred -- even less than applying regular. I'd have to do something extraordinary between now and April.

Also, at this point I think it's too late to edit my essays. Are you applying as well?

jellyksong··on Ask HN: High school senior, deferred from Harvard. Advice?
Did you make an account to say this? Thank you :)
jellyksong··on Canadian scientists create a functioning, virtual brain
Can anyone explain in simplistic terms how this program works?
jellyksong··on 16 bits per second - the bandwidth of consciousness (2007)
I'm curious. How do they quantify the amount of sensory information our brain receives vs. the amount that we consciously perceive?
jellyksong··on Minecraft augmented reality app announced for iOS
The actual iOS app seems pretty buggy at the moment. Many of the ratings are exceedingly negative.

jellyksong··on The economic logic behind tech and talent acquisitions
what is the "price-to-revenue ratio"?
jellyksong··on Monkeying with Bayes’ theorem
I'm confused. So should that part of Bayes' Theorem be raised to the 1.5 power?
