jdechko··on I Have a Confession: I Built This Site with AI – Please Forgive Me
“I've learned a lot about using a tool like this but the biggest result is that development has lost its joy. There were no challenges, there were no puzzles, no hurdles to overcome. The biggest lesson is that software development is now about the destination not the journey, the journey is for the agent. If that's the case then the joy now has to be thinking about what is possible. I have built features into this site that I never would have on my own.”

I really appreciate these words. I am not a professional developer, and my code to this point has been limited to VBA and writing excel formulas (if that’s even coding).

I’ve recently started work on a full-blown Mac App. I’ve had the idea for years, but never the expertise. It’s not something I’d ever pay someone for either, mainly because it would be expensive and I don’t know if there’s a market for it. But I got a Pro subscription, fired up Xcode and got to work. Within minutes I had a proof of concept. Less than a month later, and I’ve got what I consider to be a nearly finished app with more features than I’d ever considered.

In the interim, I’ve also vibe-coded up two quick single-page web tools to my (and my wife’s) specifications. Things that I could describe, but would have taken me so much time to learn and build that I just wouldn’t have bothered.

jdechko··on Chewing gum restores dad's taste and smell years after Covid
As far as I know, anosmia would be the inability to smell. Parosmia would be scents smelling like other things, or the inability to identify certain smells.

And since taste and smell are so closely related, I haven’t been able to drink colas for about 3 years. Dr Pepper is fine though, so I’m okay.

jdechko··on Everett shuts down Flock camera network after judge rules footage public record
How long until the AI estimates how fast you were going based on the time you were tagged at 2 cameras? The system says travel between these cameras should take 3 minutes. You made it in 2:45. No review, just a ticket in the mail.
jdechko··on How Markdown took over the world
If you’re on a Mac, I recommend qlmarkdown. It’s a customizable quick look renderer for markdown (md) files.

jdechko··on Heart rate variability differs between smartwatch and clinical testing
Exactly my experience. After my last couple races or long workouts, my HRV dipped a few ms for a few days before coming back to normal. In this case, it’s not telling me anything I don’t already know. But in other instances, a lower HRV would make me consider slowing down a bit.
jdechko··on Cardio fitness is a strong, consistent predictor of morbidity and mortality
I’ve heard about 75-85/25-15, but just round it to 80/20.

Zone 3/Tempo sessions can help to raise speed so that Z2 is faster for the same intensity.

Obviously lower intensity workouts can go for longer and the high z5 stuff for fairly short intervals across short sessions.

jdechko··on Cardio fitness is a strong, consistent predictor of morbidity and mortality
Careful there. By combining running and cycling, you’re 2/3 of the way to triathlons. And why suck at 1 sport when you can suck at 3?
jdechko··on "It never gets easier, you just go faster." (2020)
I mean, he was a professional athlete, so that’s kind of the point he was making. As you progress in fitness, it sucks less which means your body has adapted and you can go faster/ harder/ longer.

jdechko··on Playstation is erasing seasons of Discovery shows from customer libraries
Not that it’s perfect, far from it, but Movies Anywhere is a baby step in the right direction for at least Movies (on some services).

jdechko··on Adapting WozMon for the breadboard 6502 [video]
I have a limited background in computing hardware, but I really appreciate the thought he puts into explaining both the why and how.

His 8-bit CPU videos are just amazing, and even at ~1 Hz, it’s incredible to think about what all happens. And then to think about going billions of times faster…

jdechko··on The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Decompilation
And the “include_link.mk” file. Yea, that’s probably a good thing.
jdechko··on Rivian software update bricks infotainment system, fix not obvious
As a non-developer, the whole situation with a bad software update to the Voyager spacecraft really puts things into perspective as far as how bad remote updates can be.

It’s also a testament to the way that the system was designed that they were able to get it back online.

jdechko··on First planned small nuclear reactor plant in the US has been canceled
Not exactly. I work as a project manager in the transportation field, and I can tell you that inflation has doubled (or more) the cost of several of my projects in the past few years. Most of the increases can be attributed to rising costs, and not necessarily scope changes.

Combined with limited funding, the projects continue to get delayed.

jdechko··on Apple jacks prices to juice profits because $19.3B a quarter isn't enough
It certainly caused me to rethink my spending. I signed up for Apple One Premium as soon as it was available. With the latest hikes, I’ve ditched the bundle and now I just have Music and iCloud storage.

So in their quest for increased revenue, I’m now spending less than I was before.

Also dropped Prime and Netflix (though basic is included for no additional cost with T-Mo).

jdechko··on New pill helps Covid smell and taste loss fade quickly
I’ve had this for the past 6 months. I’d honestly rather have entirely lost my sense of smell than to go through this.

Just surprised Alec took that one apart and didn’t have a separate one already disassembled.

I’m only about halfway through, but like most of his videos this one is fascinating

jdechko··on Retailers appear to be facing a self-checkout reckoning
Sam’s club has the app checkout, which I prefer to waiting in line at Sam’s. Just scan everything as you go using your own phone. Tap pay and bypass the line (or at least the checkout line).
jdechko··on When does an old iPhone become unsafe to use?
Yeah. I came here to post this. It’s funny that the article lists the XR as compatible when the XS and XR were released at the same time (A12 bionic SoC).
jdechko··on Pythagorean Theorem found on clay tablet 1k years older than Pythagoras (2009)
All math is derivative anyway.
jdechko··on How BlackBerry failed to respond to the iPhone
True. Also the consumer tradeoff of being able to do way more with your phone for the slight inconvenience of having to charge your phone everyday.

And with the advances in technology, most people can get slightly more than a day which means the phone gets charged overnight. And that’s not really an inconvenience at all.

jdechko··on Emotional support alligator denied entry to Phillies game
The animal in question being an alligator, I’d assume the owner and pet would split up and see each other later.

However, if the animal in question had been a crocodile, I assume they would have split and met back up after a while.

jdechko··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
If this were about the younger generations being unable to afford housing, the sentiment would be to stop ordering avocado toast and going to Starbucks all the time. Obviously the problem is much bigger and complex, and maybe something will finally be done to fix this for everyone.
jdechko··on Texas death row inmate at mercy of supreme court, and junk science
I’m sure the dozens of TV shows don’t help this either. Law and Order is never wrong and their science and methods are flawless. Obviously I’m being sarcastic, but I think it clouds the jury’s thought process
jdechko··on How unions won a 30% raise for every fast food worker in California
It’s the worst of all possible outcomes. Minimum wage stagnated and employees demanded better pay. Covid hit and forced fast food restaurants to adjust operations. Prices increased due to “inflation”, but really it’s just massive corporate profits. Front-of-house employees have been replaced by kiosks and self-service.

For the first time in many years, I had Steak N Shake. Had to order from a kiosk, get my own drink, and pick up my own food (it had previously been a full-service restaurant). That by itself wasn’t a big deal, but the kiosk had the nerve to ask for a tip! We didn’t all the work, so no thanks.

So the 30% raise is for fewer workers, and the costs (and work) will be passed on to the customers.
