This is really nicely written and packed with very useful advice
Love the Greg Lemond's citation!
The quote is great, but I feel like in CS it does get easier with time, unless one is switching project/specialty and even then, with more maturity, one has learned to learn, and mastering other parts of the stack (or other stacks entirely) makes it faster to build analogies and spot differences.
I feel like it gets easier and slower. Obviously not at first, but a decade or two in? Once you start knowing all of those things you didn't know, you realize just how much consideration is required for every decision.
If I notice that it's getting easier with time, I take that as a sign that I'm not doing challenging enough work.
> It never gets easier, you just go faster.
It's why I never stuck with exercise. It sucks and keeps sucking no matter how long you are doing it.
I mean, he was a professional athlete, so that’s kind of the point he was making. As you progress in fitness, it sucks less which means your body has adapted and you can go faster/ harder/ longer.
Yeah. But on the other hand, if you watch someone slowly decline in health because they did absolutely nothing to take care of their body, and then die more ignobly and miserably than they had to, solely because of that, it's a hell of a motivator to do another set of push-ups even when you don't particularly want to.
Strongly disagree. I used to have this opinion until I got genuinely very fit. Exercise is fun when you’re actually fit, in my experience. I never got the “runners high” until I was able to really push myself to (relatively) high levels of performance. YMMV
