jcroll··on Ten years after the Higgs, physicists face the nightmare of finding nothing else
This nytimes article has a very different take. The field is excited at the prospect of new physics: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/13/science/cern-hadron-colli...
jcroll··on Keycloak: Open-Source Identity and Access Management
Spring has an oauth2 authorization server that is currently in early release: https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-authorization-serv...

I'm building something with it currently and it's quite nice, especially if you are already familiar with spring security. Documentation is quite sparse tho.

jcroll··on Summary of Atomic Habits
There's a service I tried once called blinkist.com where they have a large library of books that they condense by summarizing them into a smaller package. As well, most books also come as audiobooks. I used it but found it was hard to come away feeling you had absorbed much from the books when they had been shortened the way they were. But yes, definitely other people feel the same way you do.
jcroll··on Better.com CEO fires 900 employees on Zoom call
Is there a link to this?
jcroll··on How I got wealthy without working too hard
> Work and self-actualisation can be rewarding and meaningful, but looking at the sea from an hammock and drinking too much beer with friends three times a week is also a completely respectable way of waiting for the gravitational swallowing of the planet.

Part of wants to accept this from the author and the other part of me is wary. I didn't have a child because I wanted to be happy, I did it because I wanted a more meaningful life. It was the greatest decision I ever made.

jcroll··on There is currently no way to drive between Vancouver and the rest of Canada

jcroll··on Ask HN: for senior positions is it advisable to list side projects on your CV?
I like your answer I just wonder: I used this project to teach myself kubernetes. If someone asks me how I know kubernetes what do I say? I suppose I say it was on a side project I did
jcroll··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?

jcroll··on Which Cities Have the Highest Risk of a Housing Bubble?
A condo? Houses are still insane
jcroll··on Which Cities Have the Highest Risk of a Housing Bubble?
What can we learn from that bubble to help us tell whether this one is close to bursting?
jcroll··on Climate Disruption Is Now Locked In. The Next Moves Will Be Crucial
Judging by covid I wonder if climate change will have to begin to affect every state, not just the coastal ones, before the U.S. has the political capital to take true action.
jcroll··on Facebook's employees reckon with the social network they've built
My argument is you can't have it both ways. You want to collect $500k salaries you're going to have to live with your employer pursuing immense profits
jcroll··on Facebook's employees reckon with the social network they've built
Facebook makes decisions on a profit basis and by that metric is meteorically successful. These Facebook employees that spent years collecting their $500k pay cheques might want to consider this before posting their videos criticizing the company's direction
jcroll··on Ask HN: What did you make during lockdown?
https://www.hopupon.com

HopUpon is a Cheap Multi-City Flight Generator that allows you to explore new cities as you "hop" along to your destination. Our algorithm creates itineraries that are often cheaper than a direct flight.

jcroll··on Variolation
It was also done in the HBO John Adams miniseries
jcroll··on Trump threatens to 'close' down social media platforms
Democratic elections are supposed to be the failsafe for that no?
jcroll··on Joe Rogan Is the New Mainstream Media
This is true but I think getting less so as Joe is getting more confident in opining his ideas, look no further than his latest takes on the covid response
jcroll··on A Google Cloud support engineer solves a tough DNS case

jcroll··on Facebook to Buy Giphy for $400M

jcroll··on You Probably Should Be Wearing a Face Mask If You Can
Link for making a mask is broken. Anyone have a good link how to make your own?
jcroll··on RFC: Let's Disrupt Dating Apps
I feel like that was the original point of having to login through Facebook to access Tinder, you could see whether your matches had shared friends. The idea being this was a potential indicator you might be a good match or not
jcroll··on The Internet of Beefs
> Don't go looking for beefs.

You can't even post a question on StackOverflow without creating a beef (e.g. "Why would you want to do that?")

jcroll··on Two Years of Vanlife: A Retrospective
Agreed, it's terribly cynical
jcroll··on The plot thickens for a hypothetical “X17” particle
Good breakdown of why this is probably just noise https://www.forbes.com/sites/startswithabang/2019/11/26/this...
jcroll··on Isolation, anxiety, and depression in the remote workplace
I don't really see why people keep trying to "defend" remote working looking for optimizations in a practice which is fundamentally broken. At what point in our evolutionary history do you think the human animal, which evolved as a pack hunter in a highly socialized environment, was designed to work from home 40 hrs a week? We should be focusing on creating more flexible office environments for our workers where they can come in and work with their coworkers regularly
