jcpst··on Before you try to do something, make sure you can do nothing
This is probably good advice, generally speaking. But I know there are exceptions to this. What I figured out very quickly is that most people end up needing to take this approach due to the problems you described.

I've been programming professionally for 10 years. And even in my early years, I could code all day without running and normally it works as I expected or if an error occurs it's quick to fix.

Sorry if that sounds like bragging, but I'm sure there are others out there that are like this- just saying it's not an absolute truth, but I believe it to be generally true.

jcpst··on ‘World of Warcraft’ players trick AI-scraping website into publishing nonsense
There are people I know where I try to remember how we met, and it’d be because of some obscure corner of the gamefaqs forum.
jcpst··on Voder Speech Synthesizer
I have wanted to try one of these- the playable soft-synth is great
jcpst··on LazyVim
Intellij IDEs for my day job are awesome.

I do have a personal all-products license as well, but I hesitate to go “all in” and be dependent on them.

But it is ok to just use a lot of editors for different things. VS Code is ‘good enough’ a lot times. I like writing notes in emacs org-mode. NeoVim on the command line. Sometimes I use Helix, I think it hits a sweet spot between snappiness and minimal configuration.

jcpst··on Brian Eno albums available in Dolby Atmos and Spatial
I have an idea. Let’s describe binaural recording, but then not mention it by name. Let’s also say that all of the specialists and engineers that designed atmos didn’t really create anything different and weren’t aware they could just make binaural recordings.

Here’s something that’s a big deal- when you mix a stereo recording, you can pan the audio tracks left or right. When you work with something like atmos or a surround system, you have control of where that sounds sits in a spacial field, which then gets played through those cans on the left and right side of the head. It’s different.

jcpst··on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)
I have not directly bought a computer in 13 years. I’ve been a programmer for 10.

My daughter uses the one I was issued at coding bootcamp in 2013. My home recording studio uses a 2010 mac mini. My wife uses an out-of-warranty one from my work, as do I for my home dev machine. My son uses a really old cheap laptop that was laying around.

I installed SSDs and maxed out the RAM on all of them.

Maybe people are attracted to the latest shiny thing, or give up early on a computer that would go to scrap without a little TLC.

Isolation is a big one. The classic study people bring up is the “cocaine rat”.

The rat in isolation was drawn to the bottle with cocaine water. When the rat was in a cage with activites and other rats, lost the preference for the cocaine water.

jcpst··on Why I Hate Frameworks (2005)
Yes. My “worst” code was when I was mid-level. Too clever, showing off what I learned.

Music was my first career, and there was something that really stuck with me while studying music theory- learn as much as you can, and then don’t think about any of it when you go to compose.

jcpst··on Threads has passed 2M sign ups in the first 2 hours
It doesn’t require an app to check it out. I clicked on the HN link and was able to navigate through the web app.
jcpst··on Ask HN: What boosted your confidence as a new programmer?
For me it was working in a company that had a process.

My first job as a programmer I was tasked with building a replacement for an existing system. I worked by myself, and was just told to ask if I had any questions. I reported progress once a week by giving a percentage complete- for the whole project. That’s it.

The next job I was supposed to be a consultant. But I was so clueless- I didn’t know what I didn’t know. Eventually I was canned.

Finally The got somewhere that had a defined agile process- I started getting work done and was even able to mentor some people. Then I flourished and now I’m pretty comfortable with where I’m at.

If it’s not going right, the position might not be a good fit.

jcpst··on Type system updates: moving from research into development
Sorry, can’t agree on that one. I like to play with elixir in my spare time, love the language. There is a ton of great tooling. But I use C# and Rider at work, and the IDE experience is light-years better.
jcpst··on I made a command-line tool to assist me with writing polyrhythmic drum parts
I was having fun writing one liners with poly, leaving my file explorer open and dragging the output file straight into a Ableton channel with a drum rack set up.

I also tried making a web UI with it via Yew. I got it all compiling and running in the browser, but the crate is all about that CLI. I would have to write a lot of the code that’s in the CLI file to call the create_smf function.

It might be worth considering designing the library’s API to be a bit friendlier to an end user. I think there’s cool stuff that could be done with it. Or at least that’s something I want to do :D

jcpst··on I made a command-line tool to assist me with writing polyrhythmic drum parts
I like to think of western music notation as not the most intuitive choice for a lot of popular styles of music. But it's kind of like when people talk about X programming language "making hard things possible".

It's like math notation. There is a canon of work over a very long period of time that can be used as a foundation for expressing many different intricate ideas in a compact way. And in the 20th century tons of non-traditional notation styles have been thrown into the western mix.

jcpst··on I made a command-line tool to assist me with writing polyrhythmic drum parts
Very excited to see this. It's very much a tool I would use, excited to give it a spin after work tonight. I also look forward to reading the code.

Other cool music tools I've seen implemented in rust:

* glicol - https://glicol.org/

* tune - https://github.com/Woyten/tune

A while back I wanted to make some tools to aid in composition and was using rust. Very partially baked, but a fun pet project to learn the language with. Generates just intonation pitch lattices based on my research of Ben Johnston's compositional approach. https://github.com/jcpst/johnston

Fair- I shouldn’t have said that about google maps. I’m not a google maps user, so not as familiar with what features are available.
jcpst··on How platform engineering works
It’s hard. I’ve been on one of these kind of teams for a few years now.

We have probably 50-70 teams and well over 2000 deployable products.

There are good things, for sure. But of five teams, we’re the only one of them that is focused on the ‘customer’ (application developers).

The devops/infra teams provide ways for AppDevs to build what they need, but there seems to be no good abstractions being made.

Our team is named and presented as a team that provides common libraries, templates, ‘golden paths’, etc. But then the reality is we have barely any time for that. Instead we get tasked with projects that are indeed important from a $$$$ perspective, but it doesn’t fit well into an existing capability team.

Which is fine, but it feels dishonest to the rest of the engineers that are using our products thinking that’s the main thing we do.

The kind of places I like to vacation commonly have no cell service. The built in GPS works pretty good without cell service. Google/Apple maps fail in this scenario.

> We've had a pipeline churning out devs for many years now. The ones that are great at leetcode and playing the game go to FAANG, the ones that aren't go to startups.

What about companies with a technology department that aren’t FAANG or a startup? Isn’t that where most devs go?

This has been my experience. I’ve been using arch for ten years.

The deepest I’ve had to go is search the forum if I couldn’t figure out something from the wiki.

The wiki is so good that it’s common to come across it and find your answer for your linux question even if you are using a distro other than arch.

jcpst··on Google doesn’t want employees working remotely anymore
An office isn’t that alien to anyone who has been to school. It’s essentially a training ground for working in an office.
jcpst··on Google doesn’t want employees working remotely anymore
Wow, this is really great information. It makes a lot of sense. Masks make it more likely to breathe in aerosols and vaccines make it more likely to get infected. You should share these findings with the scientific community. We need more studies like yours.

Not the same thing though. Windows Terminal is a terminal emulator. Rsh is a shell. Assuming rsh runs fine on windows, one could make another profile in Windows Terminal that starts in rsh.
