I started contracting software development in 2002. Mainly I develop embedded systems code (in C) and simulation systems (in C++). I've been coding for the Folding@home project since 2007 and have been working on an Open-Source 3 axis CNC simulator called CAMotics since 2011.

I had one of these as a kid. It was awesome!! I believe it was my first exposure to programing. I even have a picture of me with it. Plaid shirts and programming. Not much has changed in ~40 years.

jcoffland··on Rise of Candida auris embodies a serious and growing public health threat
Hardly, our population is still growing at an exorbitant rate.
jcoffland··on All of Toyota’s electric vehicle patents are now royalty-free
How is it worse than if Tesla was aggressively perusing their patents? It's the patent system itself that you have a problem with. Tesla's patent sharing scheme only makes things potentially better for other inventors.

Right, because if we hide the information then bad people won't have access to it. One of the first uses of the public Internet was to distribute text files with bomb recipes. That and porn. Cat pictures came later.

That's what I think when I hear people say, "save the planet." The planet will be fine. It's humans that need saving.

>> Waiting 4 months for a minimal response from a vendor with such a large percentage of the market is unacceptable.

> Umm... expecting any kind of response from a vendor with such a large percentage of the market is... kinda arrogant.

Are you suggesting we all bow obsequiously to the great corporation?

jcoffland··on Rogue Airbnb listings still exist where short-term rentals aren't allowed
I've had Airbnb simply ghost my negative review. It shows up on my account but not on the rental page. I called Airbnb for an explanation they said it could take some time for the review to show up. It never did.
jcoffland··on Give Me Back My Monolith
This topic reminds me of Conway's law:

Organizations which design systems ... are constrained to produce designs which are copies of the communication structures of these organizations.

— M. Conway

Microservices probably make sense for large companies which are essentially a lot of small actors who build up a big system. Medium and small organizations should probably stay away.

Or another way to think about it, choose a microservices architecture if you want to employ a lot of devs.

Since airlines have an oligopoly, fares are not based on the cost to the airline but on the price on the supply and demand curve that yields maximum profit. In other words, the maximum price that enough people are willing to pay. If there were more competition in the market the price would be closer to the airline's actual cost.
jcoffland··on Winding down my Debian involvement
I've been using Debian for over 10 years and I still love it as a user. But as a developer, I find it extremely frustrating. I've several times attempted to figure out how to package my open-source projects [1] [2] for Debian but the process is a nightmare. As I understand it, I first have to find someone with appropriate privileges to mentor me. I should be able to just submit a potential package for review.

Then there is a ton of documentation on creating packages but which 300 page guide is the right one to use is unclear. And which set of packaging tools should I use? In the end, the time investment required to get started has kept me from contributing.

jcoffland··on The Foursquare of today is a location data giant
This hypertrending feature is very similar to how Google Maps tracks traffic. Everyone using Google Maps is constantly uploading position information which makes it possible for Google to infer traffic jams, among other things.

Of course, Google has a more plausible argument that it's users have opted in even if very few realize their anonymized and aggregated position information is being broadcast to the world.

jcoffland··on Galaxy Simulations Offer a New Solution to the Fermi Paradox
Why software? Seems like a pretty dumb and fragile platform for a quasi-immortal being.
jcoffland··on Galaxy Simulations Offer a New Solution to the Fermi Paradox
But unlike time travel or flux capacitors aliens do have a real life counter part, us. We know life exists, it's not a stretch to imagine there is more of it.

The way I read it, the author was perfectly aware of this interpretation.

jcoffland··on China’s Plan to Build the World’s Biggest Supergrid
Bay Area power is hardly cheap. In the highest tier I'm paying $0.50/kWh base rate is about $0.20/kWh. The US average is $0.12/kWh. So I don't think the problem is PG&E offering electricity that is too cheap.
jcoffland··on China’s Plan to Build the World’s Biggest Supergrid
I must say, as an American reading this, I've got a bit of infrastructure envy. In the mid 20th century, the US was building out massive infrastructure. Now it seems we are no longer capable of such projects. It may be an oversimplification but I think the focus on running every organization like a corporation has led to an inability to handle projects that extend beyond the fiscal year effectively. Instead our largest infrastructure projects are collapsing before completion due to cascading delays, political turmoil and failed private contracts.

jcoffland··on Why can’t a bot tick the 'I'm not a robot' box?
I think a lot of people come to exactly that conclusion.
jcoffland··on Why can’t a bot tick the 'I'm not a robot' box?
A small percentage of bad actors using automaton can produce a lot of traffic. So although it may be true that a large portion of the requests coming from TOR exit nodes is malicious, it would be unwise to conclude that most users of TOR have bad intentions.
jcoffland··on Rules for Choosing Nonfiction Books
Currently I use FBReader TTS on Android. I'm not sure what the wpm is. I should test it with a stopwatch.
jcoffland··on Spotify will now suspend or terminate accounts it finds are using ad blockers
It's not that it's impossible to deliver ads without referring to a thirds party site's code. It's that advertisers don't trust content sites to just tell them how many views they got.
jcoffland··on Rules for Choosing Nonfiction Books
A trick I use to "read" books much faster is to feed them through Google's TTS but set a much higher than normal read speed. I call it robotting a book.

It takes some getting used to and requires more focus but it's very efficient in terms of information dump. I've been able to increase the speed over time. My wife thinks I'm crazy. I use headphones.

jcoffland··on Rules for Choosing Nonfiction Books
Like the article's #3, I have my own silly rule, but it's a good one.

No books with the author's name written in a larger font than the title.

This eliminates books who's main merit is the author's fame. It's especially good at filtering out crappy New York Times best sellers and it works for fiction too.

jcoffland··on MyBrandNewLogo – A 3-step Logo Generator
I used 99designs a few years back to get my company's logo. It was cheap, fast and good. You get to choose from several designs submitted by real designers and work with them to fine tune it. I am still very happy with the results.

This service has pretty generic results, IMO.
