jcater··on “The Problem Child of Seasonal Flu”: Beware This Winter’s Virus
Not the OP, but my whole family also caught this flu (type A) during Christmas week, followed by bronchitis. We've had coughs for going on 3-4 weeks.

I take 2,000 IUs of extra Vitamin D a day and we all got the flu shot in September. From what I've read, this year's flu shot is largely ineffective.

This is a brutal flu. If you catch it, stay home and get rest.

jcater··on Ask HN: What's an important problem that more people should work on?
Expanding on that from the opposite direction, what new industries can be created that can employee the previous workers disrupted by new technology? He who figures that out will never be for want.

(This isn't an argument against the parent comment at all, as I agree with them too. Their comment just got me thinking.)

jcater··on Parents Who Pay to Be Watched
> How is TV better than an iPad? I mean, seriously? At least with an iPad there's a plethora of different apps, and a good percentage of them will be more enlightening than watching the ever diminishing quality of TV these days.

Kids are all.. different? What he describes was surprisingly the same for my 6 year old. Tablets cause focus and aggression issues with him. Taking away tablet access has done wonders for our household.

Your mileage may vary.

jcater··on Ask HN: What job did you leave IT for?
Could you expand on the "school" part? This sounds fascinating. Are you training other would-be farmers on organic methods?
jcater··on Blinded after applying contact lenses with wet hands
I also have only one functioning eye, and can attest to this. Going to a 3D movie is horrible, especially when you pay so much more for the ticket.

About the only other negative I've hit is I realized in my 30s that I can't seem to put a baseball hat on straight.

jcater··on Programmers are most likely to work from home
I work from home and love it, but a large part of that, as you theorize, is the lack of commute.

If I lived within walking distance of a job I'd otherwise enjoy, I'd strongly consider it.

jcater··on The strange effects of thinking healthy food is costlier
I think this is the bigger issue.

I'd agree that buying healthy options at the grocery store does not have to be more expensive than junk food (or even cheaper), but that's assuming you can plan ahead well enough to not throw away the fresh food once it spoils. Granted, that's a matter of habit, but a hard habit to overcome if you're not used to it. I rarely shop in the middle of the grocery store, except for staples, but I still manage to throw a bit away a week later.

jcater··on Theranos Whistleblower Shook the Company and His Family
"Director Adam McKay, fresh off his Oscar for The Big Short, has even signed on to make a movie based on Holmes, tentatively titled Bad Blood. (On the bright side for Holmes, Jennifer Lawrence is attached as the lead.)" [1]

jcater··on Turning Instagram into a Radically Unfiltered Travel Guide
The captions mention "Photo Illustration by ..." with a credit to the source photography, so this actually looks intentional.

It's very jarring and distracting.

jcater··on Paint drip people, a successor to T-shaped people
Somewhat related: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Getting_to_Philosoph...

"Clicking on the first lowercase link in the main text of a Wikipedia article, and then repeating the process for subsequent articles, usually eventually gets one to the Philosophy article. As of May 26, 2011, 94.52% of all articles in Wikipedia lead eventually to the article Philosophy."

jcater··on A new Curl logo
In the article:

"I also suggested we’d try to work with :// (colon slash slash) somehow as a symbol, since after all the :// letter sequence is commonly used in all the URL formats that curl supports. And it is sort of a global symbol for URLs when you start to think about it. Made sense to me."

They seem to grok it perfectly well, but recognize the modern association people have with :// and urls.

In what country? Certainly not the US for FDIC insured accounts. My bank went under in 2009 and I never lost access to money.
jcater··on Justice Has a Waiting List in New Orleans
"That means public defenders can only guarantee their salary if enough of their clients are convicted of crimes. Acquittals are bad for business. Other states impose such fees, but only Louisiana requires its public defenders to feed off their clients' guilty pleas to survive."

jcater··on Avoiding Last Place: Some Things We Don't Outgrow (2011)
That brings up a question I've been asking myself a lot lately. While I fully support transgendered rights, how did it become that transgendered became lumped in with LGB? For the latter, we're talking (in general) love and sexuality.

But transgendered brings on a whole new component that doesn't seem to have much in common with the latter.

jcater··on My experiences of working remote for a year
I've also been working from home for 3 years and love it.

My 3 year old understands perfectly well that "daddy's at work... we can't disturb him."

Oddly enough, it was the teenagers at home during the summer that had a hard time grasping that.

jcater··on Same-Sex Marriage Is a Right, Supreme Court Rules
My old church refused to marry anyone who was previously divorced. Clergy have a lot of leeway in who they can refuse. No one is forcing them to do anything.
jcater··on A Hard MIT Class
At a minimum, not die in the water. But I'd love to get to the point of doing laps.
jcater··on A Hard MIT Class
As someone with a similar story (an older kid thought they'd teach me how to swim without my consent and dropped me in the deep end of a pool -- I don't remember being brought up), does anyone know of adult-focused swimming programs to get around those fears?

I've taken lessons as an adult, either at the YMCA or as part of a college Continuing Education program, but they never seem to click.

I feel like I've conquered anything else life has thrown at me, but I'll be damned if I've learned to do something as simple as swim.

jcater··on Ask HN: What are you doing to improve your health?
The flip side of that for me, as a long-term (25+ yr) insomniac, is exercise is the only thing that has ever gotten my sleep issues under control.

So, yeah, I think it's not smart to deprive yourself of sleep and still exercise. But if you're cursed with sleep issues, consider getting started on an exercise routine even with little sleep.

You may find out in a few weeks time that the sleep issues go away.

jcater··on SaaS companies can grow faster by asking customers to prepay
How does this affect renewals? If I'm on autopilot with monthly credit card charges, I don't think much about a service from month to month.

But if, in the 11th month, I have to think about a renewal and its cash outlay, you are forcing me to think about the value of your service, and what your competitors have come up with in the last year.

jcater··on A guide for programming in style
What exactly are we looking at here? Someone's personal guide on getting their systems setup for development? An intro by a company for its new employees? Some new general manifesto a group thinks should apply to everyone?

Some context would be nice.
